Cats that don’t shed or shed very little can be perfect for people with allergies or those who don’t like the idea of cat hair clinging to their furniture and clothes. Although cats that rarely shed still produce the protein some people are allergic to, they may be easier to live with than a cat that sheds often. Below, we’ll discuss 18 remarkable breeds that don’t shed.

The 18 Cat Breeds That Shed the Least

1. Bengal

Origin: Southeast Asia and the United States
Lifespan: 12–16 years
Weight: 8–15 pounds
Height: 13–16 inches

Bengal cats have a distinctive, stunning coat with leopard-like spots and marbling, making them look more leopard than cat. These medium-haired cats don’t have an undercoat and don’t require much grooming, and unlike other cats, Bengals groom themselves less frequently.

This is even better news for allergy sufferers; as proteins that trigger allergies are found in saliva as well as dander, this lack of grooming means fewer ways for your cat to trigger your allergies.

Bengal cats are known for being athletic, loving, and curious cats. They might not be the cuddliest feline, but they are exceptionally loyal and will sleep next to you until it’s time to get up and play again. They love kids and are also great company for a dog that likes cats.

2. Bombay

Origin: Thailand and the United States
Lifespan: 12–18 years
Weight: 8–15 pounds
Height: 9–13 inches

Some Bombay cats have been known to live as long as 20 years, so taking on this cat is a huge commitment. They look like mini-panthers and shed very little compared to other breeds, but they aren’t considered hypoallergenic. They only need an occasional brushing to keep their fur healthy and shiny.

The Bombay cat is known for being easy-going, friendly, and inquisitive. They do well with busy families, and their temperament has been compared to that of a dog more than a cat.

3. Burmese

Origin: Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand
Lifespan: 16–18 years
Weight: 8–12 pounds
Height: 9–13 inches

The Burmese are small cats with fine, short hair that sheds minimally so they won’t stir up as much dander as other cats. As a result, they are considered hypoallergenic. They are affectionate and love spending time with their owners without being overwhelmingly demanding.

Burmese are known for being laid back with a kitten-like curiosity that they never grow out of. They enjoy the odd game of fetch too, which is a plus since the stocky cats are prone to putting on weight, so the more you can get them moving, the better.

4. Cornish Rex

Origin: Cornwall, England
Lifespan: 15–20 years
Weight: 5–10 pounds
Height: 8–12 inches

The Cornish Rex has short, curly hair that grows close to their body and is considered hypoallergenic. Their fur is incredibly fragile, and brushing it can cause it to break. Generally, just running their hair through your fingers will be enough to detangle it.

These cats are energetic and can become destructive if left alone for long enough to become bored. They enjoy playtime and cuddling up in your lap afterward, and they’re a fantastic pet for children.

5. Devon Rex

Origin: Devon, England
Lifespan: 9–15 years
Weight: 5–10 pounds
Height: 10–12 inches

The Devon Rex are very similar to their Cornish Rex cousins. They also have short, curly hair that grows close to their bodies. They have large, bat-like ears with a small, pixyish face and are known to be affectionate and needy; if you are out of the house for long periods, this is not the cat for you.

While they should also be the perfect choice if you have an allergy, they aren’t hypoallergenic. The little fur they shed will end up on you since they’re so friendly. So, if you are particularly sensitive, picking another breed might be a better idea.

6. Exotic Shorthair

Origin: United States
Lifespan: 8–15 years
Weight: 8–15 years
Height: 10–12 inches

You probably assume the Exotic Shorthair wouldn’t be a great choice if you want to avoid cat hair in your home. But, despite their thick coat, they rarely shed. You will need to comb them occasionally, but you won’t catch many hairs. However, they aren’t considered hypoallergenic; it’s best to select a different breed if your allergies are severe.

They are known for being affectionate and are a relaxed, calm breed. They are also incredibly adaptable, making them perfect for owners of smaller homes or apartments.

7. Javanese

Origin: United States, Canada, Southeast Asia
Lifespan: 8–12 years
Weight: 5–10 pounds
Height: 9–12 inches

The Javanese has a long coat that requires constant grooming to ensure it doesn’t mat. This makes them a little more high-maintenance than some of the other breeds, but it is worth it as they are also considered hypoallergenic. They are intelligent, playful, and love being around their families.

Javanese cats are known for being athletic and excellent jumpers, so if you can’t find them, look up because they’re probably sitting on a shelf watching you. They are quite demanding, so if you’re looking for an independent cat, the Javanese isn’t for you.

8. Korat

Origin:  Thailand
Lifespan: 10–15 years
Weight: 6–10 pounds
Height: 10–12 inches

The Korat is such an old breed that while they originated in Thailand, they had a different name then and were called Siam cats. The earliest known record of them can be traced back to 1350 A.D. They’re known for their green eyes and light blue coat with silver tips. Korats are not considered to be hypoallergenic, but they are low-shedding cats, which means they are easier to manage. Their single-coat fur grows close to their body, and you’ll need to brush them a few times a week.

These beautiful cats are intelligent and can be taught tricks; keeping their mind busy is a must because boredom results in mischievousness and unwanted behaviors. They love being the center of attention and don’t get along with other pets unless the other pet is another Korat.

9. Lykoi

Origin: United States
Lifespan: 12–15 years
Weight: 8–13 pounds
Height: 8–10 inches

Lykoi can be completely hairless or with a coat, but even those with coats don’t shed continuously. Instead, a few times a year, they molt. They aren’t considered to be hypoallergenic. However, they are much easier to manage than cats with fuller coats.

This cat is known for being outgoing and sociable. They get along well with children, other cats, and dogs that like cats. They love playtime and will play even if they don’t have anyone to play with. The Lykoi must be kept indoors, as they’re prone to sunburn and can easily scrape their skin.

10. Minskin

Origin: United States
Lifespan: 12–15 years
Weight: 6–9 pounds
Height: 5–7 inches

This hypoallergenic breed is a cross between the Sphynx and Munchkin breeds. They have a sparse coat with soft, dense fur generally on their ears, nose, face, tails, and legs. Minskins shed very little, and their fur comes in different patterns and colors.

They are short in stature but are still athletic and can keep up with taller cats. They’re known for being friendly, affectionate, and playful and love being around humans and other animals.

11. Ocicat

Origin: United States
Lifespan: 15–18 years
Weight: 6–14 pounds
Height: 9–11 inches

The Ocicat sheds minimally; they have a tight coat and are considered low maintenance compared to other breeds. While they aren’t considered hypoallergenic, they are easier to manage if your allergies aren’t severe. A weekly brushing using a rubber brush will be enough to keep on top of your Ocicat’s coat. This cat is athletic, chatty, and demanding and does best in active households.

12. Oriental Shorthair

Origin: England
Lifespan: 12–15 years
Weight: 8–12 pounds
Height: 9–11 inches

The Oriental Shorthair is a great option if you suffer from allergies since they are hypoallergenic. They are elegant and sleek-looking and are low maintenance in terms of grooming. They also come in over 300 colors and patterns.

These cats are playful and intelligent. They’re known for being curious and energetic and love being the center of attention. Orientals are sensitive cats that don’t enjoy being left alone. So, if you aren’t home often, the Oriental Shorthair is probably not the cat for you.

13. Peterbald

Origin: Russia
Lifespan: 12–15 years
Weight: 7–14 pounds
Height: 8–12 inches

Peterbalds can have coats ranging from peach fuzz to velvety, but regardless of the coat type, they are minimal shedders. While they aren’t considered hypoallergenic, they are still an option if you think you can manage your allergies around them.

These cats are lively, vocal, affectionate, and friendly. They also bond deeply with their owner and love nothing more than following you around the house or curling up next to you on the couch. They will also greet you at the door when you come home after a long day at work!

14. Russian Blue

Origin: Russia
Lifespan: 15–20 years
Weight: 7–15 pounds
Height: 9–11 inches

The Russian Blue shed over a two to three-week period, which means, overall, you won’t have to worry about their shedding. It can be a nightmare during the shedding period, and fur will be everywhere. However, they are hypoallergenic, so your allergies should be easier to manage with this breed than others.

Russian Blues are muscular but still manage to look graceful. They are affectionate and love being around their families. They tend to retreat around strangers, hyper children, or rowdy dogs.

15. Siberian

Origin: Russia
Lifespan: 10–18 years
Weight: 15–20 pounds
Height: 10–12 inches

Siberian cats have plenty of fur, but they don’t shed much; plus, they’re considered hypoallergenic. However, a lot of work goes into maintaining their coats to keep them healthy.

Siberians are entertaining cats because they are slow to mature, and it takes them around 5 years to grow out of their kitten stage. They love playing, exploring, and climbing, and enriching their environment is essential so they stay energized.

16. Singapura

Origin: Singapore
Lifespan: 9–15 years
Weight: 4–8 pounds
Height: 6–8 inches

The Singapura is considered to be the smallest cat breed. They are also one of the lowest shedding and require little grooming. Despite that, they still aren’t considered to be hypoallergenic. They are curious, intelligent cats; despite their size, their tiny frames contain a lot of personality.

They get along well with children but prefer older kids who aren’t as loud or energetic. The Singapura usually sits at your side, curled up next to you, especially in the colder months.

17. Sphynx

Origin: Toronto, Canada
Lifespan: 9–15 years
Weight: 6–12 pounds
Height: 8–10 inches

The best way to eliminate shedding altogether is to get rid of hair! And that’s precisely what the Sphynx offers; they don’t shed simply because they cannot. It’s important to note that some are not completely bald but have a thin layer of peach fuzz.

This near-nakedness does not mean they don’t require any grooming care. Instead of looking after hair, you must bathe them frequently so their skin remains oil-free and healthy. Sphynx cats are playful, loving, and sociable and love the company of people and pets, even dogs. They are smart and can even learn some tricks!

18. Tonkinese

Origin: United States, Thailand, Canada
Lifespan: 12–16 years
Weight: 8–12 pounds
Height: 7–10 inches

The Tonkinese have low-shedding, short, silky coats that come in around 12 colors and patterns. A weekly brushing should be enough to keep their coats healthy. While they are not considered entirely hypoallergenic, it’s easier to manage around them if your allergy isn’t severe.

They are intelligent and active and love playing with toys. You can even teach them a few tricks to keep them engaged and entertained. They love spending time with their owners and are wonderful companions. They get along well with other cats and don’t like being alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Non-Shedding Really Mean a Cat Doesn’t Ever Shed?

Non-shedding generally describes cats that shed very little, which you’ve probably noticed on our list. Some of these cats will shed, but it doesn’t happen all year. Some cats, like the Russian Blue, don’t shed except for two to three weeks. Other cats don’t shed at all because they have no fur or shed minimally and need only a weekly brushing.

Why Are Some Non-Shedding Breeds Not Hypoallergenic?

Just because a cat doesn’t shed it doesn’t necessarily mean they will be hypoallergenic. Arguably, no cat is 100% hypoallergenic because all cats produce the Fel d 1 protein that flares up human allergies. So, even cats with short fur or barely any fur can still cause allergies to flare because they groom themselves.

However, while all cats produce this protein, some irritate allergies less than others, causing fewer symptoms.

Are All Shorthaired Cats Non-Shedding?

The length of a cat’s fur does not indicate how much they shed. On the contrary, we have some very fluffy kitties on our list! Plus, shorthaired cats can shed all the time. For example, there is a misconception that Siamese cats don’t shed. In fact, Siamese cats shed all the time, but it’s just not as noticeable because their fur is so small and short.

Final Thoughts

Even the most devoted cat lover admits that dealing with cat hair can sometimes be frustrating. And this is especially true if you are also an allergy sufferer. Hopefully, you’ve found a cat from our list that makes owning one a little bit easier. Not every cat will be suitable if you have allergies, but even non-shedding cats that aren’t considered hypoallergenic are easier to live with than cats that leave hairballs all over the house.
