Bearded dragons, or beardies, as they are affectionately known, are omnivores that eat insects and plants in the wild. Since their diet in captivity should mimic their natural meals, your bearded dragon should enjoy a spread of roughly 80% plant material such as kale, dandelion leaves or collard greens, and 20% insects like mealworms and crickets. While cats and dogs shouldn’t eat hot peppers due to the spicy compound that irritates their digestive system, your bearded dragon benefits from all types of peppers, including green pepper. Here’s what you need to know about your beardie’s diet, including how much green pepper is good for them to eat.

What Do Bearded Dragons Eat?

Bearded dragons love to crunch on vegetables and insects. Some fruits are okay, but only in moderation.

Some fruits and vegetables are not safe at all for your bearded dragon. For example, citrus, rhubarb, and avocados are strictly off-limits since they’re toxic to beardies. Other vegetables, such as corn and lettuce, aren’t toxic but can be dangerous in excess. Corn contains calcium-binding properties that can be damaging to your beardie in large amounts. Iceberg lettuce isn’t dangerous, but offers little nutrition to your beardie and can cause diarrhea.

Most dark green vegetables are excellent meal options for bearded dragons, but don’t overdo it with spinach, as this leafy green is high in oxalates that may contribute to the formation of kidney stones. Some dark green herbs, such as parsley and cilantro, are also good choices.

Here's a safe list of vegetables and fruits that your beardie can eat:
  • Collard greens
  • Mustard greens
  • Dandelion greens
  • Kale
  • Clover
  • Raspberries
  • Apricots*
  • Dates*
  • Strawberries
  • Figs

Note: Remove stone/seed before feeding

Many other produce options are safe, but not as nutritious. Basically, the bulk of your beardie’s diet should consist of dark green vegetables and dense fruits. Avoid fruits and vegetables that are mostly comprised of water and fiber, such as apples and lettuce.

Are Green Peppers Safe for Bearded Dragons?

Green peppers are absolutely safe for bearded dragons, but red, yellow, and orange peppers are even better. Bell peppers are rich in antioxidants, potassium, folate, and vitamins, particularly vitamin C, which is essential to guinea pigs. All of these nutrients are crucial to your beardie’s well-being, which make peppers a nutritious snack.

However, bell peppers also have a high water content and should be fed in moderation to avoid stomach upset. Additionally, these veggies don’t have a lot of calcium and contain high levels of phosphorus, which can further deplete their calcium supply. Feeding too many bell peppers can result in low calcium levels, which can lead to metabolic bone disease.

If you’re going to feed green peppers to your beardie, make sure to carve out the core and seeds first. As with all fruits and vegetables, opt for organic to decrease the risk of exposing your pet to harmful pesticides, and always wash produce before feeding.

Can Bearded Dragons Eat Hot Peppers?

It’s important to note that sometimes green peppers are immature peppers that would’ve turned another color if they had been allowed to ripen. However, in other cases they are a different plant altogether, which only produces green peppers.

The good news is that all peppers are safe for bearded dragons in moderation. Even hot peppers, that make humans feel like they want to breathe fire, are safe for dragons to eat, such as jalapeños and habaneros. These spicy peppers contain a lot of water, just like bell peppers, so limit their consumption to small amounts once a month because too much capsaicin may cause digestive upset.

Final Thoughts

Green peppers are safe for your bearded dragon to eat in moderation. Due to the large amount of water, you should only give peppers to your dragon occasionally to avoid digestive upset. All types of peppers are safe for your beardie since they aren’t toxic. Red or yellow peppers are the most nutritious though and are preferred over green or spicy peppers.
