Goji berries, or wolfberries, are red berries native to Asia that have been used for hundreds of years as a superfood and medicine. People have recently been consuming goji berries in dried form, raw, cooked, and in drinks such as juices. They have purported health benefits and are widely considered a superfood. Dogs can eat goji berries in moderation.

Goji berries don’t contain any toxic substances, but some precautions should be taken when giving them to your dog. If your dog is on medication or pregnant, consult your vet before giving them any goji berries. Too many goji berries can give your dog diarrhea, vomiting, and indigestion.

Are Goji Berries Healthy for Dogs?

Due to their protein and antioxidants, goji berries are considered healthy for dogs. They pack a nutritional punch, and they offer a boost to your dog’s diet.

Goji berries have purported health claims, but no studies have proved they can benefit canines. Some of the health claims around goji berries and their use in humans have been grossly exaggerated, such as being able to prevent breast cancer. While many health claims about goji berries haven’t been proven, the benefits for dogs may stem from their nutritional content, such as promoting healthy eyes and a healthy immune system.

Goji berries can help regulate metabolism and protect cells. They contain high amounts of vitamins C, B, and E, antioxidants, and protein. They’re high in fiber and contain copper, zinc, and selenium, all of which help promote a healthy immune system and boost its function.

How Many Goji Berries Can My Dog Eat?

The number of goji berries a dog can eat as a portion depends on their size. Typically, it’s recommended that small dogs eat up to five a day, while large dogs should eat no more than 10. They can be dried or fresh, but be wary of giving your dog juices or preparations containing goji berries. It can be difficult to know what other ingredients are added, such as sugar and artificial sweeteners, such as xylitol, which is very toxic to dogs.

It’s best to stick to the berries themselves. Don’t give your dog too many goji berries since they can cause gastrointestinal upset. If your dog takes any medicines for conditions such as diabetes or medication to lower blood pressure, check with your vet before giving them goji berries, as they can interfere with the actions of these medications and change how they work.

There are many berries and fruits that dogs can eat that also boost their immune systems and provide antioxidant action. Fruits such as apples and bananas are high in vitamins and fiber, but they must be prepared. For example, removing the banana peel and peeling and cutting apples into small pieces is recommended to prevent choking.

There are many healthful berries that dogs can eat, such as blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. These berries contain antioxidants and phytochemicals, which have been shown in studies to have cancer-fighting properties in humans. However, these berries should also be limited to a small handful a day.

Cranberries are another berry that dogs can eat, and they contain high amounts of manganese and copper as well as plenty of vitamins. However, be wary of store-bought dried cranberries, as they can have other ingredients such as sugar, salt, or xylitol.

Final Thoughts

Goji berries have been known as a superfood for many years, and they are safe to give to dogs in small amounts. They can be very healthy; they help to provide an extra boost of antioxidants and vitamins to your dog’s diet. However, they are not the only foods that can do this, and ensuring a balanced diet is the best way to keep your dog fit and healthy.

Other superfoods dogs can eat also contain antioxidants and vitamins, such as blueberries, carrots, pumpkin, spinach, and dark leafy greens. You should always check with your vet before feeding your dog anything new since it could interfere with medication or might not be suitable for your dog.
