Many people keep coconut oil on hand for various reasons, as it has many uses—it’s even an excellent lip balm and effective moisturizer. With all the many health benefits coconut oil has to offer, can you put coconut oil on your dog’s paws?

The short answer is yes, you can use coconut oil on your dog’s paws. However, before you go slathering coconut oil on your dog’s paws, let’s explore this topic in more detail to be safe.

What Is Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is a plant-based edible oil that comes from pressing the pale flesh from inside the coconut. Interestingly, the consistency changes depending on temperature—it has a solid consistency at room temperature and liquefies when heated. This oil has many nutrients, such as essential fatty acids and vitamin E, and it can be as a topical ointment.

How Safe Is Coconut Oil for My Dog’s Paws?

Coconut oil is a natural antibacterial agent, and when your dog has cracked and dry paws, coconut oil can indeed help soothe the rough pads. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves—coconut oil is safe for your dog, but only in small amounts. If you slather a good amount on your dog’s paw pads and your dog licks it off, it could have an adverse reaction, such as diarrhea. Your dog could also be allergic to coconut, and you should be aware of the potential side effects.

When using it as a soothing ointment for cracked paws, ensure you thoroughly rub a small amount of the oil so your dog doesn’t mistake it for a treat and lick it off. If you use coconut oil for this purpose, use virgin coconut oil, as this type is best for dogs. Start slowly with small amounts and monitor your dog for signs of adverse side effects.

How Often Should I Put Coconut Oil on My Dog’s Paws?

You can use it daily if needed, but a minimum of once a week is recommended to use topically on your dog’s pads. Rub a small amount onto the affected area, preferably at night while your dog has gone to bed for the evening—that way, he won’t slip if you have hard floors.

We recommend checking with your veterinarian before using coconut oil to ensure it’s safe for your dog, especially if your dog has any medical issues. Never apply coconut oil to burnt pads, such as a burn from hot pavement. Your veterinarian will need to assess the injury in such a case.
