Diet and nutrition play a vital role in a turtle’s growth, development, and overall health and well-being. Different species of turtles have their own unique dietary requirements. Some turtles are more carnivorous, while others eat a mainly herbivorous diet. When it comes to feeding your turtle the right diet, it’s essential to know what your turtle’s species needs to eat. So, crickets can be completely safe for some turtles to eat, while other turtles don’t need them to be included in their diets.

Should I Feed My Turtle Crickets?

Most species of turtles that are common household pets are omnivorous and can eat crickets. This includes Box Turtles, Red-Eared Sliders, and Painted Turtles. Crickets are a nutritious snack that’s an excellent source of protein and so can be included in your turtle’s diet,1 but only in limited amounts.

On average, foods that are fed to turtles should contain approximately twice as much calcium as phosphorus, but crickets have a low calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Crickets should be gut loaded with a high-calcium feed just prior to feeding them or additional calcium supplementation should be given with each meal of crickets.

Make sure to only purchase your crickets from a pet store, a cricket farm, or feed ones you have bred yourself. Catching your own crickets may be more cost-efficient, but there’s a chance that the cricket may be carrying parasites or is affected by pesticides. So, it could end up costing you more if your turtle ends up getting sick from eating a bad cricket.

Are There Health Risks for Turtles That Eat Too Many Crickets?

It’s important to find the right balance of protein for your turtle because consuming too much protein over an extended period can cause health issues. One of the most common health issues caused by excessive protein consumption in shell pyramiding.

Shell pyramiding occurs in both tortoises and turtles and causes upward growth of their scutes. The growth eventually takes on the shape of a pyramid and can cause a variety of other health issues. It can intrude on a turtle’s lungs and affect breathing. It can also weaken their legs and cause premature arthritis. If left untreated, severe pyramiding can even be fatal because it can affect the spinal cord and cause paralysis.

The ideal diet for your pet turtle will vary depending on their species and age. It’s important to carefully research the correct diet for your pet to keep them healthy.

In general, turtles can eat a variety of greens and animal proteins. Dark leafy greens, like romaine lettuce, mustard greens, and dandelion greens, are usually safe choices. Turtles can also enjoy a variety of grasses and herbs, including cilantro, clover, and parsley. Some other vegetables that are safe for turtles to eat include green beans, bell peppers, and broccoli.

Turtles will also require some protein in their diet. Along with crickets, most turtles can also safely eat grasshoppers, moths, slugs, and earthworms. Aquatic turtles and larger turtles may prefer eating small fish, shrimp, and small amphibians.

While turtles can safely eat some fruit, it’s best to only give them as special treats because of their high sugar content. Some fruits that turtles can enjoy are strawberries, apples, bananas, melons, and peaches.

Many pet turtle owners will feed a commercial pelleted diet, supplemented with other food items to provide a balanced overall diet.

Final Thoughts

In general, turtles can eat crickets. Some species can have them as a regular part of their diet, while others can eat them as occasional snacks. So, make sure to do research on specific turtle species before you bring one home as a pet. If you are ever in doubt, you can always consult a veterinarian with experience with exotic pets and reptiles to ensure your turtle’s eating a safe and nutritious diet.
