Celebrating Thanksgiving with My Pets, Blue & Subi

Hi, I’m Amanda! Read my introduction to learn more about me and Blue, my fluffy fire point Himalayan-Persian cat.
Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays in my house — a day for family, gratitude, and, of course, unreal food. And this year, just like any other year, there are two special guests who deserve a little homemade meal of their own: Blue and Subi. Having them take part in our dinner has a way of making every occasion feel more festive. They are always part of the action, lurking wherever the crowd is as if waiting for inevitable crumbs to fall. So, this is how we do Thanksgiving in our house, always ensuring to include our furry family members.
Turkey Time
My siblings, parents, and I all take turns hosting different holidays, and Thanksgiving happens to be the one we get to organize each year. As the turkey roasts in the oven, the aroma wafts through the house, slowly drawing a crowd of furry paws and curious noses. Blue and Subi position themselves near the kitchen, watching me with wide-eyed and expectant expressions. It’s clear they can sense something special is on the horizon.
To prepare for their Thanksgiving feast, I shared some plain liver and turkey, free of any seasoning. After all, while sharing is caring, it’s most important to be mindful of their dietary needs. Blue and Subi get to eat before the rest of the fam in hopes they’ll be satiated enough to not beg tableside. This is more of a Subi characteristic than Blue, but both have ways of getting extra turkey around the holidays.
Once their little mini-meals are ready, I let each kid bring a dish to our designated feeding spots. Blue’s a true lady and takes her time, savoring each bite. Subi, on the other hand, inhales hers as if this is the first time she’s ever eaten. Fairly certain she doesn’t even chew. Naturally, Blue dives into an after-dinner grooming session. Not sure about other cats, but when she’s had a great meal, her first instinct is to top it off with cat hair. Fur-ssert perhaps? Her little purrs echo the satisfaction of a feast fit for a queen.
Gratitude
Thanksgiving gives us space to reflect on what truly matters: family, friendship, moments of joy, big and small, and gratitude for all the life lessons we’ve endured and grown from over the past year. Getting the chance to share a bit of turkey with Blue and Subi is a nice reminder that our pets are part of our families and also deserve celebration. So, as you gather around the table with your family this holiday season, I encourage you to consider including your furry babies in the festivities. A little home-cooked treat, an extra cuddle, or ensuring they make it into the annual family picture can make the day even more special.
Wrapping Up
As you can imagine, hosting and the holidays keep you in the moment, so my pictures are of Blue having her leftover meal a day later. The rest of the pictures are ones of Blue I just happen to love.
Ultimately, Thanksgiving isn’t about the turkey; it’s about spreading love—whether with your fellow humans or beloved pets. Here’s to many more Thanksgivings filled with gratitude, joy, and the occasional turkey treat for Blue and Subi.
