Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are very polarizing dogs. You’ll find owners who raised nothing but Chihuahuas, and people who are adamant about never getting one. And that’s understandable. Because in that tiny little package of a dog lies one giant heart.

It seems they’re fearless and actually enjoying punching well above their weight class—especially if they’re trying to protect their owners.

And their trademark yipping and yapping… While most Chihuahua owners understand that this is a default defense mechanism, others tend to find it somewhat aggravating and intimidating.

However, new owners are being found through Chihuahua mixed breeds.

Our 23 Favorite Chihuahua Mixed Breeds

The Chihuahua is actually one of the more popular crossbreeding partners around. They’re often used for their small size to effectively create “miniature versions” of the other mate. However, breeders have quickly found that the Chihuahua’s strong dominant personality remains in just about every single crossbreed.

Chugs are surely a sight to see. They’re short and slim like a Chihuahua but retain the same smushed face of a Pug. But don’t let their awkward looks tell you otherwise, but these pups are some extremely affectionate and playful dogs.

However, they may have a bit of an independent streak which can make them a bit stubborn. But that aside, Chugs are great family dogs that get along well with other pets and children.

2. Silkyhuahua (Silky Terrier x Chihuahua Mixed Breed)

The Silkyhuahua is a hybrid breed that’s part Chihuahua and part Silky Terrier. The first thing you’ll notice is that the Terrier genes really shine through when it comes to appearance. This breed normally inherits the Silky Terrier’s thick double coat.

They make for great companion dogs as well and just love snuggling up with their owners. However, they can be stubborn and even get aggressive towards strangers and small children. But when paired with the right person, this dog can provide much-needed love and loyalty.

3. Chin-Wa (Japanese Chin x Chihuahua Mix)

This designer dog is a mix between the Chihuahua and the Japanese Chin. And due to their parentage would love nothing more than to be the center of attention all the time. They are extremely sociable dogs that absolutely love people.

But like most Chihuahua mixes, they have a stubborn streak. And while they may take center stage, many times they act on their own direction. The Chin-Wa is the diva of the Chihuahua mixed breeds.

4. Cheagle (Beagle x Chihuahua Mixed Breed)

One of the most popular Chihuahua mixes is the Cheagle. This half-Beagle half-Chihuahua pup is literally the best of both worlds. They’re super fun-loving dogs with lots of energy and love to go around.

And although they’re part Beagle, they’re far too small to be a working hunting dog. However, they pull their weight by being excellent companion dogs.

5. Scotchi (Scottish Terrier x Chihuahua Mix)

This is one Chihuahua mixed breed that really doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Although formally recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, they’re relatively low key when it comes to Chihuahua-derived breeds. They’re a mix of Scottish Terrier and Chihuahuas.

They’re a regal pooch carrying the air of nobility (and signature beard) that comes along Scotty Dogs while maintaining the bold nature of Chihuahuas. This being said, they are not ideal for homes with children. They love and crave attention like any other dog, but only from a very trusted individual—which typically only extends to their master.

6. Chipin (Miniature Pinscher x Chihuahua Mix)

This small dog hybrid is a cross between the Miniature Pinscher and the Chihuahua. And if you’re looking for a toy-sized family dog, the Chipin is actually a solid choice. While most Chihuahua breeds can be stubborn or aggressive, the Chipin tends to break that mold.

They are extremely intelligent, fast learners, and take to training very well. They also have a much more mild-mannered disposition making them good around children. Add that to the fact that they’re low maintenance dogs, the Chipin is a viable contender for best toy-sized family pup.

7. Chi-Poo (Poodle x Chihuahua Mixed Breed)

If Chipins are among the best family dogs, the Chi-Poo is one of the best dogs for busy, single owners. These little tykes are pretty low maintenance only needing occasional grooming. They’re also just fine being left alone. So, if you’ll need to leave them alone for extended periods, they’ll be alright.

Just remember that when you do get home, they’re going to want to love you as hard as they can. They’re absolutely great with people! And not only that, but they’re hypoallergenic too. So, if you’ve got dog fur and dander allergies, you may want to consider a Chi-Poo in your life.

8. Boxachi (Boxer x Chihuahua Mix)

One of the newest and strangest Chihuahua mixed breeds is the Boxachi. They’re a cross between the Chihuahua and the Boxer. And while this breed hasn’t quite caught in yet, they’re definitely sure to. They’ve got the strong personality of a Chihuahua with the playful goofiness of a Boxer. And they’re loyal to boot.

One thing to note about this breed is its size. It’s kind of a grab bag when it comes to how big they’ll get. They can weigh ranging anywhere from 6 lbs to 40 lbs! It all depends on whether the pup inherited more Boxer or Chihuahua traits.

9. Italian Greyhuahua (Italian Greyhound x Chihuahua Mix)

If you’re looking to spice up your life just a bit, consider getting an Italian Greyhuahua. They’re an Italian Greyhound-Chihuahua hybrid that’s chock full of energy and zip! The breed tends to maintain the slight of the Greyhound but at the Chihuahua’s size.

But they do carry a commonality found in most Chihuahua breeds. They’re known to be pretty stubborn—which means they aren’t going to be the easiest to train. But once properly trained, they add a gigantic personality boost to your life and anyone around them.

10. Chiweenie (Dachshund x Chihuahua Mixed Breed)

Chiweenies might not be the biggest pup in the pack, but they sure have got some spirit. As a cross between the Dachshund and Chihuahua, this hybrid has got a giant personality. Both of the parent lines tend to get a bad rap for being aggressive and mean, but for some reason, this pup didn’t acquire those traits at all.

In fact, the Chiweenie is great for families with children, other dogs, or even other small animal pets! And yes, they do bark—a lot. But that’s mostly them just trying to show their affection, gratitude, and excitement.

11. Chizer (Miniature Schnauzer x Chihuahua Mix)

This hybrid is a mix between the Chihuahua and the Miniature Schnauzer. And they are some of the best companion dogs you’ll find anywhere. And while they’re great companion dogs, you wouldn’t really want them around anyone else.

They have a very low tolerance for people other than their masters—especially small children. In order to prevent any issues, you’ll need to introduce and socialize these pups at as early an age as possible.

12. Labrahuahua (Labrador Retriever x Chihuahua Mix)

The Labrahuahua is among the most patient and friendly of all the Chihuahua mixed breeds. And that’s because they’re a Chihuahua and Labrador Retriever crossbreed. And in this breed, you get the best of both worlds.

You get the strong personality of the Chihuahua—which comes across as sassy than anything else—and the loving patience and gentleness of a Labrador Retriever. This mix makes for an excellent dog for families of all sizes and ages.

13. Shi Chi (Shih Tzu x Chihuahua Mixed Breed)

This Shih Tzu hybrid is a popular Chihuahua mix, mostly due to their adorable fluffy coat and friendly disposition. They are affectionate little dogs that make fast friends with other pets but can get snappy if they are played with roughly or if they feel threatened. Although they can have large personalities that scarcely fit into their tiny bodies, they can be fairly timid at times, especially around strangers.

Shih Tzus are usually easy to train while Chihuahuas are known to be stubborn and can be a challenge to train. The Shi Chi may lean either way, but one thing you can be sure of is a highly sensitive pooch that needs a calm approach when training.

14. Chimation (Dalmatian x Chihuahua Mix)

If you are on the lookout for a truly unique hybrid dog, look no further than the Chimation! This unlikely pairing of the Chihuahua and Dalmation results in a small to medium-sized dog that has plenty of personality, and energy to match. These spotted little pooches are a rare breed and can be hard to find.

They are alert and somewhat anxious dogs that can be wary of strangers. They can be snappy and impatient at times, and so we do not recommend them for families with small children around.

15. Bolo-Chi (Bolognese x Chihuahua Mixed Breed)

The Bolo-Chi is a hybrid mix of the Chihuahua and the little-known Bolognese. It is a rare breed, with little known about its origins. One thing you can be sure of is companionship; these are lap dogs through and through. They are generally friendly dogs but can inherit the Chihuahuas distrust of strangers.

Early socialization and training are essential for this breed, especially if there are children involved. They can be snappy little dogs with an abundance of attitude!

16. Chi-Apso (Lhasa Apso x Chihuahua Mix)

Both the Chihuahua and Lhasa Apso are friendly and full of personality, and you can expect the Chi-Apso to be much the same. They are loyal and eager to please animals, which makes them easy to train and an ideal choice if you are a first-time dog owner. They are also playful pooches who adore children and will get along well with other pets, provided they are socialized early on.

They are gentle, quiet, and loving dogs that will love nothing more than cuddling on your lap or shadowing your every movement!

17. Boston Huaha (Boston Terrier x Chihuahua)

A mix of the Chihuahua and Boston Terrier, the Boston Huaha is an affectionate little pooch with a low propensity to bark, making them ideal for apartment living. They love to be involved with whatever it is you may be doing but are simultaneously content to do their own thing and are generally fine to be left alone at home.

They do have a stubborn side, which can make them a challenge to train and this can translate into snappiness and assertiveness. While they can be trained out of this somewhat bossy trait, we do not recommend them around children as they are easily intimidated and thus likely to lash out.

18. Bullhuahua (Bulldog x Chihuahua Mix)

The Bullhuahua — a Chihuahua and Bulldog hybrid — is a gentle and loving breed, that doesn’t require massive amounts of exercise or maintenance. These dogs love to be around people, and their calm and even-temperament is not easily disturbed. This makes them an ideal family pet that can be wholeheartedly trusted around children, provided they are socialized early.

Although they can be wary of strangers or new pets, they are seldom aggressive and will love to spend most of their time curled up on your lap.

19. Chi-Spaniel (Cocker Spaniel x Chihuahua)

This adorable Cocker Spaniel hybrid is a sweet and gentle breed that gets along famously with children and other pets alike. They are almost too friendly, though, and this gentle disposition combined with a low propensity for barking makes them less than ideal watchdogs. They are sensitive dogs who will need a gentle hand when training.

These dogs will often attach themselves to one owner and will suffer separation anxiety when left alone for too long.

20. Pomchi (Pomeranian x Chihuahua)

This playful Pomeranian hybrid is energetic and athletic, but quintessential lapdogs, too, and will often attach themselves to one owner. They are known to be somewhat yappy pooches and will bark at almost any given opportunity. This makes them great little guard dogs but not ideal for apartment living.

They are sensitive dogs that are wary of strangers, and their alert and protective nature can cause them to be snappy at times. This makes them ideally suited to singles, as they may get easily overwhelmed by children.

21. Toxirn (Cairn Terrier x Chihuahua)

The Toxirn is a hybrid mix of Chihuahua and the Cairn Terrier. They are confident, outgoing, and friendly dogs that form strong bonds with their owners, and don’t like to be left alone for extended periods. They are loyal and protective dogs, and this can sometimes translate into aggression towards strangers and small children. They love activity as much as they love curling up in their owner’s lap and will only require a moderate amount of exercise.

These dogs have personalities that are far larger than their size, and this can sometimes get them into trouble. But proper training and early socialization will usually keep them in check.

22. Chion (Papillon x Chihuahua)

A hybrid mix with the Papillon, or “butterfly dog”, the Chion will often inherit this parent breeds characteristically large ears. They are energetic little pooches that love to play and will usually get along great with other pets and small children. That said, they can be fairly sensitive. They are an adorable breed that will quickly win over the coldest of hearts.

These dogs have a stubborn streak that can make them a challenge to train, and they get attached to their family and will become anxious if left alone for long periods.

23. Chorkie (Yorkshire Terrier x Chihuahua Mixed Breed)

The Chorkie is an adorable cross between a Chihuahua and Yorkshire Terrier. They are playful and friendly little pooches who are generally great with children and other pets. That said, they are highly loyal dogs that get very attached to their owners and may show some aggression when that bond is threatened in any way. These little dogs will swiftly become your shadow and want to be a part of everything you are doing!

They will suffer greatly from separation anxiety if left alone, and so are not an ideal choice if you are away a lot.

Conclusion

When it comes to mixed Chihuahua breeds, you’ll definitely find some commonalities with a standard Chihuahua. They’ll be bold with strong personalities and sometimes stubborn as all get out. But they’ll love their owners deeply and be among the most loyal of dogs.

But there are a few wildcards thrown into the mix such as the Labrahuahua, Chipin, and Chi-Poo. These dogs may even appeal to the most anti-Chihuahua dog owners.
