What you put on your dog’s fur can be just as important as what you put in their food. Dog shampoo is a common pet care item, and yet many people do not realize that it may expire. Dog shampoo does expire, but it typically has a long shelf life. Once the shampoo has expired, it may no longer be effective in cleaning your dog’s coat.

It’s important to check the expiration date on the bottle or package to ensure that the product is still usable. After that, the shampoo will not be as potent, and it may even start to smell bad or cause skin irritation.

Whether you’re looking to preserve the freshness of your pooch’s hair or just avoid wasting money, here’s everything you need to know about dog shampoo expiration.

What Should I Do if My Dog’s Shampoo Has Expired?

Always check the expiration date. If a dog’s shampoo has expired, it is recommended that the pet owner discard the product and find a new one. Shampoo that has expired may not be effective in cleaning a dog’s coat and could lead to skin irritation, infections, or worse—serious health complications. Follow the expiration date on the bottle and show your dog the love and care they deserve.

How Can I Tell if My Dog’s Shampoo Has Expired?

All dog shampoos have an expiration date. No matter how good they are, they will expire over time, but not all manufacturers label their bottles, so how can you tell? As dog shampoo expiration dates vary, it is important to always check the label. The expiration date can generally be found on the bottom, side, or back of a bottle. If it has no expiration date, don’t buy it. If you already own a bottle but cannot see the use-by date, throw it away.

The lack of an expiration date on dog shampoo makes it difficult to tell if it’s still fresh, and using expired shampoo could harm your pet.

If the Product Isn’t Labeled

You can tell if dog shampoo has expired in a number of ways. Check the inside of the bottle first. It’s a clear sign it’s past its use-by date if the walls of the bottle have changed color or you can see fungi or bacteria growing. Pour some out and smell it. An expired shampoo may become more watery and will not smell as strong.

If you notice that the shampoo looks the same and smells the same, check your pet. Do they look clean? Expired shampoo won’t be as effective when it comes to removing dirt clumps and removing odor. If you notice your dog scratching himself more than usual, or if their skin looks dry, red, or irritated, you may need to throw out your dog shampoo.

How Long Does Dog Shampoo Last Once Open?

If unopened, dog shampoo can last up to 3 years, but once opened, it expires very quickly since oxygen changes the chemical composition of the shampoo. Most dog shampoos last between 12 and 18 months once opened. Organic shampoos, on the other hand, can last up to 36 months. The chemical makeup of medical shampoos, such as flea shampoos, makes them expire faster at around 6 months or less.

When buying dog shampoo, check the label for an expiration date and store it at room temperature and somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight. This will help you maximize the effectiveness of the product for long-term use. The shampoo’s shelf life can be shortened if it is exposed to high temperatures or humidity.

How Long Can You Use Dog Shampoo After the Expiration Date?

The expiration date on a dog shampoo bottle is the date after which the manufacturer no longer guarantees the product’s full potency and effectiveness. After this date, the shampoo may still be usable, but it may not be as effective in cleaning your dog’s coat. How long you can actually use the shampoo after this date depends on a variety of factors, including how well the bottle has been stored and how often it has been opened.

Although it may not seem important, the expiration date is there for a reason. Several days after its expiration date, a product may still work, but it may be less effective at cleaning, or worse, it may cause irritation or infection to the skin. The guideline is in place because the product is best before that date and it is not worth taking the risk. If the expiration date has passed, either don’t buy it or throw it away if you already have it at home.

What Should I Do if There’s No Expiration Date on the Shampoo Bottle?

If there is no expiration date on the shampoo bottle, it should be used within 3 years of purchase. Shampoo is a product that can go bad over time, mainly due to the ingredients it contains. The preservatives in shampoo help to extend its shelf life, but they eventually break down and the product can become contaminated. If it smells bad, has a discolored appearance, or has lumps in it, it should be discarded immediately.

Do Expired Shampoos Have Any Side Effects?

The ingredients in shampoo may lose their potency after a certain amount of time and potentially degrade into other chemicals which could lead to skin irritation or hair loss. These harmful chemicals could also be absorbed through the skin or inhaled, which could potentially lead to health problems. Additionally, expired shampoos may contain bacteria or fungi that could cause an infection.

If I Run Out, Can I Use Human Shampoo Instead?

Human shampoo is not typically recommended for use on dogs, as it may be too harsh for their skin. Dogs have a different pH balance than humans and using a shampoo that is too alkaline can cause skin irritation. Human shampoos also often contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs if ingested.

Most human shampoos are actually quite aggressive, and while some dog owners may choose to use human shampoo on their pets if they have a very mild formula, it is generally recommended that dog owners use a shampoo specifically designed for dogs.

Conclusion

Dog shampoo does expire, but it usually takes a long time for it to go bad. It typically takes 2–3 years for dog shampoo to expire. However, it is always a good idea to check the expiration date on the bottle before using it. It’s important not to use any degraded products on a dog’s skin and fur and to discard any shampoo that is past its expiration date.
