Before You Start

Grooming your golden retriever at home will require time and effort, and you will need to gain your dog’s trust and get them comfortable with a regular routine.

Before you begin the grooming routine, gather the required tools. You may need:

  • Dog shampoo
  • Ear cleaning solution
  • A quality dog brush or shedding blade
  • Grooming clippers
  • Clipper and blade coolant
  • Nail clippers or grinder

  • Treats

Once you have your tools and space ready, you can begin your pet’s grooming routine, but before you start, here are some tips and tricks to make it easier for you.

The 10 Tips & Tricks to Make Golder Retriever Gromming Easier

1. Calm Owner, Calm Dog

Golden retrievers can easily pick up on emotions, so they will know if you are nervous. If you are anxious, they will feed off that energy and likely try to escape, making grooming more difficult.

Exercise your pet before grooming because the dog will be harder to groom if they are hyperactive

2. Start With the Nails

Nail trims every four to six weeks are an essential part of keeping your dog well-groomed. Be sure not to forget the declaw, the nail some dogs have on the side of the foot.

Avoid cutting the nail too short. Cutting over the quick (the bundle of nerves and blood vessels inside the nail) can cause pain and bleeding. It’s always a good idea to keep handy a bit of styptic powder to stop the bleeding if you accidentally cut the quick.

3. Spray Coat Before Brushing

Reduce Static and encourage the brush to glide through the fur by spraying it with a quality coat spray before you brush. You can spray the section you intend to start with and move along. Spraying the fur will assist you in getting through tangles, making it a more comfortable process for both you and your dog.

4. Brush Before You Bath

Brushing your retriever before a bath is efficient and effective. It helps remove debris and dirt so you can get into the healthy fur, and it will keep the fur extra soft when you are done grooming. Be sure to check your dog’s hair for stubborn plant material like burs or blackjacks and gently remove them with a brush.

You should brush your dog regularly to help prevent matting and maintain a healthy, shiny coat.

5. Don’t Cut a Matted Coat

Cutting your dog’s matted fur can be risky since it is close to the skin. Use your fingers to gently hold your dog’s skin where the knot is while you gently comb it out bit by bit. This way, you are not tugging on the hairs and pulling at the skin. Conditioner can also make brushing out clumps easier.

6. Never Shave Your Golden retriever

You should never shave your golden retriever’s fur. Not only does it mess with their hair growth cycle, but they also have a double coat, and shaving a double coat can damage their fur, causing it to grow back coarse and itchy and sometimes not at all.

7. Choose a Functional Space

Choose a room with a surface where your dog can’t slip to make the grooming process as stress-free as possible. If your retriever is still a puppy, you can bathe them in a large sink, and if your dog is bigger, the shower or bathtub will do the trick.

You can keep a leash on your pet while they’re in the bath to prevent them from running away.

A shower head attached to a garden hose outside is a brilliant trick and will make life a lot easier!

8. Bathing Tips

Using a quality shampoo is healthier for your dog’s skin. It can even be diluted before washing to make it easier to rinse out. Do not vigorously rub as it can cause more tangles, but you can gently move the bath brush in the direction of their coat.

A golden retriever’s coat is thick and can trap soap and cause irritation and itchiness, so make sure to rinse thoroughly. A pressure shower head works well to remove soapy suds optimally.

9. Dry Them Thoroughly

If moisture is trapped under your dog’s coat, ir can cause hotspots, which golden retrievers are prone to. Microfiber towels work well and are super absorbent, but it is helpful to blow-dry any excess water afterward.

10. Use Treats

Use treats as rewards when grooming your golden retriever. They can help train your pet to become familiar and comfortable with grooming. A calm voice and words of encouragement should accompany a treat as a reward.

Benefits of Grooming

Grooming your golden retriever has both aesthetic and health benefits. The process of grooming provides you an opportunity to examine their coat, eyes, teeth, and nails and evaluate any signs that there may be a problem. You can check for lumps and bumps, ticks or fleas, and reduce cleaning time from extra shedding. Their coat will remain healthy and ventilated while helping your dog’s skin breathe by keeping grease levels low.

Grooming your dog is good for their mental health and helps you build a connection and gain their trust. Not only that, a pleasant smelling and a well-groomed dog is a joy to have around your home.

Golden retrievers are known for their luscious coats and beautiful looks, and their relaxed temperament makes grooming a pleasant experience for an owner. Regular grooming is essential for a happy and healthy pet and is a great bonding activity.

Grooming should include:

1. Brushing often

Brush your golden retriever weekly from head to toe, paying close attention to areas that are more knotted. Regular brushing will reduce shedding around your home and minimize matting.

You can use a cotton ball and mineral oil to clean these areas of your golden retriever gently. Avoid rubbing or touching the eyeball and check the ears for dirt, parasites, or any scratches to avoid infection.

4. Teeth brushing

Brushing teeth prevents and removes plaque buildup on your dog’s teeth that can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Golden retrievers are prone to dental disease, so regular brushing with a pet-friendly toothpaste is necessary to prevent infection.

5. Nail clipping

Nails that are too long can break, causing possible infection. They should be carefully clipped below the quick using good quality nail clippers. Take your time and be extra careful.
