The Maltipoo is prone to getting dirty eyes since their fur is quite long around their face. This can lead to gunk and eye goo getting caught around your Maltipoo’s eyes and leaving a dark stain. Cleaning your Maltipoo’s eyes is important when you are grooming them, and you can clean their eyes a few times a week if you notice that their eyes constantly get dirty.

Cleaning your Maltipoo’s eyes doesn’t have to be a tedious task, which is why we have compiled a list of tips and tricks to help you keep your Maltipoo’s eyes clean. Find out more below!

The 6 Tips and Tricks To Clean Maltipoo Eyes

1. Use a Pet-Safe Eye Wipe

This is one of the easier methods for cleaning your Maltipoo’s eyes, and it is fairly simple. All you will need is a pet-safe eye wipe that you can either purchase online or from your nearest pet store. Having these wipes can be handy as you do not need to create an eye-cleaning solution each time, but you can instead keep wipes with you for when you notice that your Maltipoo’s eyes need cleaning.

Do not use the wipe directly on their eye, but gently wipe away any gunk that has accumulated around your Maltipoo’s eyes. Be extra cautious when wiping away dried gunk around your Maltipoo’s eyes, as it can pull the fur.

High-quality wet wipes can help you keep your dog clean from head to tail. Our Hepper Wash Wipes are infused with natural, moisturizing ingredients that will soothe your dog's skin while effectively removing dirt and grime. 2. Warm Water and Cotton Pads

Using clean lukewarm water and a cotton pad is a simple way to clean your Maltipoo’s eyes at home. The water won’t contain any added ingredients that could burn your dogs’ eyes, so it can be useful for dogs that are sensitive to eye-cleaning solutions. All you need to do is soak a cotton pad in lukewarm water and gently rub it on the dirty areas. The lukewarm water can also help moisten dried gunk around your Maltipoo’s eyes, making it easier to use a wipe afterward.

3. Get the Fur Around Their Eyes Trimmed

Both the Maltese and Poodle in the Maltipoo are prone to having fur grow around their eyes, sometimes even covering parts of their eyes. A professional dog groomer will be able to safely trim the excess fur around your Maltipoo’s eyes. It is best to take your Maltipoo to a professional to have this done, as trying it yourself can lead to an accidental eye injury. This can help reduce the amount of gunk that gets caught on the long fur.

4. Saline Eye Drops

This is a great solution if your Maltipoo’s eyes get stuck from the gunk caught around their eyes. You can get saline eye drops from a veterinarian to help with this problem as they can help moisten the eye and help rinse the gunk out. These eye drops can also be beneficial if your Maltipoo suffers from eye issues due to allergies or dust and dirt irritation. Your dog’s veterinarian will advise you on how often you should use the drops, and how many drops to use per eye.

5. Saline Solution and Cotton Pads

You can make your saline cleaning solution at home using salt and water. This can then be applied to a cotton pad and used to clean your Maltipoo’s eyes. You will need a solution of half a tablespoon of sea salt per 250 ml of clean lukewarm water. Mix the solution well and soak a cotton pad into it, then use it to wipe your Maltipoo’s eyes clean. Be careful though, because the salt can sting your Maltipoo’s eyes slightly, so first test how your dog reacts to this solution and lower the amount of salt you use. Also, make sure to not get any in your dog’s eyes!

6. Chamomile Tea Solution

Chamomile tea and water is a gentle solution you can create to gently clean your Maltipoo’s eyes. Chamomile can work to clean your dog’s eye while also having natural anti-inflammatory properties. However, the solution can be irritating to your dogs’ eyes, so lower the amount of chamomile you place into the solution if you think it might be too strong for your dogs’ eyes. You can simply steep a pure organic chamomile teabag in hot water and wait for it to cool.

The water should have a faint yellowish tint, and it should not be too dark in color as the solution might be too strong for your Maltipoo’s eyes. You can then dip a cotton pad into the solution and gently wipe your dogs’ eyes with it. Please make sure your dog does not consume leftover chamomile tea and prepare a fresh solution every day.

Tips for Cleaning Your Maltipoo’s Eyes

Here are some steps to take when cleaning your Maltipoo’s eyes:
  • Choose an eye-cleaning solution of your choice. The solution should be suitable for your dog without causing any irritation to their eyes. You can choose from pet-safe eye wipes to a homemade chamomile or saline solution.
  • If you are using a homemade eye-cleaning solution, dip a cotton pad into the solution and squeeze excess moisture out.
  • Wet any dried gunk to help loosen it from your Maltipoo’s eyes.
  • Wipe any gunk and stains around your Maltipoo’s eyes while avoiding getting any of the solutions directly into their eyes or putting pressure directly on their eyeball.
  • Dry off any excess solution with a soft, clean towel.

Conclusion

You can clean your Maltipoo’s eyes as often as you like, depending on how quickly they get dirty. Most Maltipoos will not enjoy having their eyes cleaned, so keeping it quick and simple is important. Once you have found the eye-cleaning solution that works for you and your Maltipoo, you can clean their eyes a few times a week or only when necessary.
