How to Get Guests to Respect Blue’s Space: Amanda’s Tips & Tricks

Hi, I’m Amanda! Read my introduction to learn more about me and Blue, my fluffy fire point Himalayan-Persian cat.
Blue is a fairly social cat, but like all cats, she likes to control when and how much interaction she gets. Lounging with the calm energies in the room is certainly her preference. Being the floofy chica that she is, most people gravitate towards her. Must. Pet. Cat. As long as she’s approached with caution and warm, calm energy, she’ll usually stick around.
However, especially with littles, she darts off fairly quickly. The excessive amount of noise, sudden movements, and the need to get as close as possible are the things Blue tries to avoid. So, for anyone new looking to get up close and personal with our girl, I offer a few pieces of advice.
To Our Guests
Find a nice spot and settle in. It might take a bit for Blue to adjust to the new faces, but with a little patience, she’s bound to seek out some attention. Once you’ve mastered the art of tranquility, you can move on to the next step.
She’s fairly responsive to the typical pstpstpst catcall. Pair that with an out-reached hand and she’ll take that as a welcoming sign and meander your way when she’s ready. The running joke in our house is that when Blue walks she makes a bum bum bum bum sound (like a drum). So even if you’re not paying attention to her when she decides to strike, you’ll hear her coming from wherever she was perched.
What To Avoid
While most are fairly good at giving Blue the space she needs to adapt to guests, there are times when they notice her and are immediately drawn into her. They want to pet her, pick her up, and kiss her right on the face. I think it’s probably safe to say that most cats are easily overwhelmed by these actions and recluse. Blue’s no exception.
If you’re looking to gain her trust, the best tip I can offer is to ignore her. Blue is very much into the chase and if you’re not immediately smothering her, she’s intrigued. How can you resist my adorable face and soft fluffy coat? Offensive, honestly.
The funniest part about this is that the people who are the least interested in getting cat cuddles end up with an obsessive cat who won’t rest until she gets all the attention she wants. This is especially true for my kids. When they have lazy days or get tucked into bed, she positions herself right next to, if not on top of, them. Sadly, they’re not the biggest fans because it limits their movement. They object and she stubbornly holds her position until I call her over to a new spot. The irony of it all!
Our Home
Although Blue doesn’t want to be part of the action, she does want to share the same room as us. So, to keep her comfortable in the main space, we’ve strategically placed a few cat beds in hard-to-reach places. They don’t offer the best vantage points, but they do offer a sense of security. Here she’s able to be an observer.
We love entertaining and are grateful our pets also like interacting with our guests.
