Lemonade-pet insurance

Lemonade Pet Insurance is new to the pet insurance world, entering the fold in July 2020. The company itself began in 2016, though, providing rental and homeowners insurance. So while the company is new to the pet game, it has four years of experience and refinement of its services. What makes the company unique over others is its artificial intelligence-driven claims process that works completely online, making claim submission a breeze.

Lemonade Pet Insurance has great options, including customizable policies, wellness coverage as an add-on, affordable premiums, and a lightning-fast claims process that is all handled via the smartphone app. Coverage is highly affordable — starting as little as $10 per month — and is available for both dogs and cats and includes hospitalization, accident, and illness coverage. Lemonade is also unique in its business model, keeping a flat fee from customer’s premiums and donating leftover funds to charities chosen by the policyholders, both ensuring profitability and keeping its rates among the lowest available.

Unfortunately, there are a few downsides too, as the company doesn’t accept certain breeds beyond a certain age and is only available in 33 states and D.C. If you have a young pet and live in one of the covered areas, however, Lemonade Pet Insurance offers a highly affordable and efficient insurance option, with unique add-ons and no lifetime limits on any plan, and it donates a hefty amount to charity.

Important Features

  • Medical exam. Before signing up with Lemonade, your pet will need a full medical exam from the past 12 months if they are older than a year. Bilateral exclusions — a disease that affects both sides of the body — are considered as pre-existing and therefore not covered, including hip and elbow dysplasia, cruciate ligament issues, cataracts, and luxating patella.
  • Claims. All claims must be submitted through the Lemonade Pet Insurance app (available on Android or iOS) and must be filed within 180 days of the illness or injury occurring. Also, Lemonade does not promise any repayment timeline, although this is typically very quick, and there is direct deposit available for repayment.
  • App. Lemonade Pet Insurance is run online, and everything from claims to policy alterations is handled via the app. You can also chat with medical experts live within the app. The only customer service available outside of the app’s ecosystem is Lemonade’s 24/7 emergency number and an online contact form. The advanced automation provided by the app makes approval and payment of claims quick and simple, often even within minutes. Make sure that your phone, iPad, or tablet is compatible with the app before purchasing a policy.
  • Availability. Lemonade Pet Insurance is only available in 33 states and D.C. in the U.S. currently: AL, AZ, AR, CA, CT, GA, IL, IN, IA, MD, MI, MS, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, NJ, NM, NY, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, and WI.

Customer Service

With Lemonade Pet Insurance, customer service is a breeze and usually handled quickly and easily via the app. Lemonade has high-tech advanced automation and artificial intelligence (AI), resulting in the approval and payment of claims being made in seconds. Any other customer service queries are handled through the app and on Lemonade’s website under the “Help” tab. Support is also available by phone from Monday through Friday.

Pre-existing Conditions

Most pet insurance companies do not cover pre-existing conditions, and Lemonade is much the same, excluding coverage of pre-existing conditions from its policies. Lemonade defines pre-existing conditions in their policy as, “Any condition for which a veterinarian provided medical advice, the pet received treatment for, or the pet displayed signs or symptoms consistent with the stated condition prior to the start date of a pet insurance policy or during any waiting period.”Lemonade-pet insurance

Waiting Periods

The waiting period for Lemonade begins on the day that your chosen policy begins, and the company will only consider reimbursement for your claim outside of this initial period.

Once you activate your policy with Lemonade, there are three different timelines to be aware of:
  • 2 days for accidents
  • 14 days for illness
  • 6 months for cruciate ligament events

FAQ

How does Lemonade calculate my premium?

The premium that you pay for your pet depends on their age, breed, and of course, any optional add-ons that you choose. Lemonade does offer a discount of up to 10% for policyholders that hold an additional home insurance policy with the company.

Does Lemonade require my pet’s medical history?

Lemonade requires a medical record from an exam that took place within 12 months before your policy’s start date. It’s important to note that you’ll need a full, “nose to tail” medical exam that includes blood and fecal tests, diet and exercise details, vaccination records, medications, and the condition of their fur, eyes, ears, mouth, and joints.

Can I use any vet?

Lemonade allows you to take your dog to any vet of your choosing in the U.S., provided that they are licensed to practice veterinary care in the state that they are practicing in.

Can I increase or reduce my coverage?

You can reduce or increase your coverage with Lemonade within the first 14 days of your policy and then again thereafter annually.

How fast do claims get paid?

After you submit a claim with Lemonade, you will be asked to enter your bank account information, and once the claim is approved, you’ll get paid as quickly as possible. Lemonade aims to make reimbursement payments almost instantly, but some claims may take a while to investigate. If the claim is not your first or if there is information missing in your claim, it may take longer than usual.

What the Users Say

Since Lemonade is such a new pet insurance company, there are few customer reviews, and we couldn’t find many negative reviews. This may be because the pet insurance feature from the company is still in its infancy or because it is just so great! However, there are not many positive reviews either, so it is most likely the former.

The company has 4.9/5 stars on the iOS App Store with over 35,000 users and 4.6/5 stars on Google’s Play Store for Android users.

Divider 3Our Verdict

Lemonade Pet Insurance is a brand-new pet insurance provider, making it difficult for would-be customers to take the plunge. That said, it has a great track record with its homeowner and rental insurances, and the pet branch is unlikely to be much different.

The standout with Lemonade is the automated process of signup, claims, and payments via the app, eliminating the headache of dealing with the time-consuming processes that other insurance companies often have. This simple process makes for quicker claims and payments, all from the simplicity of a phone application. The company’s prices are also highly competitive and among some of the lowest out there.

Lemonade offers a wide variety of coverage options, with premiums from as little as $10 to coverage extending up to $100,000. This wide coverage, the simple and fast claims process, and lower-than-average prices make Lemonade Pet Insurance a promising new company in the world of pet health, and we highly recommend giving it a try.
