When Did National Fire Pup Day Get Started?
We have been celebrating National Fire Pup Day for so long that its origins are not known. We also do not know why October 1 was chosen as the day to celebrate, but many people believe that it is because that is the day that the American Kennel Club officially recognized the Dalmatian, one of the most popular fire dogs, as an official breed in 1888.
How Did Fire Dogs Come to Be?
During the 1800s, people frequently needed dogs to protect their horse-drawn carriages from being attacked by robbers and other problems. Dalmatians were especially good at the job and were frequently employed. Even as society moved away from the horse and buggy, Dalmatians could be found at the local firehouse, where firefighters would use them to help clear the streets for the engine to get through. Modern-day fire dogs can help determine the cause of a fire and locate survivors, among other duties, and they also serve as a mascot.
