National Pet ID Week will start on April 17 and continue until April 23 in 2023. This week allows pet owners to take time from their busy schedules and ensure their pet’s safety with upgraded ID tags and microchips.

Whether a dog or a cat, it’s common for pets to get lost anytime. Typically, lost pets without IDs are brought to animal shelters. In such cases, there are feeble chances that you’ll ever be reunited with your furry friend.

In fact, the ASPCA estimates that around 6.3 million pet animals are brought to shelters in the USA annually, with 3.1 million dogs and 3.2 million cats.1 Of these, only 810,000 pets are reunited with their owners. This shows how important it is to get your pet an ID tag or microchip.

If you’ve just become a pet owner, here is what you need to know about National Pet ID Week. We will also give you some tips to celebrate this event.

What Is National Pet ID Week About?

National Pet ID Week educates pet owners and tells them how vital ID tags or microchips are for their pets. Losing a pet isn’t less than a nightmare; it also brings considerable pain and suffering to the animal and its human parent.

Therefore, National Pet ID Week reminds pet parents to follow the below tips for their pet’s safety:

  • First, ensure your pet’s collar has the latest rabies tag, ID info, and city license.
  • You must also add your name, address, and contact number on the ID tag. This way, anyone who finds your missing pet can call you quickly.
  • If any information changes, update your pet’s ID tag or microchip with the current details.
  • If you aren’t home for a few days, make your pet wear a temporary tag with the information of someone who can contact you quickly.
  • Cats can easily slide through the door’s opening without you even knowing. So, it’s better to make them wear the ID tag constantly, not just before going outside.
  • Microchipping is more secure than ID tags and collars, as they can easily fall off, or someone can remove them. However, it’s not easy to detect a microchip, let alone remove it.

How to Celebrate National Pet ID Week?

As a responsible pet owner, you should take full advantage of the week by ensuring that all of your pets have proper identification if they don’t already. This could be as easy as running to the nearest pet store to grab a new collar and ID tag, or it could mean making an appointment with the vet’s office to schedule a microchipping session. Either way, take your pets’ identification seriously. You never know when they could slip out of the house or wander off and get lost, and you’ll definitely regret not getting them an ID if this happens to you.

Final Thoughts

National Pet ID Week will be celebrated from April 17 to April 23 this year. This week reminds pet owners about the massive responsibility of getting their pets an ID tag or microchip for easy identification. It also informs them about the consequences of not updating their pet’s ID tag with the latest details.
