National Walk Your Dog Day happens every year on February 22. Don’t confuse that with National Walk Your Dog Week, which falls every first week of October. If you ask your pup, every day should be a dog-walking holiday, but for this article, we’ll focus on the official one. Sorry, Fido!

So, who created this leash-centric holiday? How do you celebrate it? Was there some secret canine convention that came up with this brilliant idea? Keep reading to find out.

The Origin of National Walk Your Dog Day

Sadly, no convention of cute pups was involved in the creation of National Walk Your Dog Day. The exact details are unknown, but a popular theory revolves around Jim Buck, New York City’s first-ever professional dog walker.

The 1960s saw more women joining the workforce than ever before. As a result, family dogs were often left home alone during the long workday and not getting enough exercise. The dog walking industry was born, with Jim Buck pioneering the way.

Why February 22 was chosen as the special day is also unknown. But it certainly makes sense since February is the midpoint between winter and spring—perfect weather for a stroll with your pup.

The 10 Ways to Celebrate National Walk Your Dog Day

Your dog deserves an extra-special walk! Here are a few fun ways to celebrate National Walk Your Dog Day:

1. Take your pup to a new destination.

Sprinkle some excitement into your usual route around the block by finding a new dog-friendly place to explore. It could be a park they’ve never been to, a nature preserve, or maybe just a different neighborhood.

2. Dress up your pup in an outrageous costume.

Think Super Dog, cowboy, or whatever represents your pup the best. They may not be a fan of wearing clothes, but the head pats and attention they get will more than make up for it!

3. Give them tons of treats during your walk.

Nothing says “celebrate” like yummy treats! Buy or make some special treats and tuck them into your pocket for when you pass by notable landmarks or take breaks.

4. Invite other pooches for a pack walk.

Gather up your pup’s friends for a fun (and maybe chaotic!) walk. Make sure all the dogs get along and that everyone has the right supplies.

5. Try out a pet-friendly restaurant or cafe.

Look up some dog-friendly restaurants in your area and treat your pup to a leisurely lunch. You can enjoy a bite or two while they lap up the attention (and maybe a few crumbs from your plate).

6. Get them a pup cup.

A “pup cup” is a fancy name for a special drink designed especially for pets, but usually a small cup of whipped cream. Many coffee shops offer these tasty treats, so you can both enjoy a little pick-me-up on your walk.

7. Give your dog a gift.

Walk your dog straight to the nearest pet shop and let them pick out a new toy to show off at the park. Is the toy box overflowing already? How about a new leash-and-collar combo, a big pack of their favorite treats, or a snazzy new bandanna?

8. Volunteer or donate to a pet charity.

Unfortunately, many dogs won’t get to celebrate National Walk Your Dog Day. Consider spending some of your time on February 22 volunteering at or donating to a pet charity. This can be anything from walking dogs at an animal shelter, participating in a fundraiser, or simply making a monetary donation.

9. End the day with snuggles.

Walking with your dog is fun and all, but it sure is tiring. What better way to wrap up National Walk Your Dog Day than with a long snuggle session with your favorite bud?

10. Post your favorite photos to social media.

Don’t forget to raise awareness of this important holiday! Snap a few pics of you and your pup enjoying the day, and share them online with the hashtag #NationalWalkYourDogDay. You never know who might be inspired to join in the celebration!

Safety Tips for Walking Your Dog

Holiday or not, it’s important to keep your dog safe when out and about.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
  • Make sure your pup is wearing a collar tag with your current contact information.
  • Check the fit of their collar. It should be snug enough that you can fit two fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck, but not too tight.
  • If you have a small breed, you may want to switch to a harness for your walks. This will help prevent injury that can be caused by pulling on their neck.
  • Don’t forget your poop bags and pick up after your pup.
  • Check the weather before you go out. February 22 is generally mild, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared for cold rain or sudden snowfall.
  • Always keep your pup on a leash, and only walk in areas that allow dogs.
  • Bring a water bottle and a bowl for your pup.
  • After the walk, take time to check your dog’s paws for any signs of injury.

Most importantly, enjoy the walk. Every minute with you feels like a holiday to your beloved pup!
