Nom Nom is a subscription-based dog food service that was started in 2014 with the purpose of creating nutritious, fresh food for dogs. With the help of Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionists as well as PhDs, they have been able to achieve their goal by creating dog food out of high-quality proteins and vegetables that come from U.S. growers and suppliers.

The founders of Nom Nom are very knowledgeable, with over 170 pets between them. They’ve shipped over 3,000,000 boxes of fresh food since the company was founded and that includes food for both dogs and cats. Nom Nom also partners with animal shelters and rescues to help dogs and cats find their forever homes and provides resources to dog and cat owners on their website.

Up until recently, Nom Nom has been a company in and of itself. But in January of 2022, they were acquired by a parent company, Mars Inc., as part of their Royal Canin Pet Food division. But the founders of Nom Nom still plan to exert full control over the company and continue their research to expand their company and products.

    Brief History of Ollie

Ollie is also a subscription-based dog food company that was founded in 2016 with the mission of creating high-quality dog food with fresh ingredients made in professional kitchens. Their nutritious recipes are based on the advice of pet health authorities to ensure that all ingredients are all-natural, safe, and healthy for your dog. The food also abides by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) standards and contains no fillers or artificial flavors.

The ingredients are sourced from farms in the U.S. and the lamb in the recipes is sourced from Australia. Ollie also donates 1% of their company revenue in dog food to dog rescue organizations and provides wellness guides and resources to dog owners on their website.

Ollie remains its own company with headquarters in New York City. In addition to focusing on the wellness of dogs, the goals of the company also include environmental wellness through responsible sourcing and sustainability initiatives to help ensure a better planet.

    Nom Nom Manufacturing

Nom Nom dog food is made in kitchens in San Francisco, California and Nashville, Tennessee that only make Nom Nom dog food. The ingredients used come from growers and suppliers in the United States and are sustainably sourced to ensure that the highest-quality ingredients are used and that zero food is wasted during the manufacturing process.

The ingredients used in the dog food are also cooked separately without the use of high-temperature vats or extrusion processes. This helps to ensure that the nutrients remain in the food instead of being cooked out. After cooking, the ingredients are mixed together in small batches and the food pre-portioned so that you don’t have to measure out food for your dog.

The food is also packaged and shipped at in-house facilities instead of outsourcing the work to other companies. This helps to ensure that orders are accurate before being shipped to your home in packaging that is 100% recyclable.

    Ollie Manufacturing

Ollie’s website doesn’t specify where exactly their product is made, but it does say that they are made in a human-grade kitchen under the guidance of a board-certified veterinary nutritionist. They also use human-grade ingredients sourced from growers and suppliers in the U.S., other than their lamb meat which comes from farms in Australia.

The recipes and food are created according to the AAFCO standards. The food is gently cooked in small batches at low temperatures by their own employees in order to ensure the highest quality of food for your dog. The food is also pre-portioned and packaged by hand based on your dog’s individual needs.

    Nom Nom’s Product Line

Nom Nom dog food is created under the advisement of two U.S. Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionists. They use nutrient levels established by the AAFCO Food Nutrient Profiles to ensure that your dog is getting the nutrients that he or she needs.

They have four different recipes that they offer: Beef, Chicken, Turkey, and Pork. Each recipe combines one main protein source with vegetable ingredients that provide both flavor and nutritional value to the dog food.

The recipes are healthy and low in calories and fat as well. Because the food is wet food, it is also full of moisture and easily digestible for your dog. If you can’t decide on just one flavor, or if your dog likes a variety, you can choose a variety pack as well. In addition to dog food, Nom Nom also offers dog treats and cat food as well.

    Ollie’s Product Line

Ollie beef dish with sweet potatoes fresh dog food in scoop with white fluffy dog

Ollie dog food is a bit of a newer company, so they don’t offer quite as many products as Nom Nom does. For example, Nom Nom offers dog treats as well as food for cats, while Ollie only offers dog food. However, they do include free gifts with your starter box, including a scoop to serve the food to your dog and a container to store it in.

As far as their actual recipes, they have four as well: Beef, Chicken, Turkey, and Pork. Each of the main protein ingredients is combined with vegetable ingredients to create a flavor that complements and supplements the protein in the food.

All recipes are healthy and low in calories and the portions you receive are appropriate for the size of your dog. They don’t seem to offer a variety pack so that your dog can try all the flavors to see which ones he likes best, but you are able to customize and change your subscription if your dog doesn’t seem to like a particular flavor.

    Nom Nom vs Ollie: Price

Nom Nom and Ollie both operate off of a subscription and delivery service that you can cater and customize to your needs. With both companies, you can start off with a two-week trial at a discounted rate in order to find out which products work for you before committing to regular deliveries.

    Nom Nom

When you order Nom Nom dog food, you’re charged a flat rate every four weeks, plus the cost of shipping no matter which dog food you choose. You’ll pay that fee for each dog you have listed in your account. With the two-week trial, you get a choice of two flavors at 50% off the flat-rate price plus free shipping.

However, the exact price you pay for your dog’s food will depend on factors such as your dog’s age, weight, activity level, and any special dietary needs. If you have a larger dog that consumes more food, you can expect to pay more than someone that has a smaller dog.

Ollie charges a flat rate per dog, every eight weeks unless you otherwise indicate more or less frequent deliveries in your subscription. You’ll also pay the cost of shipping for each delivery. Just like Nom Nom, Ollie offers a free two-week trial in which you get to try any two dog food recipes for 20% off the purchase price, plus free shipping and two free gifts.

Again, the exact price you’ll pay just depends on your answers to the “Get to Know Your Dog” quiz about your dog’s weight, age, activity level, and any food allergies or sensitivities. But in general, the price of Ollie’s food is slightly more expensive than Nom Nom.

Nom Nom vs Ollie: Refund Policy

    Nom Nom

Because Nom Nom sells fresh dog food that is perishable, they do not accept returns on their food. However, their policy states that if you aren’t satisfied or don’t see any benefits of providing your dog with fresh food within 30 days of receiving your first order, you can request a full refund on that order as long as you reach out within that 30-day period.

Outside of that 30-day window, you will have to call or email Nom Nom in order to cancel your subscription, whether that is due to non-satisfaction or another reason. However, you may not receive a refund on any orders after the first one.

Ollie offers a 100% money-back guarantee on your starter box of dog food, but it doesn’t specify how long you have to request your money back. However, they do specify that they do not offer refunds on any subsequent deliveries after your starter box, so you’ll be automatically charged in full if you do not cancel your subscription before your next delivery.

You can make changes to your subscription through your account on their website. But if you wish to cancel your subscription, you will need to contact them by phone or email. Any unused dog food will not need to be returned even if you do cancel your subscription.

Nom Nom vs Ollie: Customer Service

Since both of these dog foods are subscription-based, most of what a customer would need to contact customer service for is questions about their subscription, especially to cancel. Even changes to your subscription can be done through your account on each company’s website. But, we’ll provide some basic information about the customer service options for both of these companies.

    Nom Nom

Nom Nom prides itself on its customer service because the company answers its own phones instead of outsourcing calls to a third party. Their website also offers a FAQ section as well as an online chat feature to help you find answers to your questions before reaching out to them directly.

Nom Nom’s representatives answer calls and online chats 7 days a week during specified hours. Most customers rave about the customer service representatives being responsive, helpful, and knowledgeable in answering their questions.

Ollie’s website has a FAQ section that is broken down into separate categories than what Nom Nom has. They seem to answer more questions on their website than what Nom Nom does, but they don’t have an online chat feature in which you can get quick answers to your questions from a representative.

They do provide customer service and support 7 days a week through email and by phone, and they have longer business hours in which they offer support to customers. Reviewers also say that Ollie’s representatives are very helpful and have a quick response time as well.

    Overall Brand Reputation

    Edge: Nom Nom

If you’re looking for the most affordable brand of fresh dog food between these two, Nom Nom has a slight edge as their subscription is a bit cheaper and they offer a larger discount on their two-week trial. Nom Nom is a good option especially if you have multiple dogs. Although Ollie’s subscription costs a bit more, they do offer two free gifts with their two-week trial that make it easier to serve and store your fresh dog food.

    Quality of Ingredients

    Edge: Ollie

Although both brands don’t contain fillers and artificial flavors, Ollie’s dog food recipes tend to have more fruit and vegetable ingredients in them. Plus, Ollie mentions the benefits of their main ingredients under the description of each recipe. Their recipes are also higher in protein on average, which is essential for helping your dog maintain lean muscles. The advantage that Nom Nom has is that they specifically mention how many calories are in each cup of dog food, which is important for dogs that need to maintain a certain weight.

    Refund Policy

    Edge: Neither

Nom Nom and Ollie have a similar money-back guarantee policy, offering refunds only on your starter box. Neither policy is necessarily better. However, if you want to judge your decision based on how forthcoming the two companies are with information about their refund policy, then Nom Nom is the winner due to having more information about their refund policy available on their website.

    Customer Service

    Edge: Nom Nom

Nom Nom and Ollie both have a reputation for providing good and quick customer service. They also both have very detailed FAQ sections on their website as well as provide customer service 7 days a week through both phone and email. Although Ollie has longer business hours during which they provide service, we have to give the edge to Nom Nom due to having an online chat feature to talk with a representative.

    Divider 2

Both of these brands are pretty comparable and neither one has a definite edge over the other. If you’re looking for dog food that contains the best ingredients, then we have to say that Ollie is better. However, Nom Nom is slightly more affordable and the dog food is still very high-quality, plus their website is more user-friendly. Now that Nom Nom has a new parent company, it will be interesting to see if and how the company changes, but for now, the better company is really just a matter of personal preference and what you’re looking for budget-wise.
