  • The 10 Best Pet Insurance Providers in New Mexico

    1. Embrace Pet Insurance – Best Overall

    embrace pet insurance

Embrace is rated number one in the Forbes list of America’s Best Insurance Companies 2022 and is a seasoned, well-rounded insurance provider.  With an average New Mexico monthly premium of $40 for dogs, Embrace covers a broad range of treatments under their base policy, including up to $1,000 in dental care, behavioral conditions, and even complementary therapies such as acupuncture.

Embrace also uncommonly covers preventable illnesses such as parvovirus, a gastrointestinal disease that causes blood in the stool (which can be life-threatening, especially for puppies) in their plan, which is a rarity in pet insurance.

What brings Embrace to the top of our charts is its range of optional add-ons and discounts, including the Healthy Pet deductible discount, which provides a $50 per year reduction in your pet’s annual deductible if no claims are made. Embrace Wellness Rewards is an add-on that acts as a separate money pot to your insurance plan that sets money aside to use on general expenses for your pet, with a $250, $450, or $650 plan available.

    Pros
    • Broad Coverage
    • Deductible reductions for zero claims
    • “Paperless” – No forms claims
    • Only a two-day wait period for accidents
    • Optional wellness plans available
    Cons
    • More pricey
    • Doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions
    • Only covers cats and dogs
    • Elderly pets (15+ years) can only enroll in the accident-only plan
    • Orthopedic coverage has a six-month wait period

    2. Lemonade Pet Insurance

    lemonade pet insurance

Lemonade is the new kid on the block regarding pet insurance. It offers a fresh take on coverage for your pet, a user-friendly website and app, and very reasonable prices for coverage (some of the cheapest on this list).

Lemonade has perfectly flexible plans for any pet owner, with an annual claim limit to choose between $5,000–$100,000 and options for puppy/kitten plans.

On the other hand, the base plan is quite basic and only covers accidents or illnesses up to a certain point. Procedures such as dental, physiotherapy, and hydrotherapy are all optional extras, and Lemonade won’t cover your pet without a complete vet examination within 12 months prior to taking out the policy.

Lemonade has a highly rated app that’s used to process claims and tries to process claims before a customer leaves the vet’s office—a bold claim that’s mostly upheld. Paired with their cheap prices (the average for a dog being $37 a month), Lemonade is a good choice for those that want basic, affordable coverage.

    Pros
    • Cheap base plan
    • Fast claim reimbursement
    • Can use any vet in the US
    • Highly rated app used to process claims
    Cons
    • In-depth exam needed before covering
    • Doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions
    • Some paid add-ons are considered basic in other plans
    • Has a 6-month orthopedic waiting period

    3. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

    healthy paws logo

Healthy Paws is a well-known insurance provider in New Mexico, with some stellar reviews. It will cover pets from 8 weeks to 14 years and everything in between, with claims typically being processed within two business days.

There are no caps for the policy either, and your pet is covered for an unlimited amount and with no lifetime or per incident caps. However, the plan has some drawbacks, including the lack of exam fee coverage.

Healthy Pets claims this is due to ensuring lower prices, but most other plans include exams in their basic policies. Older animals may get a poorer deal  (dogs over 8 years have a $750-$1,000 deductible for 50-60% coverage), but the plan for younger pets is exemplary.

    Pros
    • No price caps
    • Claims processed quickly
    • Potential pre-authorization for expensive treatments
    • Straightforward claims process via their app
    Cons
    • Limited coverage for older pets
    • Exam fee not included
    • No coverage for hip dysplasia for younger pets
    • $25 admin fee at sign up

    4. Figo

    FIGO Pet Insurance

Figo boasts the top spot for the best reimbursement rates and the most accessible app to use in this year, and the good points don’t stop there. Figo will cover pre-existing conditions if your pet has been symptom-free for 12 months or more, which is a huge selling point.

They also have a Live Vet service, which offers 24/7 veterinary advice for plan owners worried about their pets. Claims take on average 3 days to process, with basic plans covering accident and illness up to $5,000, $10,000, and unlimited.

They also offer “Power Ups,” extra packages for policy add-ons such as the Extra Care Powerup, which provide vacation cancellation costs, advertisements, rewards if your pet is lost, and boarding fees. The plan won’t cover pre-existing conditions that are symptomatic or experimental treatments.

    Pros
    • Live vet service 24/7
    • “Power-up” additional coverage
    • 100% coverage options
    • Symptom-free pre-existing condition cover (symptom-free for 12 months)
    Cons
    • Won’t cover certain pre-existing conditions
    • $2 transaction fee
    • Won’t cover experimental treatments

    5. ASPCA

    ASPCA Pet Health Insurance

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (the ASPCA) pet insurance is a solid choice for those wanting no-nonsense coverage for their beloved pet. ASPCA offers up to 100% coverage on claims for pet owners with no age limit and provides coverage for prescription foods and behavioral therapies.

ASPCA has a standard Complete Coverage plan that covers accident and illness, injury, and unexpected veterinary visits (including examinations), with the option to add a preventative wellness plan that covers things like vaccinations.

The ASPCA also pays for microchipping in the standard plan, which is a real outlier in the insurance world. Coverage amounts start from $3,000 at the smallest plan right up to unlimited, so options are flexible, and they can pay directly to your vet if needed.

Weight Loss food is not covered, nor are pre-existing conditions. Only dogs and cats are covered under this provider; exotic pets like rabbits, rodents, or lizards are not covered.

    Pros
    • Vet direct pay
    • Standard plan covers microchipping
    • Standard plan covers prescription food and behavioral therapies
    • 270 days to claim
    • Covers ‘curable’ pre-existing conditions
    • No upper age limit
    Cons
    • Weight Loss food not covered
    • Not all pets are eligible for coverage
    • Won’t cover vacation cancellation costs

    6. Nationwide

    Nationwide Pet Insurance

Nationwide is a well-known pet insurance provider with a good selection of choices to personalize your pet’s care. While the basic plan is more expensive than some, it provides decent coverage, with the average price for a medium-sized dog in New Mexico being $51.37.

Nationwide also has coverage for exotic species and birds, which is unusual for most providers, and every plan has a 90% reimbursement rate. They also offer a 24/7 vet advice line at every plan level and cover holistic and alternative therapies as standard.

Certain genetic conditions aren’t covered under the basic Major Medical plan, and other exclusions are more extensive than other providers we cover in this list. The Whole Pet coverage plan is an improvement, with food, cesarean section, and blood work being covered, but it is pricier at $69.37.

    Pros
    • Covers exotic pets and birds
    • 24/7 vet helpline
    • Holistic therapies covered
    • Cesarean section covered under Whole Pet plan
    Cons
    • Restricted coverage on basic plan
    • 10-year age limit
    • More expensive
    • 12-month wait time for cruciate ligament injuries

    7. Pumpkin Pet Insurance

    Pumpkin Pet Insurance_Logo

Pumpkin pet insurance is a great contender for pet owners in New Mexico, with flexible coverage as standard and an average cost for good benefits. The average cost for a medium-sized dog in New Mexico is $67.51, but this gets you supplements, vitamins, alternative therapies, and food covered under the basic plan.

There is a 14-day wait period for accidents and illness, which again comes in around average for the area, and Pumpkin has a 10% discount on multi-pet plans. The deductibles are flexible, with $100, $250, and $500 available and an annual coverage limit of $10,000, $20,000, and unlimited, respectively.

A big plus is that both behavioral problems and a microchip are covered under the basic plan, and an add-on plan, Preventative Essentials, is available for those pet parents who want to include vaccinations and flea and tick treatments. However, your pet’s age, breed, and location will factor into the cost, so make sure to get a personalized price if interested.

    Pros
    • Supplements, vitamins, and food covered
    • Microchip covered
    • 10% multi-pet discount
    • Flexible deductible
    Cons
    • More expensive end of average price
    • Excludes dental care
    • Won’t cover training costs
    • Age, breed, and location factor into prices

    8. AKC

    akc-pet-insurance

The American Kennel Club is a famous doggie-loving registry of breed excellence, and they have exclusively used the AKC insurance for members for years. They offer reasonable prices for inclusive plans and provide in-app claims.

AKC insurance provides a vet helpline for worried pet parents to contact 24/7 and a prescription discount system to save you money on your pet’s medications. They also have three plans that are fundamentally different: two that are fixed and one that is very flexible, improved by add-on packages.

The base accident and illness plan provides coverage for the routine veterinary visit, including diagnostics, medications, and physical therapy (including hydrotherapy); however, it is limited to basic coverage. The base plan has a $100 deductible, with 20% coinsurance, a $500 incident limit, and unlimited annual coverage, which comes in at $54.05. However, they have an age limit and recommend the basic accident care for older pets.

Hereditary and congenital conditions are not covered under the basic plan . There’s a 180-day cruciate ligament waiting period and a $3 per month service fee. Still, the Companion Care custom plan provides flexible coverage in the form of add-ons that cover most of what you would need, including the Exam Plus, Hereditary Plus, and Support Plus (memorial) plans. Companion care also has no per incident limit and includes behavioral problems.

    Pros
    • 24/7 vet helpline
    • Prescription discount system
    • Physical therapy offered in base plan
    • Fair pricing
    • Pre-existing conditions covered if no symptoms for 365 days
    Cons
    • Limited coverage on standard plan
    • Exam coverage is a paid extra
    • Age limit on plans other than Accident Care
    • Hereditary and congenital conditions not covered in base plan

    9. Bivvy

    Bivvy Pet Insurance

Bivvy is a solid choice for pet owners wanting fair and adequate coverage for their pets without the provider having to consider their pet’s species, age, breed, or location. Bivvy offers a flat rate of $14 per month for any pets under their policy, with 50% coinsurance, and they cover exotic pets.

This does come with limitations, however. Because they’re so cheap, your pet’s annual limit is $2,000 with a lifetime limit of only $25,000. There is a 14-day accident waiting period, a 30-day illness period, and a 12-month orthopedic waiting period. While coverage is good with diagnostic, hereditary, and accident & illness coverage coming as standard, there are some further restrictions to consider. For example, Bivvy won’t cover more than one episode of foreign body removal per insurance period.

    Pros
    • Very reasonably priced
    • Good coverage for the price
    • Covers exotics
    • One flat rate for any species at any age
    Cons
    • More restrictions than some
    • Low annual and lifetime limits
    • Longer waiting periods
    • Food not covered

    10. Geico

    GEICO Pet Insurance

Geico is only for cats and dogs but provides excellent levels of coverage for a slightly higher price. They offer 90% reimbursement as a recommendation for all plans, with an annual limit of $15,000 and a deductible of $750.

The annual limit is flexible,  between $5,000–$30,000, and Geico has deductibles ranging from $200–$1,000 to personalize your pet’s coverage. A 10% multi-pet discount also sweetens the deal, but no pets older than 14 can enroll in any plans except the accident-only plan.

Geico has a wellness plan add-on to customize your pet’s plan further, offering microchip, grooming, and even chiropractic care for an extra $18.75 per month. Embrace underwrites Geico pet insurance.

    Pros
    • Flexible care
    • 10% multi-pet discount
    • Alternative therapies offered
    • Physical therapy covered in base plan
    Cons
    • Upper age limit of 14 on base plan
    • Only dogs and cats covered
    • Does not cover pre-existing conditions

Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Right Pet Insurance Provider in New Mexico

What to Look for in Pet Insurance in New Mexico

Knowing the best way to protect your pet can seem like a minefield. Comparison of providers that cover the following key points is the basis of our ranking.

    Policy Coverage

Embrace policies covered the widest scope of problems, illnesses, and other treatments such as diagnostics and exam fees of all the companies reviewed. This is also from a practical standpoint, as some of the other providers had hidden restrictions regarding coverage, whether age-related or condition-exclusionary.

Embrace doesn’t have an age limit, but the full scope plan is only available for dogs and cats 14 years old and younger. For dogs, this will cover pretty much all of them, but for some cats (who now routinely live into their late teens or even twenties), it may not be as good of a choice.

Embrace’s policies are customizable and flexible, with added wellness plans, and the price we found was highly competitive, particularly for the amount of coverage provided.

    Customer Service & Reputation

When looking at pet insurance reviews, most low-ranked reviews come from people who unfortunately have to deal with a sick pet with a pre-existing condition.

Good points to look out for in reviews are how friendly the customer service team is, how easy it is to place a claim, and how quickly disputes are resolved. For Embrace, the glowing reviews of this year stated how useful the vanishing deductible is  (for pets who don’t have a claim put in) and the swiftness of payouts.

Being able to rely on your insurance provider when you need them is paramount to anxious pet owners, which is why the provider’s reputation is so important, and why Embrace shines.

    Claim Repayment

Claim repayment is arguably the most important part of pet insurance claims (other than your pet getting better, of course). While the ease of repayments may cross over into reputation, if an insurance company were renowned for taking the money and running, we wouldn’t have included it on our list anyway.

Some providers can take longer than others, and Embrace has certain situations where this may be the case (looking through your pet’s medical history, for example), but generally, claims were dealt with very swiftly, with 2–3 days being the average.

Some providers can pay the vet directly, but at this time, Embrace doesn’t offer this service.

    Price Of Policy

Price is always a bone of contention for pet owners since most of us want the best care available for our furry friends, but at the correct price. Some pet insurance providers offer very cheap policies. However, they may be “too good to be true” as they often only cover basic conditions and may not cover routine costs (such as exam costs).

Embrace has such a wide array of coverage for the price (which came in at around average for both cats and dogs in New Mexico) that we feel paying slightly more for a massive leap in coverage is more than worth it.

    Plan Customization

When ranking our providers, flexibility and customization were taken into account, but they weren’t considered as vital as the coverage and claims process. As long as plans can be tuned to as close to your liking as possible, they should be able to offer some options. Embrace has customizable options for deductibles, annual limits, reimbursement rates, and wellness plans.

    hepper cat paw dividerFAQ

Do I Have To Go To A Specified Vet?

No, with most pet insurance providers (including Embrace), you don’t have to go to a specific veterinary office. That is because, unlike the American healthcare system, there are no networks to conform to, and once you pay the vet, the insurance will then pay you.

What If My Insurance Company Is Not Listed In Your Reviews?

If you use a company we haven’t recommended, but you think it’s excellent, there’s no reason to change!  However, you can investigate other insurers from our list if you’ve had issues with your insurer. All the companies listed in this review are available to people and their pets in New Mexico.
