The 10 Expert Tips for Grooming a Portuguese Water Dog

1. Start Early

It is best to start grooming your Portuguese Water Dog when they are still a puppy. Introducing them to brushing, bathing, and nail trimming at this age will make it easier for them to tolerate these tasks when they get older. So, be consistent, and just groom your puppy every few days for short periods at first, increasing the time spent as the puppy gets used to it.

2. Brush Regularly

Portuguese Water Dogs have thick, curly fur that requires regular brushing to prevent matting and tangling. Use a slicker or pin brush to remove loose hair and prevent tangles. Work from the head down, brushing with the fur for best results. Be gentle when brushing around sensitive areas, such as the ears and tail, so you don’t startle or scare your dog, making them less likely to want to continue.

3. Bathe as Needed

Portuguese Water Dogs are known for their love of water, but you should not bathe them too often, as it can strip their coat of natural oils. The coat can become dull without these oils, and the skin might itch. Only bathe your pet if they get into mud or something else that makes it necessary, and always use a pet-safe shampoo. Choose a brand with detangling ingredients for a better experience.

4. Trim Nails Regularly

Besides brushing and keeping the coat of your Portuguese Water Dog clean, you will also need to trim their nails regularly as part of the grooming process. Long nails can cause discomfort when the dog walks and might even lead to joint problems. Use a pair of dog nail clippers, being careful not to cut the blood vessels inside the nail. If you take your dog to a professional groomer, they often include nail trimming for a fee. They might also be able to show you how to do it yourself.

5. Pay Attention to the Ears

Portuguese Water Dogs are prone to ear infections due to their floppy ears, so paying attention to them when grooming is essential. Clean their ears regularly while checking for signs of redness, swelling, odor, or discharge, indicating that an infection is present. Use a dog-specific ear cleaner and a cotton ball or soft cloth to clean your dog’s ears, avoiding using cotton swabs or anything that could damage their delicate ear canal.

6. Use the Right Tools

Investing in high-quality tools can make the grooming process easier. Always look at several brands, and read the reviews if possible to see what other people say about a product before purchasing it. If you are unsure which tools to use, ask your veterinarian or a professional groomer for recommendations. They can help you find the right items for your dog’s needs.

7. Practice Good Dental Care

Dental care is essential to Portuguese Water Dog grooming, as some experts 1 state that dental disease affects more than 80% of dogs in the United States. Since there are few visible signs, it’s up to the dog’s family and veterinarian to uncover this hidden and often painful condition, which means frequent veterinary checkups. Regular brushing can help prevent tooth decay, bad breath, and gum disease. Use a dog-specific toothbrush and toothpaste to brush your pup’s teeth at least once a week. Human toothpaste can contain xylitol 2 and other ingredients that can be harmful to your pet’s health.

If your dog is resistant to tooth brushing, gradually introduce them to the toothbrush and toothpaste. Use positive reinforcement, such as treats or praise, to help make the experience more enjoyable.

8. Trim Hair Around Eyes

Portuguese Water Dogs have thick hair around their eyes that can become long and obstruct their vision. Use ordinary scissors or dog-specific trimming shears to trim this hair, but be careful not to get too close to their eyes.

9. Stay Consistent

Consistency is essential when it comes to Portuguese Water Dog grooming. Regular brushing, bathing, nail trimming, and ear cleaning will help keep your pup healthy and comfortable, so stick to a grooming schedule that works for you and your dog. This will help your pet get into a routine that they can look forward to and follow throughout their lives.

Professional groomers have experience and specialized tools that make these tasks easier and more efficient. If you are considering professional grooming, research and choose a reputable groomer with experience with Portuguese Water Dogs.
