The Earliest Records of the Sable Cockapoo in History

The Cockapoo is a deliberate mix between two established breeds: the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle. Both parent breeds have been around for centuries, with Cocker Spaniels officially recognized in England in the 19th century. Poodles were developed in Germany over 400 years ago and further refined in France.

Cockapoos originate from America, with the first puppies born in the 1950s. No single person is credited with first breeding the Cockapoo; it may have been an accident. We also don’t know precisely when the sable Cockapoos were first bred, but it could have been as early as the first litter.

How the Sable Cockapoo Gained Popularity

When dog lovers realized that the Cockapoo was not only adorable and smart but also low shedding, the breed began to gain popularity. Because of this, breeders began deliberately crossing Poodles and Cocker Spaniels, seeking to minimize the health concerns present in the two parent breeds while recreating the winning personality and allergy-friendly coat of the first Cockapoos.

Cockapoos continued to gain in popularity over the following decades, eventually becoming well-known outside of America. All designer dogs, including Cockapoos, experienced a surge in popularity during the early 21st century, which continues to this day. Sable Cockapoos are just one of the many colors and patterns available.

Formal Recognition of the Sable Cockapoo

Because they are technically mixed breed dogs, sable Cockapoos are not formally recognized by the American Kennel Club or similar organizations in other countries.  An unofficial American Cockapoo Club maintains a breeder registry and upholds ethical standards for members.

They are working to establish a breed standard and eventually push for formal recognition. Without some of the safeguards of official standards, designer dogs like the Cockapoo are often easily exploited by puppy mills and other irresponsible breeders. This is especially true in recent years as the popularity of these “hypoallergenic” dogs has exploded. Using a breeder registered with the American Cockapoo Club provides some reassurance for future sable Cockapoo owners.

3 Unique Facts About the Sable Cockapoo

1. They Get Lighter Over Time

Sable Cockapoo puppies are usually born dark brown or black. As they age, the coat color tends to lighten, with points like the face and ears staying darker. According to the American Cockapoo Club standard, sable Cockapoos can be a mix of gold, silver, red, brown, or tan.

2. They’re Not Always Called Cockapoos

Like many designer dogs, Cockapoos are known by more than one name. You’ll sometimes see them called Spoodles, which is a different combination of the words “Spaniel” and “Poodle.” Cockapoo is by far the most common variation of the breed’s name and likely the one you’ll see if you’re looking for a puppy for sale.

3. They Have Hunting Dog Heritage

Cockapoos are usually found as pets and companion dogs, but their breed ancestry is much more working class. Cocker Spaniels were originally bred as hunters and helped flush small game birds called woodcocks out for their human companions. Many people are surprised to learn that Poodles were originally bred as water retrievers, just like Labradors. This combination of breeds is part of what makes Cockapoos intelligent, active, and eager to please.

Does the Sable Cockapoo Make a Good Pet?

Sable Cockapoos make excellent pets for a wide range of families and living situations. Their relatively small size allows them to live in apartments or dense city settings. At the same time, they have enough energy to serve as playmates for kids and enjoy a good romp in the backyard.

This is not a breed that enjoys being left alone, and Cockapoo owners should be aware of this before bringing one home. They generally get along with other pets and people, although socialization is essential, as with any dog.

Cockapoos are typically responsive and easily trained. They are intelligent and love to please their owners, especially if they get attention and food rewards. Although Cockapoos are usually not a heavy shedding breed, it’s not true that they are “hypoallergenic.” No dog is truly hypoallergenic, although Cockapoos are among the dogs that allergy sufferers often tolerate more easily.

Final Thoughts

Although you should never pick a dog based on their coat color, sable Cockapoos are truly eye-catching. Just do not expect your sable puppy to stay the same shade for their entire life! Cockapoos are one of the most popular designer dogs for a reason and will be a good match for many potential households. Before bringing one home, make sure you’re prepared to make a lifetime commitment to your new pet. Sable Cockapoos routinely live 12–15 years and often even longer, and they are not a responsibility to take lightly.
