Interesting Facts About the Scottish Fold
1. Their Ears are the Result of a Genetic Mutation
The ears of a Scottish Fold are the result of a genetic mutation that directly affects the development of cartilage. This inheritable disorder is known as osteochondrodysplasia and is not only limited to the cartilage in the ears but also affects the development of bone, cartilage, and connective tissue throughout the body. This can lead to issues like chronic pain and arthritis. Since this is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder, it can be passed along by both males and females and only one parent needs to carry the gene for the kittens to potentially be affected.
2. It All Started with a Cat Named Susie
The first Scottish Fold was born in the Tayside Region of Scotland in 1961. She was a pure white barn cat named Susie and she was quickly recognized by her unique downward-folded ears. Susie went on to breed with a tom cat and birthed two kittens that also had these distinct, folded ears. A neighbor and cat fancier of Susie’s owner took one of the kittens and named her Snooks. Ultimately, Snooks had a litter, and one of her sons was bred to a British Shorthair, which ultimately led to the creation of the Scottish Fold breed that we all know and love.
3. Scottish Folds Cannot Be Bred Together
Since the genetic mutation that results in the Scottish Fold’s ears is related to some very serious health complications related to the development of cartilage, bone, and connective tissue, a male and female Scottish Fold are never to be bred together. The result of this kind of pairing could result in some very severe genetic deformities and is highly discouraged.
Since only one parent needs to carry the gene to produce kittens with folded ears, the Scottish Fold is bred with British Shorthairs in Europe and can be bred with either British or American Shorthairs in America. Most often, not all kittens in these litters have folded ears.
4. Their Ears are Straight at Birth
You cannot tell which kittens will be considered a Scottish Fold until they reach about 3 to 4 weeks of age. Scottish Fold kittens are born with straight ears and are indistinguishable from members of the litter that will have normal, upright ears.
5. They Are Not Recognized as a Breed in Europe
The Scottish Fold is recognized by The International Cat Association and The Cat Fanciers Association in the United States of America but is not a recognized cat breed in their homeland of Scotland. The European Cat Fanciers’ Association refuses to recognize the breed because of the genetic mutation that results in their unique ears. This is due to the deformities and potential for severe health problems and physical limitations related to the condition.
6. They Are a Favorite Among Big Name Celebrities
Two of the most famous artists of this day and age have displayed their love for the Scottish Fold breed by showing off their precious kitties. Ed Sheeran has an Instagram dedicated to his cats Calippo, a gorgeous orange and white Scottish Fold, and Dorito, an adorable orange tabby. Taylor Swift has two Scottish Folds, Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson. She’s had Meredith since 2011 and Olivia since 2014. She also welcomed a Ragdoll, Benjamin Button into the family in 2019.
7. A Scottish Fold Name Maru is an Internet Star
One of the most watched animals on the internet is a male Scottish Fold named Maru. Maru is a YouTube sensation from Japan that was born in 2007 and has been active online since 2008. Maru once held the Guinness Book of World Records for most YouTube video views of an individual animal. Is he responsible for the internet’s crazy love of cat videos? We like to think so.
Tips for Choosing the Right Name
Sometimes you just need a little inspiration or extra encouragement to find that perfect name. No worries, we have you covered. If you’ve found yourself in a naming pickle, here are some extra tips that may help you come to your final decision:
Give It Meaning
You are going to share many, loving years with your new cat, so you want to give them a name that holds some sort of meaning to you. Whether it’s something brand new and you love the meaning of that name, or you name them after something that has personal meaning to you or your family, this is a way to make the naming process extra special.
Consider Their Personality
Scottish Folds are known for being very friendly, social, and affectionate but they are sometimes a little shy or even neurotic. Each cat is like a snowflake; there are no two alike. Since you have a unique individual on your hands, consider their personality when choosing their name.
Think of Your Favorite Characters in Books, TV, and Movies
A lot of people turn to their favorite characters to get a little name inspiration. Whether you are a bookworm, a movie fanatic, or you love binge-watching your favorite TV series there are plenty of names you can sift through to see if any fit your precious new family member.
Get Some Help
There’s nothing wrong with asking others for a little help in the process. You can brainstorm ideas together to help come up with the best top contenders. If your Scottish Fold is a family pet, try involving the whole household in the naming process.
Shorter Names Will Be Easier for the Cat to Remember
There’s no harm in a long name, but cats will have a much easier time picking up on and remembering their name if it’s only one or two syllables. If you are set on a longer name, try and think up some suitable ideas for a shorter nickname you can have on the back burner if they have trouble remembering it.
Final Thoughts
The Scottish Fold is a unique and adorable cat breed that resulted from a genetic mutation first discovered in Scotland in the 1960s. Since then, the breed has developed into one of the most popular cat breeds across the country. If you get the pleasure of adding one of these precious felines to your family, we hope our list can help you in the hunt for the perfect name. Regardless, your life is about to be full of love, snuggles, and purrs.
