Victor Dog Food vs Purina Pro Plan: 2024 Comparison

Kristin Hitchcock

By Kristin Hitchcock

Victor vs Purina Pro Plan

Purina Pro Plan is easily one of the most popular pet foods in the world. However, Victor dog food is slowly becoming more popular and is often considered to be a premium dog food choice. Still, because of this premium label and its heavy use of meat ingredients, this food also tends to be more expensive.

Neither of these dog foods is necessarily better than the other all the time. It will depend on what you’re looking for and what your dog needs.

With that said, one of these foods did stand out to us as working for most people in more situations.

  • We love Purina Pro Plan because it is backed by science and utilizes quality ingredients. However, it also remains affordable. This brand does not give into some of the fads that circulate in the dog food industry. Instead, they are one of the few brands that actually hire veterinary nutritionists to formulate their recipes.

Plus, they have tons of different recipes that are suitable for a variety of different dogs. It is quite easy to find a recipe that fits your canine’s needs.

    About Purina Pro Plan

Purina Pro Plan has been around for a very long time and serves tons of customers. Here are some of the reasons they’re so popular:

    Recalls

Purina Pro Plan does not have any recalls. However, the company has had recalls on other lines of dog food. However, considering their long history and the massive number of recipes, this is to be expected. When they do have a recall, the company acts quickly and professionally.

    Formulas Available

This brand includes tons of different recipes. You can find a formulation for just about any canine. They have regular formulas with tons of different ingredients, as well as specialty formulations.

For instance, they have a Weight Management formula that may help your dog lose weight. They also have a Sports formula, which provides extra calories and protein for very active dogs. They even have a formula for sensitive digestion and skin problems.

    Ingredients

Most Purina Pro Plan formulas feature very similar ingredients. For instance, their formulas usually include a source of animal protein, brewer’s rice, and organ meats. The source of protein does vary depending on the recipe. Chicken is often the most popular protein choice, likely because it is the cheapest. However, you can also find beef, chicken, lamb, salmon, and turkey.

Most Purina Pro Plan formulas are grain-inclusive and free from peas. Because peas may be linked to certain health conditions, we don’t consider them a great choice for dogs. Furthermore, grain-free foods may be linked to heart conditions in dogs, so we generally recommend choosing a grain-inclusive food for most dogs.

    About Victor Dog Food

Victor is generally considered a premium dog food brand due to their use of quality ingredients. However, this does mean that they are quite expensive. Plus, they may not be suitable for all canines.

    Recall

This brand has never had a recall. They have been around for a while, as well. Therefore, this lack of recalls speaks to the high-quality safety guidelines they follow when making their food. Plus, they must also use premium suppliers, as they have never had a supplier-connected recall, either.

    Formulas Available

This company doesn’t produce as many formulations as Purina. However, you should still be able to find food for just about any dog. They offer a few different protein-source-based recipes for your average adult dog, as well as puppy and senior food.

However, for specialty formulations, you’ll probably need to look elsewhere.

    Ingredients

Victor foods usually include a high number of meat-based proteins, such as chicken, pork, fish, and beef. These animal proteins are farm-raised when possible. Often, meat meals are utilized instead of whole meats, which are basically meat concentrates. Despite some misconceptions, these meat meals are actually better for your dog than whole meats.

Most Victor recipes are grain-inclusive. Usually, these formulas utilize whole grains of some sort, which can support a dog’s digestive health. These whole grains include lots of fiber, after all.

Many owners who decide to purchase Purina Pro Plan often settle on the Purina Pro Plan Adult Sensitive Skin & Stomach Salmon & Rice Formula. This formula is designed specifically for dogs with skin sensitivities and stomach problems. However, it has quality ingredients that should work well for just about any canine out there.

For instance, salmon appears as the first ingredient. This fish is not a common allergen, so even dogs with food allergies should be able to consume this formula. Plus, salmon is high in omega fatty acids, which may improve skin health.

This formula also features whole grains (and some refined ones). These provide fiber and may help regulate your dog’s digestive system—a vital feature for dogs with stomach problems.

    Pros
    • Salmon as the first ingredient
    • Whole grains included
    • High in omega fatty acids
    • Protein primarily from meats

Purina Pro Plan Sport Performance 30 20

If your canine is very active, you may want to get the Purina Pro Plan Sport Performance 30/20. This formula includes concentrated ingredients to improve a dog’s VO2 MAX, which describes how quickly a dog can metabolize oxygen. It also includes real salmon as the first ingredient, which provides much-needed fats and protein.

The company includes probiotics in this food to support digestion and immune health. Dogs with digestion problems would most benefit from these probiotics, but they can be helpful for just about any dog out there.

This formula also includes heightened levels of amino acids, which support muscle growth and maintenance. Therefore, for dogs that are on the go, this formula provides them with what they need to thrive.

    3. Purina Pro Plan High Protein Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula

Purina Pro Plan High Protein Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula

For the average adult dog out there, the Purina Pro Plan High Protein Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula is probably the one you need. This formula utilizes chicken as the first ingredient, which provides lots of protein. This protein source works well for practically any dog that isn’t allergic to it.

This formula is grain-inclusive. Rice, whole grain wheat, and corn gluten meal are all included. These ingredients are pretty high-quality, for the most part. Rice isn’t particularly nutritious, especially when it is refined.

We love that the company fortified this food with probiotics, which can improve your dog’s digestion. While not all dogs need probiotics, they can be extremely helpful for just about every canine out there.

    Pros
    • Chicken as the first ingredients
    • Grain-inclusive

Top 3 Most Popular Victor Dog Food Recipes

    1. Victor Classic Hi-Pro Plus Formula

    Victor Classic Hi-Pro Plus Formula

Many dog owners are drawn to the Victor Classic Hi-Pro Plus Formula because it is extremely high in protein. If your dog is extremely active or working, then this high protein content can be helpful. However, too high protein can lead to some health problems. Therefore, we don’t necessarily recommend it for all dogs.

If your dog is very active, though, this formula can be a good option. Beef meal appears as the first ingredient, though the formula utilizes a host of other protein sources as well. Menhaden fish meal, pork meal, and chicken meal are all included.

Luckily, this formula is grain-inclusive and utilizes grain sorghum for carbohydrates. Active dogs need carbohydrates as well, as they are an extremely accessible source of energy.

Furthermore, this formula is so nutrient-dense that it works for all life stages, including puppies and lactating females.

    Pros
    • All life stages
    • Lots of meat included
    • Grain-inclusive
    • Designed for active dogs
    Cons
    • Expensive
    • Won’t work for dogs with allergies

    2. Victor Purpose Senior Healthy Weight Dry Dog Food

Victor Purpose Senior Healthy Weight Dry Dog Food

For older dogs that are gaining weight in their later years, we recommend Victor Purpose Senior Healthy Weight Dry Dog Food. As the name suggests, this formula is specifically for older dogs that are having a hard time maintaining a healthy weight.

It includes the quality ingredients you’d expect from this brand, such as beef meal. Beef meal is extremely protein-dense because it is a concentrated form of beef. Therefore, it adds a lot of protein and amino acids to this food.

Whole grain brown rice and millet are both included, too. These grains add lots of fiber, which can help keep your dog full for longer. Plus, they also provide carbohydrates and fiber.

Because it is for older dogs, this formula includes glucosamine and chondroitin. Both of these ingredients help support your dog’s joints, which tend to start deteriorating in old age.

    Pros
    • Low in calories
    • Beef meal as the first ingredient
    • Grain-inclusive
    • Includes glucosamine and chondroitin
    Cons
    • Expensive

    3. Victor Select Beef Meal & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food

Victor Select Beef Meal & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food

Victor Select Beef Meal & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food is one of the brand’s “normal” formulas. Therefore, it should be the default option that most dog owners select. It includes everything most dogs need to thrive, though it isn’t formulated for specific health conditions.

As the title suggests, the very first ingredient in this formula is beef meal. This ingredient contains a lot of protein. In fact, 77% of the protein in this food comes from animal sources.

This formula also utilizes gluten-free grains like grain sorghum and whole grain brown rice. These provide both carbohydrates and fiber that your dog needs to thrive.

    Pros
    • Beef meal as the first ingredient
    • Grain-inclusive
    • Gluten-free
    Cons
    • Doesn’t include many added nutrients (like omega fatty acids or glucosamine)

Recall History of Purina Pro Plan and Victor Dog Food

Neither of these brands has had a recall. Therefore, they both seem to use rather strict safety policies when crafting their foods. Their suppliers are likely very well vetted, as well, since suppliers are often the cause of dog food recalls.

For these reasons, we could recommend both of these brands based on their lack of a recall history alone. It doesn’t matter how good a brand is. If they are recalled often, then they simply aren’t safe.

Purina Pro Plan vs. Victor Dog Food Comparison

    Taste

We have not seen many complaints about the taste of either of these foods. Picky dogs seem to like either option, though every dog is different. The foods are flavored differently. Victor includes yeast in their foods, which may provide a stronger flavor for pickier dogs.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that all dogs will like Victor more.

In the end, we can’t give either of these foods negative reviews about their taste.

    Nutritional Value

Both of these foods are pretty even when it comes to nutrition.

However, Victor does seem to have a higher protein content in more of their formulas. While many dog owners are drawn to high-protein foods, these aren’t generally recommended unless your dog is extremely active.

High-protein foods can cause health problems in dogs that don’t need them. Generally, food must have at least 18% protein. You typically don’t want to move above 25%, though this does vary from dog to dog. There is no hard maximum. Many Victor dog foods are much higher than 25%, though.

    Price

Purina Pro Plan is typically less expensive than Victor.

However, for one reason or another, Purina seems to be particularly affected by supply chain problems. Therefore, their foods may be more expensive in some situations.

Generally, Victor dog food is more expensive, largely because they usually use more meat. Meat is expensive, which drives up the price of their food.

For this reason, if you’re on a budget, you may want to select Purina. However, we do recommend looking at the price tags, as Purina can vary in price.

    Selection

Technically, Purina Pro Plan makes more recipes than Victor. However, both brands make enough recipes to meet the needs of most dogs. Therefore, we really can’t count points off for selection on either brand’s rating.

For most canines, you’ll be able to find something in either of these brands.

    Overall

Overall, Purina is the better food—but just by a hair.

It includes a more appropriate amount of protein and has more science backing it than Victor. However, some Victor formulas are absolutely better than something you would find in Purina Pro Plan.

We also liked that Purina typically only used a single animal protein source, while Victor used many. In the case that your dog develops sensitivity, it can be hard to figure out the culprit if you’re feeding Victor.

    Conclusion

Both of these brands are high-quality dog foods that should work for most dogs out there. We highly recommend them to just about any dog owner. Between both brands, you should be able to find just about anything you’re looking for.

However, we do like Purina Pro Plan just a little bit more than Victor. It is cheaper while still using many of the same ingredients. Furthermore, this brand has a lot of science backing its formulas.

Therefore, we typically recommend that the average dog eat Purina Pro Plan.
