What Is International Corgi Day? When Is It?
Updated on
International Corgi Day is the day that celebrates the little herding breed in all of their glory, observed around the world on June 4th. This day was first established in 2019 by a group of friends who later formed the Omaha Corgi Crew.
It was created to raise money for Corgi rescue charities and to celebrate Corgis and Corgi mixes across the globe. The Omaha Corgi Crew holds events at dog parks on this happy day, encouraging owners to connect and have fun with their gorgeous Corgis.
Does the United States Celebrate on a Different Day?
Yes, National Welsh Corgi Day is celebrated in the US on March 1st. However, International Corgi Day is always held on June 4th, even in the US. The day is celebrated the world over, including in the UK, which celebrates the Queen’s Corgis along with all Corgis across the world.
Why Is the Corgi Famous?
The Corgi is a very well-known, influential breed, even more so for the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the preferred dog of the late Queen Elizabeth II. She owned over 30 Corgis and Corgi mixes during her reign as Queen.
Corgis have been featured in Royal memorabilia, on TV, and in films, and they’re praised as excellent herding dogs. The AKC (American Kennel Club) even holds herding competitions, which Corgis often excel at.
They’re also known for being good with children, friendly, and well-mannered when properly trained. However, they need regular exercise to burn off that herding energy to prevent destructive behavior.
The Royal Corgis
Queen Elizabeth of England owned more than 30 Corgis from 1952 to 2022. The Queen Mother also kept Corgis, and the Queen fell in love with them, getting her first Corgi (Susan) in 1944. Susan even traveled with the Queen on her honeymoon. All of the Queen’s Corgis descended from Susan; over the years, they have been immortalized on coins, paintings, and magazine covers.
Are There Celebratory Days for Other Dog Breeds?
Yes! There’s a day celebrated for nearly every breed of dog, as well as cats, small furry pets, and even exotics! For example, in January alone, there are nine separate celebratory days for these dog breeds:
- January 6th: National Standard Poodle Day
- January 7th: National Alaskan Malamute Day
- January 8th: National Labrador Retriever Day
- January 9th: National Australian Shepherd Day
- January 13th: National French Bulldog Day
- January 15th: National American Eskimo Dog Day
- January 16th: National Bouvier De Flandres Day
- January 17th: National Boxer Day
- January 22nd: National Yorkshire Terrier Day
There are days for dogs throughout the year, which small groups of breed fanatics often organize, but they grow into global celebrations.
Final thoughts
Corgis are so unique that they need to have their own international day of celebration, held on June 4th worldwide. Corgis were made famous by the Royal family of the United Kingdom, but their fluffy coats and large but adorable ears have earned them much-deserved global affection and recognition.
