Zuma from Paw Patrol - Guru Animation Studio, Spin Master Ltd

Zuma is a Labrador Retriever. While these dogs are stereotypically tan or golden in color, they also come in brown. These Labrador Retrievers are called “chocolate” due to their coloration.

This breed loves water, which makes them very fitting for a water rescue dog. Real Labrador Retrievers were also utilized for water rescue, so the show’s writers seem to have done a great job in choosing this breed.

Despite some misconceptions, Zuma is not a dachshund or similar dog breed. This breed wouldn’t be very suitable for a water rescue canine, anyway, as their short legs make swimming challenging.

More About Labrador Retrievers

Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in America. These are known for being extremely friendly and outgoing, which is often why they are chosen for family pets. However, these dogs are larger, and they are pretty energetic. Therefore, they are most suited for an active family and those looking for a more involved relationship with their dog.

Labrador Retrievers are an excellent option for dog sports. They perform well in just about everything. Plus, participation in sports is an excellent way for them to use their intelligent mind and energy. Of course, this isn’t required, but many Labrador Retriever owners occasionally practice these sports—even if they don’t compete.

Initially, these dogs were made for retrieving fishing nets. Therefore, they are great at swimming. Playing fetch in a pond or lake is a great way to help them practice this pastime and provide some exercise. Plus, this type of exercise is easy on the joints, which many Labrador Retrievers have problems with.

Personality

Labradors have the reputation of being some of the friendliest dogs out there. Therefore, they are an excellent option for those looking for a good-natured canine that fits well with family life. When properly socialized, these dogs get along with everyone—those with lots of family get-togethers will appreciate this dog’s ability to withstand a crowd.

Due to their high intelligence, these dogs are pretty easy to train. However, they need training due to their larger size and sometimes hyper nature. Plus, training helps keep them mentally stimulated, which is vital for keeping them well-behaved.

A bored dog often tries to make their own fun, which is typically not what you want a dog to be doing.

This breed isn’t the most hyperactive dog out there. However, they do have a high exercise need. Therefore, it is highly recommended that only active families adopt these dogs. Otherwise, you may have a hard time meeting their exercise needs.

Luckily, these dogs are fun-loving and enjoy just about every type of exercise. They do love food, though, so care should be taken to ensure that they don’t overeat.

Unlike other children’s shows with dogs, each dog in the PAW Patrol has a set breed—and they tend to follow this pretty closely. Some of these breeds are pretty easy to pinpoint, such as Chase who is a German Shepherd. Often, the show writers choose breeds that fit the dog’s purpose in the show, which is precisely why Zuma is a Labrador Retriever.

However, some of the other breeds are a bit more confusing. It is difficult to tell what breed Skye is, for instance. Here’s a quick list of dogs on the Paw Patrol and their breed.

Conclusion

Despite not being the most popular coloration of the breed, Zuma is a Labrador Retriever. He has a chocolate shade, which isn’t the most common color. However, it is recognized by the AKC and has existed since this breed began.

Labrador Retrievers love the water and are used for various water jobs. Initially, they were utilized to reel-in fishing lines and help fishermen with other tasks. However, they are used for water rescue today, as well as in their original job. Therefore, Zuma’s breed is exceptionally fitting.
