Cats do many strange things, like joyfully bringing you a dead bird as a gift or suddenly zooming around the house at top speed for no apparent reason. So as far as weird behavior is concerned, enjoying chin scratches is near the bottom of the list, but some cats absolutely love getting chin rubs and will go as far as seeking you out to bestow scratches upon them.

If you’re wondering why cats love chin scratches so much, we have the answer—or answers, rather. So, keep reading to find five likely reasons your kitty begs for more chin lovin’.

The 5 Reasons Why Cats Like Chin Scratches

1. They Love How It Feels

Perhaps the most obvious reason your cat enjoys chin scratches is that they feel good. Chin rubs for cats are akin to back rubs for humans, so you can’t blame your kitty for seeking out scratches occasionally.

2. They Think You’re Grooming Them

Have you ever had two cats that bonded so intensely that they would groom one another? That’s because cats express love through grooming. Allogrooming (communal, social grooming) occurs in tightly-knit cat communities to reinforce social hierarchies and bonding.

In addition, your cat probably appreciates chin scratches because that’s an area they can’t really reach themselves. Your kitty may even “groom” you back by licking you.

3. They Have Pheromones on Their Faces

Cat pheromones are chemical compounds used by cats for communication. They’re produced and detected by the cat’s bodily systems and will elicit certain behavioral responses. Pheromones are often released through scent rubbing, or when cats rub themselves up on objects, other cats, and humans.

Cats have many pheromone glands on their heads, like under their chins and on their cheeks. So, when you give your kitty chin scratches, they’re essentially slathering you in their scent, telling you that they’re comfy around you and that you’re a part of their family group.

Your cat may also be bribing you into chin scratches so they can detect your pheromones.

4. They’re Itchy

Your kitty may be asking for skin scratches because it’s itchy. If it asks for much more attention in that area than usual, it may have a skin or parasite condition causing the itchiness. Things like flea bites or food allergies can cause your kitty excessive itchiness and may make them rub their cheeks and chin on whatever they can to get some relief.

If your cat’s itchiness is accompanied by areas of redness, hair loss, bleeding, and crustiness, you should schedule a visit with the vet.

Feline acne is a disorder that occurs due to an overproduction of keratin. Blackheads and pimples can form when this excessive keratin becomes trapped in your cat’s hair follicles. Other signs of feline acne to look for include a dirty appearance of the chin, swollen lips, swollen chin, crusty lesions, and pain when touched.

5. They Love the Bonding Time

Not only do chin scratches feel great, but it gives you and your pet a perfect opportunity to bond. Your kitty likely loves the quality time chin scratches provide the two of you.

It might also remind your fur baby of its younger life with its mother. When your pet was a kitten, its mom spent much time grooming them.
