If you’re on a road trip or hunting for some outdoor gear, you might wonder if Cabela’s would be a good place to stop with your pup. Bass Pro Shops, the giant fishing supplies chain, bought Cabela’s in 2017. While Cabela’s focuses on hunting gear and Bass Pro Shops cater towards fishermen, both companies carry similar products and target all outdoor enthusiasts beyond the rods and barrels. The chains are so well integrated that gift cards and returns are accepted at either store. Thankfully for pet parents, both stores also share a dog-friendly policy and even carry products made for your pup. Here’s everything you need to know about bringing dogs to Cabela’s.
Can I Take My Dog to Cabela’s?
Canines are welcome to shop in Cabela’s as long as they’re well-behaved and in a cart or on a leash. According to their website, all Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops stores uphold the dog-friendly policy. However, local restrictions may apply in limited cases. For example, dogs won’t be allowed if it goes against a local ordinance or health code, such as if there’s a cafe inside the store. Depending on the situation, the dog may still be allowed in some parts of the store, but not in the area near the eatery.
If your dog is a service animal, such as a guide dog, they must be admitted without question. Unfortunately, emotional support animals do not have the same protections. Except for limited cases regarding renting houses, emotional support animals mostly fall under the same rules as pets.
What Can You Do With Your Dog In Cabela’s?
If there’s a Cabela’s on your route, you’re a lucky dog! Many people prefer to take their canines to the store to stretch their legs on a road trip. Both Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops stores are well-stocked with treats, toys, and leashes if you want to give them something a little extra.
Both stores also periodically host Dog Days, a free canine-friendly event that encourages shoppers to bring their pets to fetch treats, activities, and even wellness checks. In November and December, Santa frequently stops by for free pictures with the kids. If your dog is on the nice list, they may even be able to snap a picture, too!
Summary
It’s official: dogs are welcomed into Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops. Rowdy dogs may be excluded, so make sure they’re on a leash and well-behaved. Otherwise, you shouldn’t have a problem unless it violates a local health code or there’s a cafe on-site. While you’re visiting, check out the pet section and ask an employee about their Dog Days where you can score free toys and treats.
