yorkie terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier is a highly sought-after breed known for its long, loose locks and bold personality. Also known as “yorkies”, these little terriers were originally bred to hunt small prey in the smallest places possible. They were developed in the late 19th century and still carry their hunting instincts with them, although they are now bred as companion dogs for the home. Yorkies are incredibly popular dogs with a long history, so it’s no surprise that they’re ranked in the top 15 most popular dog breeds. Although they weigh no more than 3 pounds in total, Yorkies have huge personalities and aren’t afraid to show it off.

The hair type of the Yorkshire

Yorkshire terriers have long, soft hair that grows like human hair, which means little to no shedding. They only have one layer of hair, and it even has a texture similar to human hair. For this reason, many people take their Yorkies to the groomer every month for a trim.

Although the absence of shedding is a huge asset, the York’s fleece should be groomed regularly to prevent it from matting and forming knots. Depending on the cut of your Yorkie, the maintenance of his fur can be extremely regular (daily brushing) or very infrequent and easy to maintain (little or no brushing necessary).

Let’s review some of the best cuts for Yorkies from this year and see which one suits your lifestyle best:

The 8 haircuts your Yorkie will love:

1. The classic show cut (or “classic show cut”)

Long and flowing, the classic show yorkshire cut is mainly reserved for dog breed shows, since their fur, at this length, will need to be brushed daily. However, if you plan to show your Yorkshire in competitions, the show cut will be a basic cut. If shows aren’t your thing, we recommend a shorter cut to save you from having to brush your dog multiple times a day.

2. The puppy/puppy cut

Interview : Not regular

The opposite of the show cut, the puppy cut is a style of cutting your Yorkie’s fur short for easy grooming. It is a perfect cut for summer and for naturally warm climates, especially if your Yorkie is particularly active. The puppy cut is also great when it comes to hygiene, as it helps prevent the buildup of feces in your dog’s fur, which can occur with longer style cuts.

3. The teddy/teddy cut

Interview : Slightly to moderately regular

As the name suggests, the teddy cut is “rounded” in style and gives your Yorkie a teddy bear appearance. It is similar to the puppy cut, but will require a little maintenance to avoid tangles. It is a popular cut for social media dogs due to its cute look which is very popular. So it’s a great option if your Yorkie is a social media star.

4. The schnauzer cut

Interview : Slightly to moderately regular

If you’ve always wanted a schnauzer, but currently have a yorkshire terrier, consider having him sport the schnauzer cut. This cut looks remarkably like that of a miniature schnauzer, right down to the “beard”. This style will require weekly brushing to maintain the coat, but is short enough that it won’t tangle overnight.

5. The westie cut

Similar to the schnauzer cut, the Westie cut is a great option if you want to give your Yorkie a unique look. Westies have a distinct coat style, which your groomer can mimic with your Yorkie’s hair. It is a shorter style that will also be easy to maintain.

6. The lion cut

Interview : Moderately regular

The lion cut is more of a show-stopper that will give your Yorkie a nice lion’s mane and clean-shaven body. While the shaved hair will not need brushing, the “mane” will need to be brushed to keep it soft and tangle free. It’s a great cut for parties like Halloween, as well as for social media.

7. The three-layered cut

Interview : very regular

If you like the look of the show cut, but can’t manage the length, the three layer cut can be a good option. Although it requires a lot more brushing than shorter cuts, it allows your Yorkie to show off his long, silky coat. It is also an excellent winter cut to provide extra warmth for your Yorkie, especially in extremely cold climates.

8. The designer cut

Interview : Extremely regular

This last cut is less of a cut and more of a fun way for your groomer to show off their artistic side. Designer cuts can be any length, style and shape, so it will depend on what your groomer is capable of. Designer cuts can be fun and exciting for a variety of reasons, but some can turn out to be more of a hassle than they’re worth.

How to choose a fit

Choosing a cut for your Yorkie is quite a big decision and may result in additional upkeep depending on the style chosen. If you’re looking for low-maintenance cuts or live in warmer regions, opt for shorter styles like the teddy cut, puppy cut, or westie cut. For those who don’t mind brushing and live in colder climates, longer cuts will be a better option. Whichever cut you choose, your Yorkie’s fur will grow and can be styled again and again.
