Who doesn’t love burritos? They are one of the most popular Mexican foods out there. But have you ever wondered if your furry friend can enjoy them, too? Well, as much as you want to share your burrito with your doggo, think twice.

Unfortunately, burritos are not safe for dogs to eat. They contain ingredients that can be harmful to your furry friend, such as various spices and fat. And if it contains garlic and onion, it’s even worse—both are toxic to dogs and can cause anemia. So, as much as you want to share some of your burrito with your furry friend, it’s best to avoid giving them burritos altogether.

These Mexican delicacies consist of a warm flour tortilla wrapped around a tasty meat, beans, and cheese filling. You can grab them with your hands and savor each bite with various delicious dips like guacamole, salsa, or sour cream. Burritos are relished worldwide, and in the US, they’ve become a go-to meal option that’s quick and easy to grab while you’re on the go.

Why Are Burritos Harmful to Dogs?

Your furry friend may have adorable puppy eyes that can melt hearts, but you might want to resist those pleading looks when it comes to burritos. Onion and garlic poisoning and stomach issues are just some of the complications that can arise. Moreover, the fats in cooking oil, some meats or cheese are not good for your furry friend, sometimes causing pancreatitis. While spices like chili peppers can be too hot to handle and cause stomach upsets.

And if your dog has lactose intolerance, as many do, ingredients like cheese or sour cream in breakfast burritos could cause digestive problems.

Health Risks of Eating Burritos

After consuming a substantial amount of burrito, your dog might exhibit some of these signs:

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Excessive salivation
  • Inappetance

If your dog exhibits any of these signs, don’t hesitate to call your vet. Be sure to tell them if your pup has eaten a burrito or any toxic food.

Safe and Dog-Friendly Alternatives

Many of the ingredients that make up a burrito filling can also make for a tasty and safe snack for your little buddy. Just keep it simple by avoiding salt, spices, and other additives that may cause stomach upsets. Your furry friend will thank you for this yummy and nutritious treat.

First up, chicken breast! Not only is it a lean source of protein, but it’s also gentle on your dog’s stomach. You won’t have to worry about any problems caused by tough bones, either. Next on the list is lean cuts of beef. It’s no surprise that beef is a popular ingredient in dog food. With any meat, cooking is recommended to remove bacteria and other parasites; make sure not to add any fats or oils during the cooking process.

Eggs are another option if cooked to remove potential bacteria; they are very nutritious.  Cooked beans are also a possible choice. While fried beans in burritos might not be the best for your pup, boiled beans are high in fiber and protein. They’re ok for a snack but not recommended as a daily meal.

Bell peppers are a fantastic addition to your dog’s diet as well. Unlike chili peppers, which are a big no-no, bell peppers are not spicy at all and ok as a snack.

Conclusion

We get it if you’re addicted to burritos—they’re just so yummy! But burritos are not safe for our furry friends. This food contains ingredients like onions, and garlic that are toxic for dogs. Even the cheese, fried beans, and sour cream in burritos can cause stomach issues.

As responsible pet parents, we have plenty of dog-friendly alternatives. If needed, you can spoil your pup with boiled boneless chicken or lean beef with steamed veggies and kibble. If your dog accidentally consumes some burrito or shows signs of illness, contact a vet or a local poison helpline for advice. Your furry friend will thank you for it!
