Can dog urine damage an air conditioner?

Unfortunately, yes , your dog can damage your air conditioner by peeing on the unit. Dog urine contains acid, and this acid will corrode aluminum fins and copper coils. If your dog urinates on the device repeatedly, his urine will eventually eat away at the metal.

If this happens, you will experience an increase in your electric bill, failure and/or the need to replace the Freon, a drop in performance of the unit itself, replacement of coils and fins, or the replacement of the entire device. Anyone who has ever had to replace an air conditioner knows how expensive it is. Preventing the problem will save you money and a lot of annoyance.

Why do dogs urinate on air conditioners?

Generally, a male dog pees on the air conditioner to mark his territory. If your dog does it regularly and you don’t do anything to dissuade him, he will continue because the smell of urine will attract him again and again. So it is best to stop this behavior as soon as possible to protect your air conditioner from this damage.

How to remove dog urine from air conditioner coils?

As mentioned, you must eliminate urine as soon as you catch your dog in the act. But before you do anything, turn off the power to the device at the circuit breaker. In fact, the appliance must not be switched on during cleaning.

Then, remove all protective screens and clean lightly with a garden hose. As long as the protective grids are removed, you can also hose down the coil that has been soiled. If you see debris, take the opportunity to remove leaves, pollen, etc. which may affect the performance of the device. Using a cleaning brush, gently brush the outer and inner fins. Replace the protective grilles and wait at least one hour before switching the device back on.

We would like to point out that if you do not feel capable of carrying out this task yourself, bring in a professional.

How to stop your dog from urinating on your air conditioner?

Now that you’ve discovered that your dog is peeing on your air conditioner, it’s time to put an end to this behavior. An effective way is to plant bushes around the device. If you opt for this solution, be careful not to block the airflow of your air conditioner, as this could cause malfunctions. Experts recommend placing bushes or shrubs at least 1 meter away from the device .

You can also build a fence or put a wire around the device, but be sure to place it at least one meter away. Also, don’t let the fence completely envelop the device. The air conditioner needs space to allow airflow, and using a weatherproof material , such as mesh, will help a lot.

Another option is to spray animal repellent around the air conditioner to keep your dog away. If you choose this solution, be careful not to spray it directly on your air conditioner. These sprays are meant to create a sort of barrier, so only spray near the device.

However, if you apply the methods described above, you will be able to dissuade your dog from engaging in this unwanted behavior.
