The Scottish Terrier is a beloved dog breed that has been around for years. Known instantly for their short legs, stocky build, and magnificent beards, Scottish Terriers have an independent attitude with tons of love for their families. When it comes to Scottie colors, most people instantly think of the ever-popular black coat. Easily the most common, black is what many of us think of when discussing these amazing dogs. Thankfully, for dog lovers who want a Scottie but would prefer a unique color, there are more options out there. The 6 Scottish Terrier Colors

1. Black

Black is the most common Scottish Terrier color. Throughout the years, this color has been featured in newspaper ads, television commercials, and the like. Of course, as the most common color, it is the one most reported by owners. Oddly enough, some solid black Scottish Terriers even have a mask, although it isn’t noticeable in this coloration. Even former U.S. Presidents have had a liking for Scottish Terriers. President George W. Bush had a black Scottie that was often by his side.

2. Brindle

The brindle pattern is the presentation of darker stripes over the background fur that is lighter. This coloration has become more common in Scottish Terriers. While several brindle patterns are recognized for Scottish Terriers, and it is said that no brindle patterns are frowned upon, there are only certain brindle colorations listed as accepted by the AKC. You’ll hear many people refer to brindle as tiger stripes.

3. Wheaten

Wheaten is considered a rare coloration in Scottish Terriers. This color is often confused with white. There are no truly white Scotties, however, the wheaten coloration can be quite light at times. Wheaten can be from a pale beige to a golden color. The rarity of this coloration makes it quite sought-after by Scottish Terrier enthusiasts.

4. Black Brindle

Black brindle coloration appears when the stripes featured in the brindle color are darker. One of the most famous black brindle Scottish Terriers in the world was Fala. Fala was Franklin D. Roosevelt’s beloved Scottie. Americans loved Fala so much that he received his own fan mail and well wishes. A statue of Fala honors this pup, who was a devoted pet to one of our Presidents.

5. Red Brindle

Brindle can appear in multiple colors. One of the most common is red brindle. This is when the background red hue is quite noticeable. With brindle colors, the marking won’t always appear as stripes. You may notice blotches or other patterns.

6. Silver Brindle

The beautiful silver brindle occurs when the Scottish Terrier in question has a very light base color. Like the other brindle colorations found in Scottish Terriers, silver brindle can be considered rare. It is also one of the brindle colorations listed by the American Kennel Club.

Each of the colors listed above is accepted by the American Kennel Club as part of the Scottish Terrier breed standard.
