Did you know that 6.3 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters each year?1 Thankfully, the month of October is Adopt a Dog Month, also called Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, which gives the public an opportunity to become educated on the many benefits adopting a dog will bring to their lives. It also gives dogs in shelters more of a chance of being adopted into loving homes. Sure, you can always shell out big bucks for a dog from a breeder, but why not give a dog in need a loving home for more than half the cost?

Let’s learn more about Adopt a Dog Month along with ways you can help if you’re not in the position to adopt.

October Is Adopt a Dog Month

October is a time to welcome the fall and decorate your home with Halloween décor and fall colors. It’s also a time to celebrate Adopt a Dog Month. Since 1981, American Humane has been celebrating this holiday in an effort to give dogs in shelters a shot at life with a loving family.

Every year in the month of October, rescue groups, local shelters, and animal welfare groups unite to promote dog adoption from shelters. The holiday is supported by elite groups, such as the Society for the Prevention of the Cruelty of Animals (SPCA) and the Humane Society. Some shelters even waive adoption fees during October in an effort to get more canines adopted into forever homes.

Some dogs in shelters get overlooked because they are not a puppy or not purebred. However, shelter dogs have lots of love to offer, and they make excellent family companions if only given the chance.

Ways to Celebrate Adopt-a-Dog Month

The best way to celebrate the month is by adopting a dog from a shelter, especially a senior dog, because they get passed up time and time again. The goal is to get as many shelter dogs out of shelters and into loving homes, and the month of October is used to spread the word and educate people on the benefits of adopting a shelter dog.

However, not everyone is in a position to adopt a dog, and that’s okay! Adopting a dog is not something to be taken lightly, and it needs to be the right fit for everyone. So, what other ways can you celebrate if you can’t adopt? Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do.

1. Volunteer

Visit your local shelter and volunteer for the month as often as you can. Dogs in shelters thrive on visitors, and you can make these dogs’ day simply by spending time with them. If you’re willing and able, you can also foster a dog. Being a foster pet parent involves giving the dog a temporary, safe place to live while waiting to be adopted.

2. Take to Social Media

Post pictures of your beloved canine (or canines) along with a short story about your dog. If you adopted your dog from a shelter, sharing your story can help encourage others to consider adopting from a shelter.

3. Donate

Animal shelters are always in need of blankets, dog beds, food and water bowls, and other necessities. You can also make a monetary donation, which helps greatly with vaccines, medications, and spaying and neutering.

4. Spread the Word

Organize a drive to help spread awareness about the benefits of adopting a shelter dog. Enlist the help of family, friends, and coworkers to help raise funds and supplies and spread the word on social media.

How Shelter Dogs Are Different

Shelter dogs are often already grown and potty trained, and some are even seniors who have been surrendered for various reasons. One potential drawback is you may not know their background and history. Sadly, some shelter dogs are more prone to anxiety depending on their backgrounds, and they may have a health condition you’re unaware of.

However, don’t let these things deter you. In fact, use these things as motivators to adopt a dog in need. For example, most shelter dogs are loving and will gain your trust over time, even if they come from abusive backgrounds. In return, you’ll gain a best friend that will love you unconditionally.

Final Thoughts

While every month should be Adopt a Dog Month, you can use October as a way to bring awareness about the needs and rewards of shelter dog adoption. An animal shelter being overcrowded is a common occurrence, and the goal of this holiday is to empty out dog shelters across the nation. Shelter dogs have much to offer, and they all deserve loving homes.
