While you can’t feed your parrot any fruit or veggie you want, ripe pineapple is a safe choice for parrots as it is not toxic to them, however there are a few things you should consider before serving this fruit to your pet.

Considerations of Feeding Pineapple To Your Parrot

First, you need to take into account your parrot’s species. With parrots comprising hundreds of different species of bird, you would expect a wide variety of diets, which is what we absolutely do see. So, look into the ideal diet for your pet but in general most will benefit from some fruit in their diet.

The main consideration with pineapple specifically is the presence of the enzyme bromelain. While regulated amounts can be beneficial for people and even birds, it does have a low level of toxicity in rats, mice, rabbits and people. While it is unknown how bromelain could affect parrots, it’s best to be cautious and offer pineapple in smaller amounts along with a healthy rotation of other appropriate food.

In addition, unripe pineapple contains much larger quantities of bromelain, so it’s best to avoid unripe pineapple altogether.

Benefits of Pineapple for Your Parrot

Not only can you feed your parrot pineapple, but there are several health benefits! In the wild, some parrots eat pineapple, making it an excellent natural food source for your parrot as long as you give it to them in moderation.

Pineapples contain water, fiber, and vitamins, providing numerous benefits for your parrot. Not only can parrots eat pineapple flesh, but they can also safely eat the skin of the pineapple as well. You can even feed a parrot the core of a pineapple, so just be sure to cut it into bite-sized pieces.

Other Great Foods for Your Parrot

Not only can you feed your parrot some pineapples from time to time, but there are also some other treats you can give them!

Pellets

Commercial species-appropriate pellets should make up 50 to 70% of your parrot’s diet. Commercial pellets ensure your parrots get all the necessary nutrients, which can be incredibly difficult to meet with veggies, beans, and fruits alone. It might not be your parrot’s favorite food, but it is the most important.

Other Fruits and Vegetables

Healthy fruits and vegetables are key to the diet of most parrot species. Again, check the requirements for your pet’s species but some other possible options include:

  • Asparagus
  • Banana
  • Blueberry
  • Broccoli
  • Bok choy
  • Dandelion leaves
  • Grapes
  • Kale
  • Kiwi
  • Parsnips
  • Raspberry
  • Romaine Lettuce
  • Strawberry
  • Sweet peppers
  • Zucchini

Toxic Foods for Birds

Stay away from any foods that could be toxic including:

  • All parts of the avocado plant
  • Chocolate
  • Fruit seeds or pits containing cyanide including cherries, apples, peaches and apricots.
  • Onion and garlic
  • Xylitol
  • Processed human foods

Final Thoughts

Now that you know you can safely feed your parrot any part of the pineapple, all that’s left is for you to start chopping it up and preparing it for them. It’s all part of a balanced diet, though, so don’t let your parrot just gorge themselves on the stuff and not eat the other foods they need to thrive.
