Can dog urine damage an air conditioner?

Unfortunately yes , your dog can damage your air conditioner by peeing on the unit itself. Dog urine contains acid and this acid will attack the aluminum fins and copper coils. If your dog repeatedly pees on the device, the urine will eat away at the metal.

When this happens, your electric bill increases, freon shortage and/or replacement occurs, unit performance drops, coils and fins need to be replaced, or the entire unit needs to be replaced. Anyone who has ever replaced an air conditioner knows how expensive it is. Avoiding this problem will save you money and a lot of hassle.

Why do dogs pee on air conditioners?

Normally a male will pee on the device to mark his territory. If your dog repeatedly pees on the device and you don’t do anything to discourage him from the behavior, he will continue to pee in the same spot because the smell of urine keeps drawing him back. It is best to stop this behavior as soon as possible to protect your system from damage.

How to remove dog urine from air conditioner coils

As we mentioned earlier, you should rinse off the urine as soon as you catch your dog in the act. However, before you do anything, turn off the power to your air conditioner in your fuse box . You don’t want the device to be powered while cleaning.

Next, remove any guards and lightly spray the unit with a garden hose. Also spray down the dirty coil while removing the protective screen. If you see debris, now is a good time to remove leaves, pollen, etc. that could be affecting the unit’s performance. Use a fin cleaning brush to gently brush the outer and inner fins. Replace the protective screens and wait at least an hour before turning the device back on.

We would like to point out that if you cannot do this task yourself, you should always hire a professional to do it.

How to stop your dog from peeing on your air conditioner

Now that you’ve determined that your dog is peeing on your air conditioner, it’s time to stop this behavior as soon as possible. An effective method is to plant bushes around the device . If you decide to use this method, be careful not to block your device’s airflow as this can also cause problems. Experts recommend planting bushes or shrubs at a distance of at least one meter from the device.

You can also erect a fence or wire around the device; just make sure he’s at least three feet away. In addition, the fence must not completely enclose the device. The unit requires space to allow airflow and the use of weather resistant material such as B. grids, works well.

Another option is to spray a pet repellent around the device to keep your dog away in the first place. If you decide to use this method, be careful not to spray the solution directly onto your air conditioner. A spray is designed to create some sort of barrier, so only spray near the device.

last words

We all love our dogs, but it can be frustrating when they are behaving in any form of destructive behavior . Of course, your dog doesn’t pee on your air conditioner to piss you off; that’s just something male dogs do. However, if you use the methods above, you can break this unwanted behavior in your dog.
