The Shih Tzu is an ancient dog breed that has a long history dating back thousands of years1. These dogs were companions for Chinese royalty before being exported around the world and gaining popularity as pets among the masses. Today, Shih Tzus enjoys a reputation for being fun, playful, loyal, and dignified. These dogs have soft, furry coats that make cuddling a pleasure. It’s been said that Shih Tzus loves to cuddle, even more so than the average dog breed. Is there any truth to this? Find the answer to this question and more here!

Yes, Shih Tzus Tend to Be Extremely Cuddly

The typical Shih Tzu is attentive and affectionate and loves to spend time with their human companions. Some consider them lap dogs because it’s a favorite nap spot for them. These dogs are naturally loving and forgiving, and they’ll rarely pass up a cuddling opportunity. Shih Tzus are known for following their human family members around the house just waiting for an opportunity to jump in a lap or lie on a pair of feet.

This is not to say that Shih Tzus are overbearing or annoying with their affection, however. Some of these dogs do become accustomed to always getting their way, and their stubbornness can take hold. However, most Shih Tzus understand boundaries and will give their companions space.

Not All Shih Tzus Are Highly Affectionate and Cuddly

There are some Shih Tzus that aren’t that affectionate and will rarely initiate physical interactions. They don’t try to jump in a lap whenever possible, and they don’t care too much about following anyone around. They still like to cuddle and won’t pass up an invitation to do so, but they just aren’t as driven by affection as the typical Shih Tzu is.

Does Age Matter When It Comes to Cuddling?

Age can play a role in how much a Shih Tzu wants to cuddle with their human companions. Younger puppies are generally extra playful, so they’d rather roll around and nip at your hands than cuddle up and nap. Adult dogs tend to display the desire for playtime and cuddle time equally. When fun is happening, cuddling can wait until later.

If nothing too exciting is going on, cuddling is likely at the top of their minds. Older dogs are less active and tend to be more interested in cuddling with family members. There is no hard-and-fast rule here, though — only generalizations with anticipated exceptions.

Final Thoughts

Cuddling is one of the fun parts of being a pet owner. Fortunately, most Shih Tzus are amazing cuddlers and are happy to curl up with you anytime they get the opportunity. These playful dogs are also good with kids and can get along well with other pets in the household. However, they can be stubborn, which can make training a challenge. It’s important to weigh all the pros and cons before deciding if this is the right dog breed for your household.
