When the weather turns nasty, indoor dog parks can be very useful. Sadly, they aren’t as common as you might think, and most of them require a fee. After all, indoor dog parks have to be in a building, which means that someone has to pay the rent.

There aren’t many dog parks in Grand Rapids, Michigan, either. That said, the only indoor dog park in the state is near Grand Rapids, so we will take a close look at that one!

The Pack Indoor Dog Park is Michigan’s first indoor dog park, daycare, bar, and restaurant. It’s open throughout much of the day, seven days a week. However, during peak winter hours, you may have to limit your dog’s stay to only an hour at a time to help reduce the wait for incoming dogs.

The whole park is off-leash and has two separate places for your dog to play: a small park for smaller dogs and a larger one for big dogs. There is also a separate area for puppies. Like most indoor parks, the whole thing is climate-controlled, allowing you to enjoy it year-round.

There are also training classes available from time to time. You can enjoy the bar and restaurant portion of the building while your dog runs around and play. The menu features many dog-friendly drinks and food, too.

There aren’t many indoor dog parks nearby, making this one of the very few places that dog owners in the area can go in the winter.

Hillcrest Dog Park is an outdoor dog park that encompasses several acres of land. Much of the area is fenced, allowing your dog to roam freely and play with others. However, there is also a soccer field and baseball field located on the premises.

The park has its own parking lot and is open year-round.

Covell Dog Park is one of the more popular outdoor dog parks in the city. However, it is pretty small at under an acre. Still, there is enough room for your canine to run around a bit. There are also several seating options within the park, so you can rest while your dog plays with their furry friends. Parking is very close to the dog park and doesn’t tend to fill up.

Why Aren’t There More Indoor Dog Parks Near Grand Rapids, MI?

Indoor dog parks are costly to build and operate. They need quite a big space that is climate-controlled, and most dog parks have extra equipment. In most cases, there are employees to watch the dogs and control the number in the park at one time, as well. All of this adds up fast.

The demand for indoor dog parks is also often not high enough to support many locations. Grand Rapids has a number of outdoor dog parks (some of which are free). Many owners may not be willing to pay for an indoor dog park when there are free outdoor dog parks outside.

Zoning regulations may also make it harder to build indoor dog parks in certain areas. They may not be allowed near residential areas, as they are technically businesses.

Conclusion

While there is only one indoor dog park in Grand Rapids, MI, it is very high-quality and has an indoor restaurant. It does require a monthly fee, but this is lower than most options out there. If you’re looking for an indoor dog park, you may not have many options. However, at least you do have one option, and most people in Michigan can’t say that.
