Native Pet is a pet wellness brand based in St. Louis, Missouri. What makes Native Pet stand out from many other pet wellness companies is that it formulates all its supplements in-house and with the consultation of a Board-Certified Vet Nutritionist.

Along with using all-natural, human-grade ingredients, Native Pet supplements have very simple ingredient lists that all contain no more than five inactive ingredients. So, they’re considerable options for dogs that have food allergies or sensitive stomachs.

If your dog doesn’t have food allergies or a picky palate, you could get by with feeding it supplements from other companies. However, Native Pet’s high-quality products are sold at comparable prices. You also get the benefits of attention to detail and quality control that small businesses provide. So, if you’re interested in adding natural supplements to your dog’s diet, you don’t really have much to lose by trying out Native Pet.

I’ve tested some Native Pet products, and my honest review is here to help you make informed decisions in your search for dog supplements. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about Native Pet and if it’s the right choice for your dog.

Who Makes Native Pet and Where Is It Produced?

Native Pet was founded in 2017 by two longtime friends, Patrick Barron and Dan Schaefer. They were inspired to start Native Pet after noticing a lack of high-quality pet supplements in the pet food industry.

Native Pet is based in St. Louis, Missouri. All of its product recipes are developed and formulated in-house with the consultation and involvement of a Board-Certified Vet Nutritionist.

While Native Pet doesn’t have a physical storefront, all its products can be easily purchased through its website. Many major retailers also have it in stock, including Chewy, Amazon, and Target.

Which Types of Dogs Is Native Pet Best Suited For?

Most dogs will benefit from Native Pet’s supplements. Native Pet offers several different supplements for specific health and wellness concerns, including digestion, skin and coat, mobility, and anxiety.

Native Pet supplements have simple formulas that only contain essential ingredients. They aren’t like many other supplement chews that usually contain fillers and starches to hold the chews together. Most Native Pet supplements come in powdered form or as oils because they omit non-essential ingredients. Because of its simple ingredient lists, dogs with sensitive stomachs or food allergies will have an easier time digesting the supplements.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

Native Pet works with hand-selected farms and suppliers to use high-quality ingredients for its supplements. Here are some of the main ingredients you’ll find in its Omega Oil and Probiotic Powder for Dogs supplements.

    Wild-Caught Pollock and Salmon Oil

Wild-caught fish means that the fish has been harvested from its natural habitat rather than being farm-raised. Both methods of harvesting fish have their advantages, but wild-caught fish have the upper hand in containing fewer contaminants and having lower levels of saturated fats.

Fish oil has many health benefits, including nourishing the skin and coat, reducing inflammation, and supporting eye health. Fish oil contains DHA and EPA, which are omega-3 fatty acids that are linked to lowering blood pressure and managing heart disease.

    Beef Broth

High-quality beef broth and other bone broths are highly nutritious for dogs. Beef broth can add more moisture to a dog’s diet to keep it better hydrated. It can also strengthen the immune system, support joint health, and improve digestive health. Dogs that suffer from leaky gut syndrome can benefit from drinking beef broth as it helps their bodies take in more essential nutrients.

    Pumpkin Seed

Pumpkin seeds are highly nutritious and are also easy for dogs to digest. The pumpkin seed is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and can help maintain the functioning of the bladder, bowel, and liver.

    Probiotic Blend

Studies have shown that probiotics can help improve intestinal health, alleviate symptoms of lactose intolerance, and may reduce the risk of developing several different diseases. The Native Pet Probiotic Powder for Dogs contains four probiotics:

    • Faecium
    • Animalis
    • Bifidum
    • Coagulans

It’s important to remember that all of Native Pet’s supplements have been formulated by a Board-Certified Vet Nutritionist. So, its probiotic blend has been measured to be the most optimal and effective proportion for dogs.

    Mixed Tocopherols

Mixed tocopherols are essentially a blend of different kinds of vitamin E. Along with adding more vitamin E to the body, mixed tocopherols are often used as a food preservative because they can help reduce the oxidation of ingredients.

    Simple Ingredient Lists

One of the first things you’ll notice about Native Pet products are the short ingredient lists. Unlike many commercial pet supplements that have complex lists filled with inactive ingredients, Native Pet supplements contain no more than five inactive ingredients.

Simple ingredient lists are beneficial for dogs that have food allergies or sensitive stomachs. They help you know exactly what you’re feeding your dog and often help with determining possible food allergens more quickly.

    Easily Digestible Ingredients

Native Pet uses natural ingredients that are also nutritious and easy for dogs to digest. So, you’ll find several different kinds of ingredients that also promote digestive health, like fish oil, green-lipped mussel, hemp seed powder, bone broth, and pumpkin.

The supplements also contain human-grade, whole-food ingredients. So, rather than finding chicken flavoring, you’ll find real chicken used in the supplements.

    Tested for Palatability

Native Pet pays attention to important details and formulates their supplements with palatability in mind. All their supplements are taste-tested by real dogs before being rolled out to the public. Because the supplements don’t contain any fillers and use all-natural ingredients, it’s much more likely that picky dogs will eat them.

You can see Native Pet’s mindfulness of palatability by examining the ingredient list of its Probiotic Powder for Dogs supplement. Dehydrated beef broth is its first ingredient, which is a savory treat favored by many dogs, and it also has several nutritional benefits. Rather than using artificial flavoring, Native Pet uses a tasty blend of nutritious foods to encourage dogs to consume more probiotics.

    Limited Flavor Options

Native Pet controls 100% of the formulation of its supplements, so it has much more control over its supplier selections and manufacturing processes. However, it’s still a relatively small company, so the variety of supplements is limited in comparison to larger pet food companies.

This can be an issue if your dog has food allergies. For example, chicken is one of the most common food allergens for dogs, and it’s an ingredient in several Native Pet supplements, including the Native Pet Calm Air-Dried Chicken Chews. So, dogs with chicken allergies won’t be able to eat this supplement, and there are currently no other flavor options for this type of supplement.

The Native Pet Probiotic Powder for Dogs supplement may have a simple ingredient list of just four ingredients, but it has an effective formula. It contains a powerful probiotic blend of 6 billion CFU per dose that improves and supports gut health and the digestive system. The supplement also includes dehydrated beef broth and organic pumpkin seeds, which are both nutritious and tasty for dogs.

This supplement can be fed to dogs daily or as needed. It comes in a powdered form that you can easily incorporate into your dog’s meals. Since it’s been taste-tested by real dogs, you can rest assured that your dog will enjoy this palatable addition to its meals. The only issue is that beef broth is the first ingredient, so if your dog has beef allergies, this supplement won’t be safe for it to eat.

This Native Pet Omega Oil supplement is an excellent supplement to give to dogs that need extra support for their skin, coat, and joints. The formula has a very clean and simple ingredient list with wild-caught salmon and pollock oil as the first ingredient. Wild-caught fish often have lower amounts of saturated fats and contaminants compared to farm-raised fish.

The supplement comes with a pre-measured pump that takes the guesswork of how much to feed your dog, so your dog will always get the right dosage. While your dog will enjoy the taste of this supplement, it naturally has a strong odor, which can get trapped in the hairs around your dog’s mouth. So, if your dog has particularly long facial hair or if you have a sensitive nose, you’ll want to wipe up your dog’s mouth right after eating to reduce the fishy smell.

    Pros
    • Wild-caught salmon and pollock oil is first ingredient
    • Supports skin, coat, and joints
    • Easy to administer
    Cons
    • Strong odor

    Our Experience With Native Pet

    cavapoo sniffing native pet products

I had an overall positive experience with Native Pet’s Probiotic Powder for Dogs and Omega Oil supplements. My 8-year-old Cavapoo was my taste tester. She’s always had a sensitive stomach and picky palate, so it’s usually very difficult to find food, treats, and supplements that she can both digest easily and enjoy.

I was most impressed by the Native Pet Probiotic Powder for Dogs because it passed the taste test with my dog. Our vet recommended probiotic supplements to help with her digestive issues. I’ve tried many probiotic supplements, and she turned her nose away from all of them. So, I resorted to feeding her a liquid probiotic with a dropper. She doesn’t enjoy it, but it’s been the quickest and surest way of getting her to take probiotics.

Unlike my previous experiences with probiotics, my dog showed a lot of interest in the Native Pet Probiotic Powder for Dogs. The moment I opened the container, she walked right over and started sniffing it curiously. I gave her a small amount on a plate, and she licked it all up! It was easy to feed because I could just mix it in with her food, and it eliminated the need to find creative ways to sneak probiotics into her diet.

My dog hasn’t had any issues transitioning to this new probiotic supplement. She usually has loose stool or diarrhea when eating new things. Just to be extra safe, I started by giving her small amounts and gradually increasing them to the recommended dosage, and I’m relieved and happy to report that she’s been having healthy bowel movements and normal stools.

The Native Pet Omega Oil also worked well with my dog. I live in an area with dry winters, which is when we tested out these supplements. The winters are rough on my dog’s paw pads, and her skin and coat often get irritated from dryness and static, so I usually add fish oil to her food during this season. After just a few days of feeding her the Omega Oil supplement, I noticed that her coat was much softer and had less static. I also noticed that she was licking her paws less, and it seemed like the Omega Oil worked well with the paw wax I use to keep her paw pads moisturized during the winter.

Aside from the health benefits, I’m most appreciative of Native Pet’s simple ingredient lists. I’m more willing to try other Native Pet products because I know exactly what my dog is eating and can avoid any products that contain ingredients that my dog can’t eat. Native Pet definitely makes shopping much easier for people with dogs with food sensitivities and allergies. It also passed my picky dog’s taste test, which is truly a huge win and a badge of honor.

    Conclusion

After testing out some Native Pet products, it was very clear to me that this company is very thoughtful and thorough with its supplement formulas. I was pleasantly surprised by how well they worked, despite having such short ingredient lists. I was most impressed by how palatable they were to my dog. If you have a dog with a sensitive stomach, I would highly recommend giving Native Pet a try.

As it’s a relatively young company, there’s still much room for growth. So, I look forward to seeing how Native Pet will expand its line of products. I hope to see more flavors for their currently existing products so that dogs with specific food allergies can also eat them and experience the health benefits.
