3 Little-Known Facts About The Pomeranian Keeshond Mix

1. Pom Kees are new hybrids.

This means there isn’t a lot of information on its history and origin. They’re recognized as official hybrid dogs, however, by the Dog Registry of America.

2. Their parent breeds have been around for a long time.

Pomeranians have been popular and smaller in size since the late 1800s when Queen Victoria had them bred smaller. They used to be almost 30 pounds and a height of 15 inches. Now they are the size to be a lap dog.

3. The popularity of Keeshonds goes back to the 1200s and 1300s.

They became popular back then because they were great guard and watchdogs. It was also discovered by breeders that they had a lot of other uses, like hunting little animals and providing companionship, and that is what they are used for now. With these two breeds as the Pom Kee’s parents, they are great pets.

Temperament & Intelligence of the Pomeranian Keeshond Mix 🧠

Pom Kees, since they are hybrids of Pomeranians and Keeshonds, can inherit either parent’s temperament or both of them. Your Pom Kee may be alert, affectionate, gentle, energetic, cheerful, intelligent, loyal, lively, outgoing, and social. When you socialize your Pom Kee early, you’ll ensure that they will be friendly with strangers and kids. These dogs are very happy with being with their families and they want to always be around them. They don’t like being alone for long periods.

They also will generally get along with dogs well, but cats might find they’re being chased once in a while. The levels of intelligence that Pom Kees has make it easy to train when you’re using positive reinforcement. The one thing you should know about them is that they are barkers, so they likely won’t do well in areas that are noise-restricted such as apartments. Training your dog properly can help with moderating this, however.

Are These Dogs Good for Families?🏡

Yes, they love children. On  top of that, these hybrids are loyal and affectionate, which is exactly what you want in a family pet.

Things to Know When Owning a Pomeranian Keeshond Mix

We have given you some basic information about what to expect from getting a Pom Kee puppy, but there are many other things that you should know to help you make the decision. Below we will give you the information about living with the Pom Kee.

Food & Diet Requirements🦴

It’s really hard to pinpoint how much food you should give your Pom Kee because they all come in many different sizes. It’s important to give them high-quality food. If you are worried about knowing the amount of food to give your particular Pom Kee, it’s best to ask your vet.

Exercise🐕

Pom Kees are moderately active dogs. They will need anywhere from 30-60 minutes each day of some moderate exercise. Walking them vigorously daily, taking them for romps in a dog park or in your yard, along with playing frisbee and fetch will give your pet the mental and physical stimulation that they need.

If you leave your pet alone for lengthy periods of time and they’re left outdoors in your yard without being able to interact with you, they’re going to start nuisance barking. This may be a huge problem if you’re in an area that is noise restricted. The same goes if you aren’t home most of the day. They can live in rural or urban settings, in a condo or apartment, along with family homes. They don’t need a yard that is fenced in, as long as you give them the exercise that they need to be happy, fit, and healthy.

Due to their dense coat, they’ll be better equipped to handle cool temperatures, and they will need to stay in air conditioning or ventilated areas when the weather is hot.

Training🦮

Pom Kees are very intelligent dogs and they can be trained easily using positive methods of training. Positive reinforcement will go a long way with this dog.

Grooming ✂️

Pom Kees are known as moderate shedders and are non-hypoallergenic. You should brush them at least twice per week. This will remove debris, mats, loose hair and tangles from their coat. This will also help with keeping oils appropriately distributed through their fur.

Bathing should be done as needed, whether it’s once per week, once a month, or once per quarter based on their activities. While you are brushing them, make sure that you are checking their ears and clean them using a solution made for cleaning dogs’ ears and cotton.

You should check their toenails on a weekly basis and trim them when needed, unless they’re keeping at bay with their exercise. Dental cleanings and exams along with brushing their teeth twice per week will help with reducing tooth loss and periodontal disease. One thing that you will love about these dogs is that they don’t drool a lot or have a doggy odor.

Health Conditions❤️

Just like any other type of dog, there are a few health concerns that you should know about with the Pom Kee. These health problems don’t usually show up until your dog is older, and they won’t cause a lot of problems unless they’re not treated.

Minor Conditions
  • Heart defects
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Patellar luxation
  • Sick sinus syndrome
  • Tracheal collapse
Serious Conditions
  • Cataracts
  • Diabetes
  • Glaucoma
  • Patent ductus arteriosus
