Wagmo Pet Insurance Review 2024: Pros, Cons & Verdict

wagmo insurance review hepper

Wagmo is a female-founded company with a female CEO that’s been in business since 2017. Unlike most pet insurance companies, Wagmo’s original focus was on offering standalone pet wellness insurance to help cover the costs of routine care. They now provide traditional accident-and-illness coverage as well.

While most pet insurance companies that have wellness plans do so as an add-on to a standard policy, Wagmo gives you the option of buying only preventative care coverage. This distinction sets them apart from other pet insurance companies and will appeal to owners of healthy pets looking for some help with routine vet bills.

Our Final Verdict

We give Wagmo Pet Insurance a rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars.

About Wagmo Pet Insurance

Wagmo Pet Insurance offers one traditional accident-and-illness policy. Three annual deductible options are available: $250, $500, and $1,000. Once you meet the deductible, Wagmo reimburses up to 100% of covered services.

Wagmo caps lifetime coverage at $100,000, with no other options available. Per-incident caps are limited to $10,000. Wagmo states that they chose these numbers to keep premium costs low while still providing adequate coverage based on their calculations of the average lifetime and per-incident cost of care.

The company offers three Wellness Plan choices: Value, Classic, and Deluxe. For a monthly fee, these plans provide reimbursements on preventative care up to a certain amount yearly ($350, $650, $1,100), depending on which option you pick. The idea is that you’re going to pay for your pet’s yearly exam, shots, and fecal checks anyway; why not get some money back when you do?

Because wellness plans can be purchased independently of the standard insurance plan, Wagmo offers the most appeal for those who like the idea of a preventative care policy but don’t want to spend the money on accident coverage.

Base Policy

Wagmo’s base policy for cats and dogs has a $500 annual deductible, with a 90% reimbursement after the deductible and a $20,000 annual limit. As previously mentioned, there is a $10,000 per incident cap and a $100,000 lifetime cap.

The standard policy covers accidents and illnesses, end-of-life care, cancer, surgeries, and prescription medications. Wellness care is not included in this policy, and exclusions apply. Wagmo does not offer an accident-only policy like other pet insurance companies.

You can pay the full annual premium at checkout or be billed monthly. There’s also a one-time enrollment fee. You must agree to keep your plan for at least 12 months at checkout. Wagmo says this is another tactic to keep costs lower.

Customizations

Coverage

There’s only one type of accident-and-illness plan available from Wagmo. The Wellness plans come in three tiers, which offer progressively more coverage the more expensive they are. For example, the Value plan covers an exam, two shots, one fecal check, and one routine blood work every year. The Deluxe plan covers double the exams and shots, plus a urine check, dental care, grooming, and flea and tick prevention.

Customization

Wagmo provides little in the way of customization when compared to other plans. Annual, lifetime, and per-incident limits are the same for everyone. You can choose between three deductibles and two reimbursement options, 90% or 100%.

Package

Wagmo has a multi-pet discount if you enroll more than one fur baby at a time. If you decide not to enroll in Wellness care when you buy the insurance policy, you can do so later.

Deductibles & Claims

Deductibles reset each year. Once your annual deductible is met, Wagmo will cover 90–100% of the remaining bill, depending on your selection. They are one of the only companies that offer 100% reimbursement.

Wagmo allows you to see any vet that you choose for care. As with nearly every pet insurance company, you’ll need to pay the bill first and then submit a claim for reimbursement. Wagmo has a digital app that helps streamline this process.

To start your claim, upload a picture of your vet bill. Wagmo states that they process and pay Wellness claims within 24 hours. Pet insurance claims can take up to 15 days for processing and payments.

Wagmo has multiple options for you to receive your reimbursement, including a paper check, PayPal, Venmo, or bank transfer.

What Does Wagmo Cover?

Earlier, we discussed some of the basic care covered under a standard Wagmo insurance policy. Because there are three Wellness plans, you’ll find some variation in coverage. This chart gives you an idea of what’s covered under a Classic Wellness plan, the middle-tier option, which will reimburse up to $650 of covered expenses annually.

Coverage Item Annual Limit
Wellness Exam 1 per year
Vaccines 3 per year
Fecal Test 1 per year
Routine Blood Work 1 per year
Urinalysis 1 per year
Flea/Tick/Heartworm Prevention $100 per year
Grooming $100 per year

Here are some specific procedures and conditions covered and not covered under the standard Wagmo accident-and-illness policy.

Covered
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions
  • 50% of prescription medications
  • Ultrasounds
  • Pet ambulance
  • CT Scan
Not Covered
  • Prescription food
  • Hip dysplasia in dogs older than 6
  • More than two foreign body removals in one year
  • Vitamins or supplements
  • Holistic or alternative care
  • Breeding or pregnancy care
  • Spay/neuter surgery

Pre-Existing Conditions

Like all pet insurance policies, Wagmo doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions. The company defines them as any medical condition that occurred or showed symptoms before the pet was enrolled in the policy or during the waiting period.

They also won’t cover issues related to spinal disk disease if previous treatments or clinical signs were noted before enrollment. Wagmo doesn’t cover a new knee injury on one side if there was an earlier, untreated problem with the other leg.

Waiting Periods

For Wellness plans, there’s no waiting period. You can begin using the service as soon as you’re enrolled. However, you can’t submit a bill before you register for reimbursement.

Insurance plans have a 15-day waiting period for accident-and-illness coverage. There is a 30-day waiting period for cancer coverage and 6 months for knee surgeries. After successful knee injury treatment, there is a 6-month waiting period for additional knee problems.

Reviews from Customers

As a newer pet insurance company, Wagmo doesn’t have as many user reviews as more established companies. In fact, that lack of experience is one knock against the company overall.

The most positive comments from users were about Wagmo’s customer service and fast claim processing for Wellness claims. Users report that the company is responsive and generally easy to communicate with. A few people claimed to have the opposite experience, however.

Wellness plan users seem overwhelmingly pleased with the product. Several reported that it paid for itself very quickly regarding reimbursements for care they were paying for anyway. Most experiences seem to support the company’s claim to pay Wellness claims within 24 hours.

Some users wished that the insurance claim and reimbursement process moved faster. Others weren’t happy about their claims being denied, a complaint you’ll find about nearly every pet insurance company, to be honest.

FAQ

Where Is Wagmo Available?

The company’s website states that Wagmo Wellness plans are available in every state but doesn’t mention Washington D.C. or the U.S. territories. Other reviews we found stated that Wagmo was not available in all states, so we suggest trying for a quote with your address to confirm.

How Do You Contact Wagmo Customer Service?

Wagmo features a chat box on the website and in the app that’s available 24/7. You can also contact them via email at any time. They also provide a customer support phone number, but phone support is only available between 10 am-5 pm EST, Monday-Friday.

Why Does Wagmo Cap Lifetime and Incident Coverage?

According to the website, Wagmo only provides one option for the two caps in an effort to keep costs low. They claim that they did the math and found that unlimited lifetime caps were too expensive relative to the chances of a pet needing that much coverage. Compared to many other policies, $100,000 is actually a pretty high lifetime cap.

Several other pet insurance companies, such as Trupanion, have no per-incident caps on coverage. While $10,000 seems like a lot, it is still a low cap that could be a problem if your pet suffers a catastrophic incident.

Our Verdict

Wagmo’s selling point is its standalone Wellness plans. Pet owners who are primarily focused on buying a Wellness plan will find a lot to like here. On the other hand, Wagmo’s pet insurance is not the most comprehensive option. We don’t like the per-incident cap or the lack of customization, although the reimbursement options are excellent.

Wagmo also has some unusual exclusions, particularly for hip dysplasia treatment and alternative therapies, that you won’t find in other policies. Since Wagmo Wellness plans can be purchased individually, one option is to match one of them with an accident-and-illness policy from another company with comprehensive coverage.
