The West Highland White Terrier, also sometimes referred to as the Westie, is a fairly popular dog breed that has an entertaining personality and a strong sense of confidence. The breed has been used to create many different designer dogs—some that are gaining in popularity and others that many people have never heard of. Each has their own unique characteristics, but they all have a few things in common with their West Highland White Terrier parent. Here are 18 West Highland Terrier mixes that you should be aware of!

The 18 West Highland White Terrier Mixes

1. Westie Yorkie

This is one of the most common Westie mixes out there, and they have the confidence of the Westie with the energy of the Yorkshire Terrier. This small mixed breed tends to bark frequently, especially when they get bored or when nobody is around to keep them company. They enjoy spending time with kids and adults alike, but they aren’t prone to sitting on laps all day. Instead, they prefer playing games and participating in social engagements.

2. Westie Chihuahua

Weighing between 5 and 10 pounds when fully grown, the Westie Chihuahua tends to have floppy ears and can have either a short or long coat, depending on which parent’s traits they most take on. Many owners and enthusiasts also refer to these mixed-breed dogs as “Chesties.” These affectionate dogs love their human companions and will take every opportunity to snuggle.

3. Wauzer

This designer dog is the result of breeding the Westie and the Schnauzer together. Wauzers are usually outgoing dogs with friendly personalities and enjoy hanging out with family members and strangers. These active dogs must get outdoors for brisk walks each day to stay happy and healthy. They tend to get along well with kids, though they are not keen on being teased by the little ones.

4. Westie Pug

Known for their hyperactivity, these dogs are best suited for busy families that enjoy spending time outdoors. Westie Pugs are known for being extremely social, so they do well at dog parks and in most public settings. However, they are also known for their high prey drive, so they might not do well in households where cats and smaller animals reside. Early socialization is the key to ensuring good behavior whenever they are out and about.

5. Westie Beagle

These adorable doggies come in a wide variety of coat colors and patterns, including brown, white, cream, brindle, and fawn. They might have floppy ears like their Beagle parent, or they could have pointy ears like their Westie relative. Some have ears that are half and half! Westie Beagles can weigh as much as 25 pounds as adults, making them on the larger side for Westie mixes as a whole. These are friendly dogs, but they like to chase “prey” and should not be trusted off-leash in public places.

6. Silky Terrier Westie

The Silky Terrier Westie mix is an enthusiastic designer dog that holds up the terrier’s reputation when it comes to their energetic temperament. They love nothing more than adventuring outdoors, whether at the beach, the park, or the campground. These independent dogs don’t mind spending time alone at home, but they prefer having someone around to keep them company. This smart mixed breed tends to take well to training.

7. Bostie Terrier

This social dog is a mix between the Boston Terrier and Westie. They go by a few different nicknames, including “Boston Westie” and “Bostie,” depending on what their owners prefer. These dogs weigh between 14 and 20 pounds when they are done growing and have dense coats of fur that can be just about any color. These dogs are social yet independent, energetic yet cuddly, and curious yet cautious.

8. Cairland Terrier

This compact mixed breed combines the muscular build of the Cairn Terrier with the agile limbs of the West Highland White Terrier. These dogs have thick undercoats and fuzzy topcoats, so they require more grooming than the average Westie mix. Their prominent eyebrows give them an animated look, which tends to match their goofy personality. As a confident, independent dog, the Cairland Terrier does not mind spending time on their own, and they’re quite brave when facing new situations.

9. Cavestie

This special mixed breed is a cross between the Cavalier King Charles and the Westie, hence the name. These sturdy little dogs can have either straight or wavy coats that feel soft to the touch. The most common coat colors are black, brown, and white. These dogs are smart but stubborn, which can make training a challenge. However, their loyalty quickly makes up for it.

10. Havanestie

A combination of the Havanese and the West Highland White Terrier, the Havanestie is an active dog but never passes up the opportunity to settle down for affectionate snuggling with their family members. They’re usually good with kids, but their rambunctious behavior can cause accidental injuries when playing with young children. Their playful nature means they will try to turn just about any situation into a game of some kind.

11. Highland Maltese

These dogs are feisty mixed breeds that exude confidence and independence. They like to cuddle and are loyal to their family members, but they tend to be suspicious of strangers, so socialization as puppies is recommended. Like most terriers, this mixed breed tends to have a high prey drive, and they might not get along with other animals in the household. These small dogs are active but don’t need much outdoor time, so they can get along well in both apartment and house settings.

12.Westie Bichon Frise

Weighing around 15 pounds, the Westie Bichon Frise typically has a coat of either white or black fur. This is a lovable mixed breed that most owners consider to be loyal lapdogs. Most have playful personalities that will charm kids and adults alike. These dogs are gentle and patient with kids, making them splendid as family pets. The average Westie Bichon Frise is smart and enjoys learning new skills.

This dog is a mix between the Westie and the Shih Tzu and possesses a balanced mix of playfulness and attentiveness that makes them a joy to spend time with. These are lower-energy dogs compared to most of the mixed breeds on this list. They tend to stay calm while spending time indoors, which they prefer so they can remain the center of attention.

14. Westipoo

Imagine the gracefulness of the Poodle and the intelligence of the West Highland White Terrier all wrapped up into one adorable package, and you’ve got yourself a Westipoo! There are many differences between the parent breeds, so you never know exactly what you’re going to get when it comes to the mix’s personality and temperament. One thing that you can count on is their ability to learn new skills quickly.

15. Scotland Westie Terrier

As the name suggests, this designer dog is a mix between the Scottish Terrier and the Westie. These dogs typically have high energy levels and should get at least 1 hour of exercise each day. These are not particularly social dogs, but they are loyal to their household companions and don’t mind dealing with kids. They typically have wiry hair that is easy to manage and long pointy ears that can make them look excited even when they’re relaxing.

16. Westimo

The American Eskimo and the Westie make utterly adorable babies that grow up with fluffy fur and spunky personalities. Westimos are smart dogs that love to hunt, so they should be expected to have a healthy prey drive even as they age. The typical Westimo is eager to please their human companions, but they demand constant attention. They have moderate grooming needs and high energy levels, making them more suitable for experienced dog owners.

17. Westie Lhasa Apso

This easy-going mixed breed enjoys spending quiet days inside with their human companions. These dogs are loyal but can be possessive, so they must be socialized from a young age if they are expected to interact with strangers and other animals in public settings. They come in various colors and can reach about 20 pounds when fully grown. Westir Lhasa Apso dogs take to training well but do not always listen when it’s time to follow through on obeying commands.

18. Weeranian

The Weeranian is a mix between the West Highland White Terrier and the Pomeranian. This small dog stands at just under 1 foot in height and weighs less than 15 pounds. Weeranians are sweet dogs that would sit in a companion’s lap all day long if they could. These dogs have long hair that may be straight or slightly curly. As a gentle mixed breed, they can do well with families, singles, and seniors alike.
