The cockapoo, a mix between the poodle and the cocker spaniel, is a popular designer dog breed. They are beloved for their cute features as much as their lovable personalities. There are plenty of cockapoo colors to choose from, including the lovely whiter cockapoo.

If you are considering bringing a white cockapoo into your home or own one and want to learn more, this article will cover the facts, origin, and history of the white cockapoo.

The Earliest Records of White Cockapoos in History

Cockapoos are among the earliest designer dog breeds. This breed was established in the United States in the 1960s and was accidentally created. However, the result was so enamored that many people devoted themselves to the cockapoo. The dog’s keen intelligence, sweet demeanor, and adorable appearance won over many hearts and led to the intentional breeding of cockapoos.

Although it is difficult to find records of the first white cockapoo, it is safe to assume that it has been around nearly as long as the cockapoo itself. White cockapoos are not difficult to breed, and they are one of the most common cockapoo colors. The white cockapoo has likely been around for a long time.

How White Cockapoos Gained Popularity

After people began to breed cockapoos intentionally, the breed’s popularity only grew. The cockapoo has remained a popular dog ever since, and though it is not considered an official breed recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), devotees of the cockapoo are working on upgrading its status.

White cockapoos are one of the most common cockapoo colors, alongside the black cockapoo. Since they are among the easiest cockapoo colors to find, they are, by default, very popular. However, the white coat is not famous just because it is common. Many pet parents deliberately seek out white cockapoos and find their coats’ purity charming.

Formal Recognition of the Poodle and the Cocker Spaniel

As beloved as the cockapoo is, it has sadly not been officially recognized by the AKC. However, its two ancestors were recognized long ago.

The cocker spaniel was recognized in 1878. It is known for its jolly disposition and mischievous personality. It is an incredibly popular breed, just as it was when the cockapoo was first bred.

The poodle was recognized in 1887, and it has been a popular dog for a long time. The three size varieties of poodles are the standard, the miniature, and the toy poodle. No matter what size, these dogs are proud, intelligent, and energetic.

Although the cockapoo has not yet been officially recognized, there are cockapoo clubs that have worked to standardize the breed and advocate for its official recognition.

Top 4 Unique Facts About White Cockapoos

1. The Size Can Vary Drastically

Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes have significant variations. When it comes to size, most often, cockapoos are medium-sized dogs. They weigh about 15 pounds and are around 14 inches tall. However, there can be some drastic size variations.

For example, the offspring of a standard poodle (also called a maxi cockapoo) can weigh nearly 65 pounds. That is a lot heavier than the standard cockapoo! On the other hand, some teacup cockapoos are known to be as tiny as 2 pounds.

2. A Cockapoo’s Coat May Vary

Of course, the color of a cockapoo will vary depending on genetics. But that’s not all; the texture of a cockapoo’s coat may also vary.

Very few things about a cockapoo’s coat can be guaranteed. A cockapoo may have a straight, wavy, or curly coat. Likewise, the length can range from short to long. Typically, cockapoos do not shed very much, which is also not a guarantee.

A lot of the variation depends on which parent’s traits are most dominant: the poodle genes or the cocker spaniel genes.

3. There Are Plenty of Other Colors to Choose From

The white cockapoo is adorable, but it is far from the only cockapoo color option. Some options include black, red, tan, brown, sable, blonde, or combinations of these colors.

4. Cockapoos Shed Very Little

Cockapoos, most often, do not shed much. That is similar to the poodle, who rarely sheds. For this reason, cockapoos are often a good choice of pet for people with dog allergies.

However, it should be noted that there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog, so even a cockapoo cannot guarantee that someone with allergies won’t have a reaction. If the cocker spaniel’s traits are more prevalent regarding the hair, the cockapoo will experience more shedding.

Does the White Cockapoo Make a Good Pet?

Cockapoos are known for their excellent temperaments. They are affectionate, sweet dogs that love to be around their people. Cockapoos hate to be alone and can even develop separation anxiety if they are kept apart from their loved ones for too long, so make sure that you will be able to provide for your cockapoo’s social needs. They are also incredibly intelligent and eager to learn, although they can quickly get up to mischief if they are not adequately trained.

For their grooming needs, the cockapoo needs to be brushed regularly. Although their coat is not the same as the poodle, it still requires regular care to ensure that no mats are formed. A cockapoo’s ears should be inspected weekly to ensure that cleaning isn’t needed, and its nails should be clipped regularly.

Cockapoos can live well in apartments but will require daily exercise. If you live in an apartment but can provide energy outlets for your dog, a cockapoo could find itself right at home with you.
