There are few creatures more lovable than dogs. We enjoy their companionship, love, and entertainment. Many dog owners, however, find it frustrating when their dogs poop and walk at the same time. Dog mess is spread over a much larger area on the ground, making cleanup more complicated. Every dog owner has experienced their dog walking and pooping at the same time, and some people find it amusing.

Here are some reasons why your dog may be pooping and walking at the same time.

The 10 Reasons Your Dog Might Walk and Poop

1. An Effective Remedy for Constipation

Have you ever watched your dog walk around in circles before they pop a squat? Walking and pooping at the same time could mean your dog is constipated. Movement can also stimulate a dog’s bowels, so they might poop if their walk has gotten their intestines moving. That’s why so many dogs relieve themselves on their morning walks. They’re walking so they can eliminate the compacted stool as quickly as possible.

2. A Symptom Of Muscle Weakness Or Pain

This is one of the more troubling reasons for this behavior. Dogs’ muscles deteriorate as they age and become less active. It sets up a vicious cycle that weakens their muscles further. Muscle pain and general weakness can make it difficult to maintain a squat for an extended period of time. It can be challenging, particularly for elderly dogs, to get down into that squatted position. Pooping while walking may be more comfortable for older dogs.

Make sure you pay attention to your dog’s body signals. If their legs are shaking or they are grimacing in pain, muscle atrophy may be to blame. In younger dogs, torn ligaments, sprains, and paw injuries may also play a role. These issues can be treated by your vet with special diets, joint supplements, and steroids providing some relief. You may also be advised to encourage your dog to exercise more or to use a support sling to aid in potty training.

3. Lengthy, Distended Feces

Sometimes, it’s the stool itself that is the source of trouble. When they try to expel a really long poop, dogs will shuffle. The shuffling motion is your dog’s attempt to loosen the poop. There are many reasons why the stool becomes so long as to necessitate an ungainly teetering stance. The same thing happens if the stool gets caught in their hind fur on its way out.

The other common cause is that your long-haired dog is shedding and grooming itself and swallowing lots of fur. The swallowed hair then binds their feces together, resulting in massive clumps of poo. The same thing can happen if your dog eats long grass as a result of stomach pains. Whatever the case may be, this is an issue that usually disappears when the bowel movement is over and your dog’s stool returns to normal.

4. Lack Of Bowel Control

It is common for your dog to have difficulty controlling their bowel movements when they are sick or have a serious medical condition. Dogs with parvo, parasites, and other illnesses are prone to this problem. An injury, atrophy of the bowel muscles, or a digestive illness may have trouble with bowel incontinence. If this is the case, in addition to pooping while walking, your dog might have more accidents in your home.

Take action immediately because it could be a sign of a serious problem. Your veterinarian can diagnose the issue, come up with treatment options, and offer potential solutions.

5. Spreading Their Scent

In order to mark their territory, dogs spread their scent through urine and feces. The best way for them to get maximum coverage is to walk and poop at the same time. Dogs have anal glands that contribute a lot to their distinct smell and walking releases more fluid from the anal glands. A walk helps your dog secrete scents that tell other dogs where they’ve been, so walking while pooping can be a way for them to transcend the call of nature.

6. Sticking to a Bad Habit

Some of this strange behavior is left over from your dog’s puppyhood. Growing puppies have trouble controlling their bladders and bowels. Most puppies have accidents, and they may try to remedy the situation by moving to the correct toilet area during a poop. An important part of potty training is teaching your dog how to be continent.

However, some dogs are not taught good habits. While they might learn how to contain their bowels until they’re outside, letting go while they’re walking can be more difficult to let go of. It can be ended with just a little training, however.

7. Poor Nutrition

Poor ingredients will inevitably cause digestive problems for your dog. Chronic constipation and diarrhea are two conditions that can be caused by cheap fillers and indigestible carbohydrates. Some budget brands contain substances that shouldn’t be in a canine diet. These additives, preservatives, and binders keep costs down for the manufacturer but ultimately cause trouble for your pooch.

It’s impossible for your dog to maintain control over their bowels if it has diarrhea, and as a result, you might notice your dog leaking poop at times when their nutrition is off. If this happens regularly, you should choose a product with wholesome ingredients and plenty of fiber to help your dog’s system recover. If you don’t see an improvement, follow up with your vet.

8. Allergic Reactions & Gastrointestinal Discomfort

If your dog has food sensitivities, its strange behavior may be caused by the way its body responds to allergens. In case your dog eats dog food that triggers their allergies, they may suffer from chronic diarrhea and constipation. Taking your dog to the vet for an allergy test will help you figure out what’s causing it and what to avoid. In addition, you should purchase probiotic foods for your dog, so they don’t have stomach problems all the time.

9. Anxiety

It is possible that your dog is walking and pooping due to anxiety because, when nature calls, they do not feel comfortable in their environment. Perhaps you’re in a new part of the neighborhood, or maybe there are strangers nearby. Dogs will do their best to complete their task in uncomfortable surroundings. All animals feel vulnerable while defecating because it leaves them momentarily more vulnerable to attack.

Walking while pooping is your dog’s attempt to cut back on the amount of time they feel vulnerable. They’ll sometimes walk while they poop to get to a place they know, is more private, or they feel more comfortable in.

10. Excitement

On the other hand, there are overexcited dogs who get hyper when going for a walk. They are just happy to be outside, and their emotions take over. Suddenly, your dog starts galloping across the grass while pooping. It’s a funny scene, and it’s not dangerous. You can calm your dog down by walking them in familiar places before pottying. Once they’re done, take them somewhere exciting.

How Do I Stop My Dog From Walking While Pooping?

One thing that you can do is to put them on a leash while they are going to the bathroom. This will help to keep them from walking away and keeping them in one spot will also help you to clean up the mess easier.

How Can I Train My Dog to Stand Still While Pooping?

One way is to use positive reinforcement, such as rewarding your dog when they poop in the appropriate place. This could involve giving the dog a treat or providing verbal praise. You can also use commands, such as telling your dog to “stay” or “wait” until they are done pooping.

Why Won’t My Dog Poop All At Once?

For one, your dog may be constipated. This means that the dog’s feces are dry and hard, making them difficult to pass. In addition, the dog’s intestines may be full of gas, which can also make it difficult to poop. Finally, the dog may simply be holding it in because it doesn’t want to go outside in the cold or rain.

Why Does My Dog Take a Poop Inside My House Minutes After I Walk Them?

Your dog may have felt the need to relieve itself shortly after being walked because it had not done so during the walk. Another possibility is that the dog is experiencing a lack of bowel control, which could be caused by various factors such as old age, dietary changes, or underlying health conditions. A different possibility is that the dog is experiencing anxiety or excitement after being walked, which may lead them to soil their surroundings as a way of expressing their anxieties.

Why Does My Dog Walk in Circles While Pooping?

There is no one answer to this question as there can be many reasons why a dog may walk in circles while pooping. Some of the reasons could include that the dog is trying to create a comfortable space in which to poop, that it is uncomfortable doing its business out in the open, or that they are trying to cover up their feces with dirt or grass. In some cases, a dog may also walk in circles because they have worms and are trying to get rid of them.

Parasitic worms can cause a dog to feel unwell and to have an upset stomach, which may result in the dog walking in circles while trying to poop. Other potential explanations for the behavior include gastrointestinal issues such as inflammation or blockages, anxiety or excitement caused by being outdoors, or pain from an injury or other medical condition.

Why Does My Dog Poop Standing Up?

One reason is that the dog might not be able to squat properly because of an injury or because of a genetic defect. Another reason is that the dog might feel safer doing its business this way since it can keep a better eye on its surroundings.

Why Does My Dog Walk While Peeing?

One reason could be that it is a habit that they have formed and is difficult to break. Another reason could be that the dog is trying to spread their urine over a large surface area in order to mark their territory. Walking while they are peeing also allows the dog to keep an eye on their environment and make sure that everything is okay.

Why Did My Dog Poop On My Bed While I Was Sleeping?

One possibility is that your dog is trying to get your attention. Dogs often use eliminatory communication as a way to communicate their needs to their owners. So, if your dog is trying to tell you that he needs to go outside to pee or poop, he may resort to doing so on your bed. Alternatively, your dog may have been feeling anxious or stressed and felt like this was the only way to get your attention.

Conclusion

In most cases, your dog’s tendency to walk and poop at the same time is not a significant cause for concern. It’s not a major issue if it doesn’t happen too often, but chronic walking while pooping may indicate health-related issues that require attention.

Visiting your veterinarian may lead to a recommendation of treatment that addresses the cause of the behavior and provides relief and comfort when the urge arises.
