Equipment You Will Need For A 10 Gallon Tank
For a basic 10-gallon fish tank, there are a number of things that you will need in order to take proper care of your fish and to keep them happy too.
Let’s talk about the most crucial things you will need for your 10-gallon tank.
A Filtration Unit
The first thing you will need for your 10 gallon aquarium is a small filtration unit. Now, 10 gallon aquariums don’t have too much room to spare, you will want a small filtration unit, preferably a hang on back model that won’t eat up space inside of the aquarium (we have reviewed our favorite filters here) or even a internal filter.
As long as the filter is able to handle about 30 gallons of water per hour, it should be good enough, plus it should also engage in all 3 major forms of filtration.
You will definitely need some aquarium lights for your 10-gallon fish tank. You need to be able to recreate a natural outdoor setting that fish are used to.
So, having a light that can mimic both night and daytime conditions is pretty important. If you have lots of plants in your fish tank, you will also want something that can help plants grow.
Now, this is not always going to be a requirement, as it does depend on the regular ambient temperature where you live, plus the requirements of the fish and the plants you have in your fish tank.
However, if you want to house any kind of tropical fish, chances are that you will need a heater.
You really do not want to have a fish tank that has a bare bottom, so you will need some kind of substrate.
The type and color of substrate you get will depend on the fish and the plants you are planning to keep.
Some fish and some plants like sand as substrate whereas others prefer gravel. You need to do some research before making a choice here (we have covered a good buyers guide here).
Plants & Decoration
No aquarium is complete without some good aquarium plants. Sure, you can go with plastic as they are easy to maintain, but real live plants help to oxygenate and filter the water, they can grow into carpets (depending on the plant), and they provide great hiding spaces for fish too, and sometimes may even serve as nourishment.
Most fish also prefer to have some caves and driftwood around, places they can hide and swim through.
Commonly Asked Questions
What Is The Best 10-Gallon Aquarium?
In our opinion, the best 10-gallon option is the Marina LED Aquarium Kit, with the main reason being that it comes with almost everything you need to get started, even a water conditioner.
It’s a pretty decent-looking fish tank, one made of real tempered glass, so you know it’s quite durable. Moreover, this kit also comes complete with a hood, complete with a built-in LED light system, and it comes with a pretty decent little filtration unit too. It also comes with a bit of fish food to get you started.
What Fish Should I Put In A 10 Gallon Fish Tank?
When it comes to a 10-gallon tank, you are a little limited in terms of the type of fish you can put in there.
As you will see from the next question below, 10 gallons is not all that much space, all things considered.
Most fish do require a decent amount of space, and 10 gallons is a bit limited. Sure, it’s fine for a few small fish or 1 medium size fish, but not much more.
Here are some of the best fish for 10-gallon fish tanks out there right now.
- Cory Catfish
- Neon Tetra
- Dwarf Gourami
- Fancy Guppy
- Betta Fish
- Zebra Danio
- Otocinclus catfish
- Ghost Shrimp
How Many Fish Can You Put In A 10-Gallon Fish Tank?
Well, a general rule of thumb here is that you need around 1 gallon of space for every 1 inch of fish present in the aquarium.
In other words, if the fish are fairly small, no more than 1 inches long, you could fit 10 small fish in a 10-gallon tank. For instance, neon tetras grow to roughly 1.75 inches in size, so if we do the math here, this would mean that you could fit roughly 6 neon tetras in a 10-gallon fish tank.
Just keep the rule of thumb in mind, that each inch of fish requires roughly a gallon of water. Based on this, you can then calculate how many of a specific type of fish you can fit in a 10-gallon fish tank.
How Often Do You Clean A 10 Gallon Fish Tank?
When it comes down to it, smaller aquariums, especially when heavily stocked, might actually require more maintenance and cleaning than in a larger tank.
If you have a 10-gallon tank that is fully stocked, you need to clean it around once per week. In such a small fish tank, waste and other unwanted substances will build up pretty quickly.
So, this means using the right tools to clean the glass, vacuum or wash the substrate, clean the filtration components, and do a water change too, anywhere from 15 to 30% per week.
10-Gallon Tank Aquascape Tips?
Here are some little tips for you to follow for your aquarium and your 10-gallon aquarium fish, just to make it look nice and keep everybody comfy.
- You will want to go with the small stuff, by which we mean plants that won’t grow huge. Yes, you do want to add some live plants to the mix, as they do come with lots of benefits, but be sure that they are plants that don’t grow too fast and remain quite small, as you don’t want huge plants eating up space.
- If you do go for larger plants, place them only in the background so they don’t take up space in the center or front of the tank. For a small 10-gallon fish tank, however, it is recommended to go with short carpeting plants.
- Although you do want to add some driftwood and rocks, as well as caves and other decorations to your 10-gallon fish tank, make sure that they don’t take up an insane amount of space.
- For a 10-gallon fish tank, you do also need substrate, but not too much. Around 1 to 1.5 inches should do fine. If you have a much thicker layer of substrate, it’s just going to take up space and require more cleaning too.
- In terms of a filter for your 10-gallon fish tank, you should go with a hang-on-back filter or some other kind of external filter. Even filters for small aquariums can actually be quite large, so it’s preferable to have the majority of the unit on the exterior of the fish tank.
There are many different 10-gallon fish tanks out there (the Marina Kit is our top pick), and all of them have little differences which you should be aware of. If you are looking for a great 10-gallon fish tank, we would definitely recommend one of the ten above options, most of which come with all the necessary parts so you can get started with your very own aquarium.
