  • The 9 Best Dog Bones for Puppies

    1. Nylabone Healthy Puppy Chew Treats – Best Overall

Nylabone Healthy Edibles Longer Lasting Puppy Turkey & Sweet Potato Flavor Dog Bone Treats

The Nylabone Healthy Edibles Puppy Chew Treats are our choice for the best overall dog bones for puppies. These bones come in several flavors, including turkey and sweet potato, and lamb and apple, are specifically designed for puppies. These small bones have DHA omega-3 fatty acid that helps with brain and eye development, and they come in four or eight packs.

Our puppies loved these bones, but you should be aware that they are tiny and only for the smallest dogs. They don’t last long. Our puppies had them devoured in just a few minutes.

    • 8 per pack
    • DHA omega
    • Several flavors
    • Don’t last long
    • Small puppies

    2. Hartz Chew ‘n Clean Dog Chew Toy – Best Value

The Hartz Chew ‘n Clean 3270014808 Dog Chew Toy is our choice for the best value, and we think you will agree that these are the best dog bones for puppies for the money. This puppy bone is both a toy and a treat. It has a durable nylon shell, and the center has a bacon-flavored treat. The treat contains an ingredient called DentaShield that helps reduce plaque and tartar build-up, which can help improve your dog’s breath.

The downside to this brand is that it’s not for strong chewers. Some dogs will be able to bite through the durable nylon shell.

    • Chew toy and treat
    • Durable nylon shell
    • Contains DentaShield

    3. Jack&Pup Marrow Bone Treats – Premium Choice

The Jack&Pup Roasted Beef Marrow Bone Treats is our premium choice dog bones for puppies. These bones are 100% natural and obtained from grass-fed beef cattle. The marrow contains no additives but has plenty of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. It’s guaranteed to be fully digestible and won’t cause any side effects. Once your pet eats all of the marrow, you can often refill the bone with peanut butter to extend the life and enjoyment of this brand.

Unfortunately, this brand is costly and can set you back quite a bit over time. These treats are also massive and small puppies might have a difficult time carrying them around.

    • 100% natural ingredients
    • Omega-3
    • Fully digestible
    • Can refill
    • Expensive
    • Heavy

    4. Dingo Mini Bones

The Dingo P-25002 Mini Bones are small treat bones made for puppies. The bones use real chicken and premium grade rawhide that provides a natural dental cleaner for your pet. There are no fillers or artificial binders in these bones, and each one has plenty of protein. The resealable package contains 35 bones to keep your puppy busy for weeks.

What we don’t like about this brand is that rawhide has proved to be a significant choking hazard for dogs. Even with supervision, we were nervous about allowing our puppies to eat these treats because of the report. They also cost a lot, but you get a lot.

    • Real chicken and premium rawhide
    • No fillers
    • Resealable bag
    • Rawhide can be a choking hazard
    • High cost

    5. Good Fun Triple Flavor Chews

The Good Fun pbc-82226 Triple Flavor Chews feature a blend of beef, pork, and chicken. The bones have rawhide ends that promote dental health. The bones are small and are a perfect size for a puppy. These bones are also high in protein, which will help promote muscle growth.

What we didn’t like about the Triple Flavor Chews was the rawhide ingredient. Out of the five puppies we have, only two would chew on these bones, and it gave them gas.

    • Beef, pork, and chicken
    • Promotes dental health
    • Contains rawhide
    • Some puppies don’t like
    • May cause gas

    6. KONG Puppy Goodie Bone

The KONG KP31 Puppy Goodie Bone is a small rubber dog bone for puppies. This bone uses a special rubber that can help soothe teething gums. The bone contains spots on each end that you can fill with treats or peanut butter to encourage your pet to play longer.

We found the Puppy Goodie Bone to be very durable, and it made a perfect doggy tug of war toy. The downside is that aggressive chewers can still chew it up quickly, and even though it’s available in two colors, there is no way to choose which color you get.

    • Soothes teething gums
    • Fillable
    • Durable
    • Can’t pick the color
    • Not for aggressive chewers

    7. Pet Qwerks BBS3 BarkBone

    Pet Qwerks

The Pet Qwerks BBS3 BarkBone is a nylon bone for puppies. The nylon is injected with an allergen-free peanut butter flavor and contains no other chemicals or preservatives. It’s lightweight and formed into the shape of a stick to entice your pets to play.

We didn’t like that there is no nutritional value in this bone at all, and it’s more of a toy. Once your pet chews off the ends, we found that it splinters and breaks off in pieces and can make quite a mess. Once it starts breaking up, there is a danger that your pets will eat it.

    • Peanut butter flavor
    • No chemicals or preservatives
    • Stick shaped
    • Splinters and breaks into small pieces
    • No nutritional value

    8. Raw Paws Compressed Rawhide Bones

    Raw Paws Dog Rawhide Sticks

The Raw Paws Pet Compressed Rawhide Bones features a single ingredient: 100% compressed rawhide. Compressed rawhide is safer than regular rawhide and is very high in protein, which will help your puppy grow and build lean muscle.

The downside to these bones is that they are relatively large, and several puppy breeds might have a difficult time chewing on them. When we gave these to our dogs, they were able to eat them pretty quickly, so we needed to look for something that would take them a bit longer.

    • Single-ingredient
    • Compressed rawhide
    • High protein
    • Big
    • Consumed quickly

    9. N-Bone Pupper Nutter

The N-Bone 201189 Pupper Nutter is the last dog bone for puppies on our list. This brand uses compressed brown rice and other natural ingredients to form the bone. It helps to clean teeth and provides a fresher breath.

The primary downside to these treats is that they only last a few minutes. Our puppies had them gone faster than any other brand on this list. We don’t want to give them more because it contains garlic, which is harmful to dogs. It seemed strange that N-Bone would knowingly include a potentially dangerous ingredient. We also thought that these bones are a little too large for puppies and are better suited to larger dogs.

    • Cleans teeth
    • Freshens breath
    • Contains garlic
    • Doesn’t last

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Dog Bones for Puppies

Let’s take a look at some of the things that are important to consider when purchasing a puppy bone.

If the bone you purchase is a real bone, then the ingredients are likely going to be all-natural, but there are many bones made from compressing many ingredients together, and with these, you need to worry about what’s in them. Dog bones can be rawhide, compressed rice, and even plastic. If you purchase an edible one, you need to make sure there are no harmful chemicals or preservatives in the bone.

When purchasing a bone that contains compressed ingredients, we recommend looking for brands that fortify their bones with omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acid helps promote brain development and eye development. Omega-3 can also go by the name of DHA.

Rawhide bones are extremely popular, and dogs have been chewing on them for decades. The tough skin works wonders for cleaning teeth, and it gives your pet something to chew on that lasts longer than most other things. However, studies have recently shown that rawhide bones can present a significant choking hazard to your pet. Some dogs tend to break off large pieces of rawhide and swallow them where they can get stuck in the esophagus and cause your dog to choke. Some large pieces can also clog the intestinal tract of your pet, which will require expensive medical treatments.

We recommend only giving your pet rawhide under very close supervision and discarding any rawhide that looks like it’s getting worn.

    Compressed Rawhide

Compressed rawhide is small pieces of rawhide that are pressed together and dried to form a bone. This process makes the rawhide much safer for your pet, but it removes the durability. Compressed rawhide bones don’t last nearly as long as regular rawhide, but they are still an excellent source of protein and perfect for cleaning teeth.

The weight of the bone is going to be a significant concern when purchasing a puppy bone because your pet will need to pick it up and carry it around. They will also need to chew on it comfortably, and a large, dense bone can get in the way.

We recommend getting a bone that fits nicely in your pet’s mouth and light enough for them to carry without struggling.

Size often goes hand in hand with weight, and it bears mentioning again that you want a bone that your puppy can easily work with and carry to their favorite spots.

    Natural vs. Synthetic

While many dog bones are real bone, there are plenty of synthetic brands that either make bones out of compressed ingredients, or rubber or plastic. Natural bones are sturdy and durable while also supplying important nutrition in the marrow. Dogs naturally desire real bones.

Synthetic bones offer opportunities to improve the bone’s nutritional value, as well as the flavor. You can purchase bones in many different flavors, and with all kinds of dietary advantages.

Plastic and rubber bones are superior teeth cleaners, and they tend to be much more durable than the real thing and can often last for years. Many of these bones come infused with flavor or you can fill them with treats. These bones are great for games of fetch and tug of war, and it helps to get out their chewing behavior. Synthetic bones also tend to be softer than real bones and present less danger to your pet’s teeth.

Durability is a primary concern because you don’t want your pet to go through the bones too quickly. Especially if it’s something that’s supposed to keep them busy for a while. Compressed ingredient bones will go the fastest along with compressed rawhide bones.

Artificial rubber bones and real rawhide bones will last the longest. We recommend the rubber or plastic when you need durability because many of these bones allow inserting your treats. These treats can change over time as your dog’s tastes and requirements change.
