How Fast Can a Pomeranian Run? The Impressive Answer!

Pomeranian Training

Pomeranians can run at 15 to 20 miles per hour, which is extremely fast for such a small dog. They love to run and play and can be surprisingly agile. Pomeranians can climb, jump, and twist in the air surprisingly easily. They are very active and love going on walks and hikes.

The fastest Pomeranian can run at a speed of 22.90 miles per hour. Compared to Usain Bolt’s 28 miles per hour, this is quite impressive for such a small breed.

Although Pomeranians run fast and have plenty of energy, they’re more likely to enjoy leisurely walks than long runs. It doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy running. However, they cannot do it long term.

Instead, you can take them along on shorter jogs or play fun games that involve running, such as fetch. If you want to take your Pomeranian on a longer run, make sure you gradually increase the distance so they don’t overwork themselves.

Is Running Important for Pomeranians?

Pomeranians can run pretty fast, but it’s not the only way to get their daily dose of exercise. The breed needs sufficient physical activity daily or gets cranky and aggressive.

However, their small stature and tiny legs mean they tire easily if they run for too long. A mile-long run may be sufficient for some Pomeranians. Any more than that can exhaust your four-legged buddy.

You should provide your Pomeranian with some form of aerobic activity every day. Whether running in the park, playing fetch or frisbee, or going for a long walk, it’s essential to ensure your pup gets ample exercise. Doing so will help:

  • Maintain your furry friend’s weight
  • Keep their bones strong
  • Release energy built up in their bodies
  • Prevent boredom, which could lead to destructive behavior

Walking can be an excellent way for Pomeranians to bond with their owners. Since they’re social dogs, they’ll also make friends in the park.

Why Do Pomeranians Run in Circles?

If you own a Pomeranian, you’ve likely noticed that they have an unusual tendency to run in circles. Their behavior is a type of canine compulsive disorder (CCD) characterized by repetitive, obsessive behaviors that seem to have no purpose.

In some cases, Pomeranians will trace the same route again and again. Others may simply stand still and spin in circles.

While the exact cause of this behavior has not been identified, there are several theories as to why Pomeranians run in circles. However, it’s not something to be concerned about.

Should You Walk Your Pomeranian With Other Dogs?

If you have a larger breed, it’s best not to take your Pomeranian on a walk with them. The Pomeranian is aware of its smaller stride. It will try to cover the same distance as the larger dog but will have to work harder to cover the same ground.

As a result, your little dog will tire quickly. American Kennel Club experts suggest you walk your big and small breed dogs separately. In this way, both dogs will get the exercise they need without wearing themselves out.

Tips to Keep Your Pomeranian Safe During a Walk

Being a small breed, Pomeranians are at risk of being injured or attacked by larger dogs and wildlife. Here are some tips to keep your little dog safe during walks:

  • Put an ID tag on your pup so it can be identified should it wander off or get lost.
  • Make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations. Check with your veterinarian about the best flea, tick, and heartworm prevention for your pet.
  • Stay on the designated paths and trails when walking with your pup, and avoid entering areas populated by wild animals.
  • Use a leash to keep your pup close by your side.
  • Be careful when crossing roads and streets, as cars cannot always see a small dog.

Pomeranian vs. Other Breeds: Comparison Table

Whippet 35 miles per hour
Greyhound 45 miles per hour

Divider 7Conclusion

It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Pomeranians are pretty fast for their small size. They should have an outdoor activity each day, but running can tire them quickly since they cannot run long distances like most large breeds.

The best way to ensure your Pomeranian gets the exercise it needs without overworking itself is to take them on shorter jogs or play games that involve running, such as fetch.
