Scottish Terriers are adorable dogs with a wide independent streak and an incredible amount of loyalty to their preferred people. If you’ve seen a Scottish Terrier, you know these pups have double-layered coats that grow quickly and get quite long. This means these dogs require constant grooming to keep their coats looking neat and maintained. For pets, this might be as much as weekly haircuts; for show dogs, it could be more often.

If you’re looking for haircut ideas for your Scottish Terrier, you’ll find a few out there. All of them are absolutely adorable, though, so whichever one you pick, it’s guaranteed your pet will look cuter than ever! Take a look at these five adorable Scottish Terrier haircuts to find the best one for your pet.

The 5 Scottish Terrier Haircuts

Take a look at these absolutely adorable and sweet haircut ideas for your Scottish Terrier. Pick just one favorite or rotate through them (since you’ll be getting your pup’s hair cut often!).

1. Puppy Cut

You’ll find a puppy cut on many small breed dogs and can be given to your pet whether it’s a puppy or not! With this, your dog’s coat on the legs and body is trimmed relatively short, so it’s only 1–1 ½ inches in length. This makes it much easier to brush your Scottish Terrier’s coat on the reg and means that when your pup is outside playing, its coat won’t pick up as much dirt and debris (and that means fewer baths). For the face, most breeds will be trimmed so it looks round. However, this isn’t the best look for the Scottie, so you might want to keep the fur on your pet’s head as is but have the groomer trim it just a touch.

2. Schnauzer Cut

Wait, a Schnauzer cut on a Scottish Terrier? Yep! The Schnauzer cut is simply the traditional look for that breed, but the style will look equally adorable on your Scottie. With this cut, the hair on the face is cut short, minus the “beard,” which is left long. Then, the underbelly and body of your pup will be cut short as well. However, the fur on the legs is left just a bit longer than the hair on the body (but not as long as the beard on the face), making it medium-length. The whole look is quite snazzy!

3. Scottie Cut

If your Scottish Terrier isn’t a show dog, but you’d still love to have them resemble one, you can go with the regular Scottie cut. This cut has the appearance of the cut required for show dogs but requires much less work. With the Scottie cut, your pet’s head will be kept as is with bushy eyebrows and a beard (though the eyebrows will be trimmed enough that your dog is able to see). Then, the fur on the legs and lower body is cut a bit shorter than the traditional show cut, so you’ll have an easier time with daily grooming.

4. Show Cut

The show cut is the cut for Scottish Terriers that are shown in the ring, and it requires quite a bit of work as the outercoat on your dog will need to be stripped by hand (clipping isn’t allowed because it can soften the outercoat). So, you’ll need to find a groomer that knows what they’re doing with this haircut. For the rest of the haircut, you’ll be getting the traditional Scottie outline. That means bushy eyebrows and the hair on the legs, lower body, and beard being kept long. The hair on your dog’s body can also be softer than the outer coat (but it should never be fluffy).

5. Summer Cut

You’re probably familiar with the summer cut, as it’s popular for lots of dog breeds when the weather is warm. This is one of the most adorable cuts there is and will keep your pup cool during the summer. The coat on the legs and body is cut to about a ½ inch or so, with the face being trimmed to however you prefer it. This is another cut that makes grooming a breeze, with the bonus of your dog not overheating due to its double-layered coat!

Can I Cut My Scottish Terrier’s Hair Myself?

If you feel up to it, you definitely can cut your dog’s hair yourself. It’ll be quite a bit of work, though, and depending on the hairstyle you want to go with, you might need a professional groomer (especially for a show cut). But for many of these hairstyles, you can do the work yourself.

You can find multi-step instructions that walk you through everything you need to know, from the number of blades to use to exactly how to move that blade through your pet’s hair. Or you can look for more generalized instructions on how to properly clip and groom your Scottie. Find what works best for you and your pet, and remember that learning to groom a dog takes practice and time!
