The Yorkie Pomeranian mix is a scruffy yet cute little dog standing between 6 and 10 inches tall and weighing in at no more than 7 pounds. They have a wonderful mix of their parent’s characteristics that helps balance their personalities. For instance, these pooches have the independence of the Pomeranian, but they also possess the affectionate side that most Yorkshire Terriers have. This typically results in a loving hybrid dog that doesn’t mind being left to their own devices occasionally.

This mixed breed enjoys spending time with their human family members, but they don’t tolerate the antics of young children very well. It can take them a while to warm up to strangers, and they may take a protective stance until familiarity and trust are built. They will happily live with other animals but wouldn’t mind being an only pet.

When it comes to spunk, these little dogs have plenty of it. They don’t spend much of their time relaxing and instead, opt to play and explore during their waking hours. They don’t require a fenced yard to thrive, but they do expect outdoor time daily. There is much to learn about this adorably tiny mixed dog breed, so let us explore more.

3 Little-Known Facts About the Yorkie Pomeranian Mix

1. They have a few nicknames.

This mixed breed goes by a few different names, including the Yorkie-Pom, the Yoranian, and the Yorkshire Pom. Don’t be surprised if you hear new nicknames as time goes on, as these lively dogs continue to inspire owners to come up with new ways of referring to them.

2. They are easy to train.

The Yorkshire Terrier is known for being too impatient to easily train. The Pomeranian’s independence and stubbornness tend to make training tough. However, the Yorkie Pomeranian isn’t too impatient or stubborn to train. Their intelligence mixed with their parent’s characteristics makes them easy enough for even beginners to train.

3. They can work as service dogs.

Like both their Yorkshire Terrier and Pomeranian parents, this mixed breed can work as service dogs. More specifically, they could be trained to detect seizures and other medical problems. They do need special training to become effective as a service dog, but their natural tendencies should help ensure that training is a success.

Temperament & Intelligence of the Yorkie Pomeranian Mix 🧠

These small dogs have big personalities that can’t be ignored. They love being the center of attention at home and will quickly become attached to their family members. They are protective and wary of strangers, so they should start socializing with people outside of the family from the time that they are puppies to understand how they should interact in public or when meeting strangers at home.

The Yorkie Pomeranian mix is curious and active, so they need toys to play with while spending time indoors. They don’t need a fenced yard, but they do need the opportunity to get outdoors for exercise regularly. These pooches don’t enjoy being left alone at home often, so someone should always be around the house with them or they should be allowed to travel with family members when possible.

Are Yorkie Poms Good for Families? 🏡

The Yorkie Pomeranian mix is a great family dog. They become extremely attached to their family members and will do anything to protect them. However, they should always be supervised when spending time with younger children. Kids who like to tease dogs or pull on tails and ears could end up getting nipped. Also, these dogs are so small that kids could easily injure them during play.

Any child spending time with these dogs should be taught how to safely interact with them to minimize any risk of injury. The Yorkie-Pom does extremely well with older kids, adults, and seniors. They do best in a relaxed household that isn’t full of commotion. A great deal of activity in the house can lead to an overzealous or injured dog.

Do Yorkie Poms Get Along with Other Pets? 🐶 😽

Without proper socialization, these dogs can be aggressive toward other dogs, which makes it tough to manage them in public spaces. However, if they have an opportunity to meet and play with other dogs from early puppyhood, they should be able to get along with other dogs well enough to visit the dog park regularly.

They can also get along with cats if they are introduced to them at a young age. But their prey drive may kick in when smaller animals are around. To avoid a chasing scenario, they should always be leashed when outdoors and outside of a fenced yard.

Things to Know When Owning a Yorkie Pomeranian Mix

There is more to owning a Yorkie Pomeranian mix than playing with them and socializing them. There is diet, exercise, training, and health maintenance to think about too. Here is what you should know about caring for one of these cute little pooches.

Food & Diet Requirements 🦴

This hybrid dog can eat up to a cup of dry commercial food each day, depending on their specific energy levels. They can eat wet food, but dry food helps keep their teeth naturally clean and free of plaque buildup. Their food should include real chicken, beef, turkey, bison, or seafood and should not include anything artificial. Their small jaws and teeth do best with kibble pieces that are small and crunchy. If possible, a food designed specifically for small breeds should be chosen. This mixed breed tends to overeat, so food should be limited to mealtimes to avoid the development of obesity.

Yorkie Poms Exercise 🐕

Although little in size, the Yorkie-Pom has a large appetite for activity. They should enjoy a daily walk outside and have enough room inside to play and explore. They are always looking for something to do that will exercise their bodies and minds, so it’s a good idea to keep many toys around the house for them to interact with. Indoor activities like hide-and-seek will also challenge them mentally and physically. A fenced yard to run around in would be nice, but it isn’t necessary to keep these spunky dogs happy.

Yorkie Pom Training 🦮

The Yorkie Pomeranian mix should start training as soon as they go home with their new family members for the first time. Obedience training is important to keep these dogs from becoming destructive and aggressive. Their independence and stubbornness may result in them challenging family members for power.

Therefore, the entire family should participate in obedience training. Training should continue throughout life to ensure good behavior in all situations. Luckily, these pups are usually easy to train, and even children can manage commands like come, sit, and stay. Training can be done at home, but occasional community classes should be considered for the social aspect.

Yorkie Pom Grooming ✂️

With medium-length hair, the Yorkie Pomeranian is susceptible to matting, so they must be brushed daily to keep their fur soft and free of tangles. Quarterly visits to the dog groomer are recommended to keep their fur from getting too long and scraggly. Dental chews can be offered as snacks to keep their teeth and gums healthy. Their nails may need to be trimmed once a month or so to keep them from getting too sharp. They don’t typically need baths but should be sponge-cleaned where dirt buildup becomes apparent.

Health Conditions ❤️

For the most part, the Yorkie Pomeranian mix is a healthy dog that can live up to 16 years of age without incident. However, there are a few health conditions they are prone to that potential owners should be aware of.

Minor Conditions
  • Eye conditions
Serious Conditions
  • Tracheal collapse
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Patellar luxation

Male vs. Female

No male or female Yorkie-Pom is different when it comes to things such as coat color and looks. But owners may notice personality differences between the sexes, especially if their pups have not been spayed and neutered. Females seem to be harder to housetrain and more affectionate than males when they are experiencing their heat cycles.

Males may be more challenging and independent than females if they have not been neutered. Males also seem to run off more than females do. However, all the differences between the genders are minute and shouldn’t affect their ability to get along well with families of all kinds.
