  • The 6 Best Muzzles for Pitbulls

    1. CollarDirect Leather Pitbull Muzzle – Best Overall

    CollarDirect Leather

    Check Price on Chewy

There are many reasons you may put a muzzle on your Pitbull. For all of them, the CollarDirect leather muzzle is our favorite. Your dog will not be able to bite through this muzzle no matter what. It’s also very intimidating, making your dog look ferocious. For some, this may not be such a positive trait, but others may prefer the look.

Handmade out of genuine leather, this muzzle isn’t just tough looking. It’s durable and will certainly last a very long time. Our Pits seemed to get acclimated to it very quickly, becoming comfortable with putting it on and off. There are two adjustment straps to dial in the fit, but you still need to measure and make sure the sizing is correct for your Pit. With a great blend of aesthetics and performance, you can expect to shell out a bit extra on this muzzle. It’s not the most expensive one we tried, but it’s up there. That said, we think the quality is second to none, which is why it has earned its place at the top of our list.

    Pros
    • Handmade
    • Genuine leather
    • Comfortable for your dog with 2 adjustment straps
    • Looks intimidating
    Cons
    • Expensive
    • Sizing must be correct

    2. Baskerville Ultra Pitbull Muzzle – Best Value

    Baskerville 61520

For a comfortable muzzle that won’t prohibit your Pitbull from drinking and eating, the Baskerville Ultra Muzzle is our recommendation. We think it’s the best muzzle for Pitbull for the money, and it’s pretty easy to see why. Many people are turned off by the intimidating look of muzzles, but this one is much less of a threatening look. It’s also very affordable at about half the cost of the CollarDirect model we reviewed first.

To achieve a perfect fit, this muzzle can be shaped by heat to conform to the shape of your dog’s snout. We appreciated this feature since every dog has a different facial structure, even among the same breed. After heat-shaping ours, it was one of the most comfortable for our Pits out of all the muzzles we tried on them. That said, it did tend to rub a little on top of the snout, though it never became an issue. This was really the only flaw we could find with it. In the end, we think the Baskerville is the best value, which is why it’s in the second spot on our list.

    Pros
    • Affordably priced
    • Can still pant, eat, and drink with the muzzle on
    • Comfortable for your dog
    • Doesn’t look scary
    • Can be heat-shaped
    Cons
    • Can rub on top of snout

    3. BRONZEDOG Dog Muzzle – Premium Choice

    BRONZEDOG

If your primary concern is your Pitbull being able to bite, then a softer style muzzle isn’t going to curb the behavior you’re hoping to curtail. The BRONZEDOG muzzle is instead constructed of durable stainless steel and has no give. Your dog will not be able to bite through this muzzle no matter what they do. It’s extremely strong, though it’s still comfortable for your Pitbull. The nose bridge is nicely padded and there’s plenty of room for your Pit to pant and lick his nose. The open design won’t restrict breathing.

This muzzle is built specifically for Pitbulls, so it should fit just fine. That said, double-check by measuring your dog’s snout to ensure that it will fit properly. This is one of the more expensive muzzles we’ve used, but the great protection and comfort are worth the extra expense in our eyes, which is why it’s our premium choice pick.

    Pros
    • Padded for your Pit’s comfort
    • Stainless-steel construction is ultra-strong
    • Your dog can still lick its nose
    • Won’t restrict breathing
    Cons
    • Expensive
    • Must have right size snout to fit properly

    4. Barkless Pit Bull Dog Muzzle

    Barkless Dog Muzzle

We liked the concept of this dog muzzle from Barkless. It’s one of the lightest ones we’ve seen since it crafted from silicone. It’s soft and foldable but still very durable. It allows your dog to drink and pant so they remain comfortable while wearing it. That said, it didn’t do a good job of preventing biting. If that’s your primary goal, we’d recommend going with one of our top three picks instead which were much more effective for this purpose.

We had a hard time getting this muzzle on because of the buckle system. However, it was not at all hard for our Pits to wriggle out! If you want to leave your pet unattended with this muzzle on don’t expect it to stay on too long. If you’re purchasing a muzzle for looks, then the Barkless is a fine choice since it is very affordably priced. But if you want to stop your dog from biting, then you’ll need to find a muzzle that’s harder and less flexible.

    Pros
    • Allows drinking and panting
    • Soft but durable silicone basket
    Cons
    • Not effective at stopping biting
    • Very difficult to put on with buckle
    • Easy for a dog to take off

    5. Didog Leather Dog Muzzle for Pitbulls

    Didog WDMU-D1-M

There’s no doubt, the Didog leather dog muzzle will definitely stop your dog from being able to bite. Unfortunately, they also can’t keep their nose moist with it on, get water, or even pant comfortably. Worse, it’s not very breathable. The leather covers your Pit’s entire mouth. The nose is somewhat exposed and there are little air holes in the front but we didn’t feel like this was adequate.

The Didog muzzle is clearly very uncomfortable for your dog. None of our Pits wanted anything to do with this muzzle. It is genuine leather so it’s rather expensive. We suggest picking a higher quality muzzle that will let your dog be comfortable while protecting them and those around. Or alternatively, saving your money and getting the Baskerville Ultra muzzle, which performed just as well at a lower price.

    Pros
    • Can’t bite through
    Cons
    • Not as breathable as other models
    • Very uncomfortable for dogs
    • Can’t drink or lick nose with it on

    6. Niteangel Nylon Dog Muzzle

    Niteangel

Niteangel has created a unique muzzle that looks much less intimidating than traditional style muzzles. Instead of a cage around your dog’s snout, the Niteangel muzzle is just a loop that holds their mouth closed. It doesn’t affect their breathing and it’s got extra-soft padding for your Pit’s comfort.

Unfortunately, this muzzle didn’t perform as well as we had hoped. The dogs were still able to bite with it on, no matter how we adjusted it. Worse, the stitching is very weak and started coming undone the first week we tried it. Eventually, the whole side came off and the muzzle was no longer usable. Granted, it’s a very cheap muzzle, but we still want to see it last for a while. Even while it was working our dogs had no problem slipping it off after a few minutes. Altogether, we weren’t impressed with this muzzle and don’t recommend it for our readers.

    Pros
    • Doesn’t affect breathing
    Cons
    • A dog can still bite with this on
    • Weak stitching came undone
    • Dogs can slip it off

Buyer’s Guide – Picking the Best Muzzle for Pitbulls

Now that we’ve compared some of our picks for best Pit Bull muzzles, we think it’s pertinent to discuss what traits we’re comparing them on. While everyone has their reasons for wanting to use a muzzle with their Pitbull, all of these factors are worth keeping in mind when making your decision.

    Protection

For most Pitbull owners, protection is the number one reason to purchase a muzzle. A muzzle can protect your dog from itself if it’s getting into things it shouldn’t, biting itself on an injured area, or causing harm in any way. Of course, it’s not just for your dog’s protection. People are often scared of Pitbulls, so the muzzle can help other people be less afraid since they know your dog can’t hurt them. If your dog is a biter, a muzzle can make it impossible for them to strike, which protects the people and nearby dogs.

    Comfort

After protection, our main concern is the comfort of our canine companions. Some muzzles are uncomfortable and our dogs wanted nothing to do with them. There are several things to look for in a muzzle to ensure it will be comfy for your dog to wear around. For instance, it should have plenty of padding for the bridge of their snout where it rests. If not, then it could rub a raw spot over time. Next, make sure it’s fully adjustable so you can get a proper fit every time. You’ll also want to make sure they have plenty of breathability so they don’t get short on air. Our favorite muzzles also left room to pant and even lick their nose to keep it moist.

    Looks

In a way, muzzles have sort of become a fashion statement. In fact, many Pit owners have taken to social media to show off their dog in its intimidating muzzle. If you like that look, then a muzzle has obvious appeal. While most muzzles look daunting to some degree, certain ones really play into it. If you’re looking for a muzzle based off looks, we suggest leather muzzles since they tend to match that look the best.

    Can They Take it Off?

It’s no secret that some dogs are escape artists! Some muzzles are also easier to slip off than others. Put these two together and it’s a bad combination. If you know your dog likes to escape, the best muzzle for your Pit Bull will have multiple cinch points so you can be sure it’s difficult for your dog to take off. Many of the muzzles we tried seemed secure until we left the dog alone for five minutes! Some brands offered more adjustability than others, and we found that the more we could adjust the muzzle to our dogs’ size, the better it would stay on.

    Conclusion

Though all the muzzles we tested are built to serve a similar purpose, they do so to varying degrees of effectiveness. Our reviews have compared six that we thought were the best muzzles for Pit Bulls, but only three have earned our recommendations. Before you go purchase one, we’re going to quickly recap so everything is fresh in your mind. Between the intimidating look and excellent protection it offers, the CollarDirect leather muzzle was our favorite and has earned our top recommendation. Handmade from genuine leather, it’s comfortable for your dog and keeps them and everyone else safe.

We think the Baskerville Ultra Muzzle was the best value out of the bunch. It doesn’t prohibit eating, drinking, or panting, and it’s non-threatening. It can also be heat-shaped to achieve a perfect fit, yet it’s priced very affordably. Our premium choice pick from BRONZEDOG is constructed from stainless steel for the ultimate in protection. Your dog will not be able to bite through this no matter what. It also doesn’t restrict breathing, and it’s padded for your dog’s comfort. We’ve tried and approved of all three of these muzzles and feel confident in recommending them to you.

We hope that this article truly helps you find the best dog muzzle for your pitbull. Good luck!
